THE COUNCIL DISCUSS SEASON 2 EPISODE 26 OF PRIME DEFENDERS

Comments

arlus_best

I vibe with the whole audio only thing, but I also am a person that doesn't need visual aid when watching JRWI. The captions however would be a good thing to add though. Captions are always good.

Magz yup

My personal take on the audio only stuff, I strongly strongly prefer facecams. Although the bitb and riptide visual stuff y'all did was very very cool, I just struggled so much to focus. When it comes to bitb specifically, I was able to focus a bit better because of the music but sometimes it also distracted me because I freaked out because I'm a nerd and like music in a nerd way but that's just me probably. I'm so good at run on sentences. Anyways, as y'all said, if campaigns do become audio only, captions most definitely would be necessary for me and many others. And also as you guys said, the reactions are one of my favorite things! Idk, something about the facecams just makes it feel more fun and more genuine in a way? I'm not great at wording my thoughts in a way that properly conveys the feeling and tone. But, and this may sound too parasocial or pretentious or something, I kinda like how with the facecams it really does just feel like some guys playing ttrpgs. One of my favorite things about jrwi is that it's not super serious and edited in ways that feels super professional or something. Idk if that makes sense. Of course striving for higher quality is great, that's cool, I think I just get concerned about loss of silliness I guess. Idk, those are just my personal thoughts. Idk how much sense they make, but they're thoughts lol. Thank you for listening to fan feedback on this stuff

Magz yup

Oh also something I forgor, unlike Charlie, me personally I actually feel More immersed when I see people's reactions and expressions. I'm not the greatest at imagining stuff especially when it comes to filling in the blanks in situations, so getting that extra. stimuli(?) I guess? and information really helps me picture it more

Goonglab

Audio only would be fire, I always watch the show lying on my couch with my eyes closed and it'd be cool to know I'm not missing anything. I love it when I get to come up with how people are moving or reacting in my head. Love doing it with books and things too.

Jesamoko

Speaking for myself, your reactions and facecams brings me in to the scene, and makes me feel like i am watching just a normal dnd table playing instead of a production, though i agree for certain tones like bitb audio only is good, but i dont feel like most sessions in either campaing needs that in most sessions. Though it is your desicion, subtitels and some indication on who is speaking would be good

Goonglab

Also it would be cool to have more time to get funky with the edits. I want so much lying, god that shit is great.

Citruz

My adhd needs the visuals, even though I love bitb it’s probably my favorite campaign. Audio is really cool and can really put you into the scene, however sometimes it’s hard to focus on and you need other components. Reactions & face cams kinda help with seeing the moments and add to the experience. For bitb it really worked as audio since the vibe and everything about its horror translated better when you couldn’t see faces or anything, almost isolating(?), but pd is a lot more silly and less serious more than it is serious. I’m not saying pd wouldn’t work with no visuals besides the moving pictures that stay up for like 10 minutes or so, i don’t think it’ll work for the silliness of the series. But, I’d try it for one episode or so, