THE COUNCIL DISCUSSES EP 90 OF RIPTIDE.

Speedy Cheetah Cub

To be fair, the reason Chip was against killing was because of his trauma in the memory that was removed from his mind. He no longer remembers it, so he no longer has that aversion to killing.

TheGoodLuckAnomaly

JUST NOW SAW THIS. chip did not gain his aversion to ending a life by ending a life, he always had it! the reason the trauma of killing someone hit so hard, was because he never wanted to do it in the first place!

Gabe

I wish Griz knew how great he was at DMing. I gather that he seems kinda insecure about his capabilities of story telling and narration but I'm dead ass on my second listen of the campaign and eagerly awaiting episode #123. I've never played DnD (though I desperately want to) and I've only listened to this DnD campaign podcast, but I can't imagine another campaign, crew or DM coming anywhere near Riptide. You guys rock and Grizzly is an amazing Dungeon Master

Amy Waller

Not me ready to hear about grizzly's stories from the editing trenches

cait

w the cutting limbs thing i think it would be controlled damage on the limb for our table (even though it has YET to come up..)

honeyleis

for my table and cutting of limbs, i'll allow it like rule of cool for a finishing attack. also, if they specifically say 'i want to cut off this limb' they will roll disadvantage and i'll just kinda see how much damage they do versus how much health the enemy has and kind of eyeball it. nat 20s can have the options but its a little by ear when it comes to limbs getting cut off, it hasn't happened, but i do warn my players This Guy Might Try To Cut Your Arm Off in combat here and there too

Kai Strong

At my table we rule it as roll at disadvantage to hit, need to do 1/6 total HP to chop off arms, legs hands etc (can be stacked hit after hit). And as a Dm I will use this in important moments so it is impactful

honeyleis

its a situation by situation thing bc all my players are fucking insane

Just Roll With It

The episode should hopefully be public this evening. Apologies for the wait, the render has crashed multiple times and takes over 10 hours to finish. I forgot to tell Ikarus not to schedule the rolled. Hopefully everyone who caught the stream enjoys this. - G

Eggyneer

I have a question, DID JAY HAVE THE MIND READIND WRIST BAND ON DURING CHIP AND RUFUS'S CONVERSATION? THIS WAS NEVER ADDRESSED.

arne waelkens

Cant wait to watch this afther the real eps is uploaded 😅

App1e_Ju1ce

I have a character that takes the limbs (bones more like) of the people/monster she defeats as trophies and it usually is a finishing blow thing/have great consequences. if i wanted to roll to cut it and failed than it would put me in a dire situation (whatever that may be)

NotAnOrange

I thought this was a joke💀 where is ep 90😭

Vi

Yo what if jay and Kira had a sick aerial battle, that would be so cool

Atticcouch

I’m sad the boys didn’t talk about jays moment with scared Ollie. It felt like an important moment because jay had to step up and be confident and Ollie had to be brave but he asked for help. Probably my favorite part of the ep.

NotAnOrange

Omg wait YALL there was a live stream?

TheGoodLuckAnomaly

i think it would be perfect for chip to carry on after this with that very same 'i shouldnt have done that, i feel guilt, i regret killing', feeling, while at the same time having, in that moment, the 'if i dont kill them now then they WILL kill me.' mindset that influenced an impulse decision. the only other time he went against his best judgment to Kill/Spare something, was when he killed that goblin after it took down ollie. scenes like these also have me remembering when they argued over whether or not to kill the empress. GREAT STUFF yall im LOVIN the morality and mortality conflicts so far!!

Beejuice

as a DM id probably make it disadvantage since youre targeting specifically, and base the damage needed on what exactly theyre trying to do. Id also make it clear if they open this door i can use it too

Fishgogle Yark

Bizly failed to cut the hole in the bottle biggest disappointment ever.

addie

one of the best riptide episodes imo

Abigail

On the point of JRWI being a comedy podcast and some comedy moment during serious situations feeling weird, I feel like JRWI can be both: a funny D&D podcast AND one more more serious themes as well. I already think it does so very well! A fully serious podcast can be very dark and draining, so moments of levity are practically necessary. There’s certainly a balance to be found, but I think JRWI walks this tightrope very skillfully. Your DMing is great, Grizzly!!

Jam'ez

Holy shit. Just came back here to say these visuals are fire. The effort you guys put into this one shows for sure

Mistrex

The visuals were truly just incredible i loved the art for all of the characters

NotAnOrange

When Grizzly gave his cap fact i was gonna cry man😭😭😭 poor grizzly 🙏🙏 i hope you feel better I can’t imagine how bad that must be

Lee

OMG , Charlie said hell hunt chip if he kills him, but technically chip did kill CHARLIE SLIMECICLE IN THE FEY?!?!(this is a joke, but like hehehhoho)

RuthTheBananaDuck

Nooo Charlie not my glass bottle collection! (I actually have one please don’t put holes in them)

RuthTheBananaDuck

That’s part of why the episode was delayed iirc

Alex be-editin

I usually play limb removal by ear, if it's a finishing blow sure, it has to do with how they want to end the person, but if it happens in combat and they haven't already dealt enough damage to kill, I do disadvantage for targeting a limb and then it needs to deal a large chunk of their remaining health. I warn my players that they're setting a precedent though, now I can target their limbs as a DM. After issuing the warning I've never had a player decide to go ahead with cutting off a limb.

Grimy Boi

I’ve been binging dungeons and daddies between JRWI episodes and my fight or flight instinct activated when I heard this episodes intro

You-topia

Greattttt pointtttt

Em

I typically do two rulings for my campaigns with limb targeting, one) it’s at disadvantage unless there’s a specific reason why it wouldn’t be (ie you’re aiming for a hand that’s holding on to you) in which case that would give advantage in the situation, making it just a flat roll and two) I generally rule that if you can do it to your opponent they can do it back, eye for an eye so to speak but if my campaign is more light hearted or comedic/my pcs don’t want their looks to change that much then I may make an exception, especially for one shots. But a long term on like this I’d say eye for an eye is always an interesting dynamic.

Titan Storm

The fact that Gillion killed a guy with 471 washing machines worth of weight is hilarious 😂

em

we had a conversation among our table pre campaign about what people felt about loss of limbs. granted, we're playing in eberron with an artificer and a warforged, so limb loss is less of a big deal. but basically we had a conversation about when is it cool - it can happen in big boss fights, and we can target a specific body part in that same way. it really just comes down to how your players at the table feel about limb loss and how that might affect them, and what the in world solutions are to that (if there are any).

Amelia

I honestly think there can be some good development out of chip killing crow. It was mentioned that losing the memory of chip being forced to take his first life could be the reason for it and I think that’d be kinda cool for him to explore. I think he’s totally be conflicted about killing them because he knows he has a reason for not killing but he also knows he has a reason to hate price and crows loyalty could have played a part in him being driven to kill even if he can’t remember what the reason for both of those things are, if that makes sense. If Jay brings it up I think it’d be a good opportunity to explore how losing the memory is changing/has changed chip. Or once he regains the memory, have price exploit it to make chip feel like he’s losing the part of himself that stood against price in the first place. Idk, I’m just spitballing because I totally get regretting decisions that change the character development you’ve planned and been working towards. I think it was cool tho!

Faifik

Item you get foreshadows you losing a limb. Right, Hopik?

Keyia

I can't believe Chip's hypothetical cult is just taxes

Keyia

I would personally rule targeting a limb as a more difficult target by increasing the AC of the specific limb and/or imposing disadvantage. For removing a limb, I would consider a damage threshold necessary, almost as if the limb had its own hit point total despite the damage still applying to the enemy as a whole. (By this I mean to imply that further effort toward amputation would eventually add up.) Attempting such a feat could also be ruled to have a drawback regarding actual damage output. For instance, if a character actively targets only the enemy's ear, a portion of the damage might apply to the severed appendage as opposed to the enemy, especially if the damage is more than sufficient to separate the two. Not all would be negated, but it might be lessened since the target of the attack is no longer a part of the enemy, in the same way attacking a severed limb would not harm the person it was once attached to. I wouldn't have a clue what to do if someone wanted to cut an enemy's hair off.

elisium!!!

i failed physics can someone calculate the newtons of net force the anchor had on impact

Talon

At my table, once it's introduced, we can then incorporate it with NPC's and enemies. For example, when one of our players learned to cast fly, we then had flying enemies. With limbs cutting off (which did happen once), the player had a hand in their inventory. Ew. (This now has introduced our limbs being cut off- uh oh. Otherwise, we run with this rule: If you create a character with a natural disadvantage (i.e. a permanent limp due to a bad knee, -5 to movement pool), you will be given one additional boon at the DM's discretion (i.e. +1 additional skill proficiency). This also goes for losing limbs, etc. in game :}

oz overzealous

GRACE IS SO REAL FOR MAKING CHARLIE WATCH ELLA ENCHANTED ITS MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME !!!!!!!!! -oz

em_aye_vee_

Please don't put holes in the bottoms of all my glass bottles I have so many

Justiciar of Gluten

I’m brand new to DMing and my party is brand new to playing. In the first real boss fight my brother’s character took so much damage, due to losing control of his blood bending powers that were granted to him by the Blood Maykr that he lost an arm. So yeah I’ve told my players anything is on the table, I am not afraid to kill their characters, mutilate them or kill lovable NPCs. But I didn’t know the system shock table was a thing so I will be using it from now on.

Owltrocious

this episode is so good!!!!!!!!!!!

Noelle Wilson

I'm so hyped for the next bounty update with the crew not only escaping from a well planed military ambush but also in that ambush killed a vice admiral the bounty will be insane!!

Psycchan

i really like dismembering in my dnd, but ive kinda got a couple stipulations to it. like youve gotta have sort of an honor system for everyone not to always attack limbs bc while yeah, it is "optimal", its not a thing anyone would actually do in combat 99% of the time. its just an extension of not metagaming really. the other thing is to have ways to restore whatevers cut off, be it healing magic, prosthetics like chips pinky, or smth else
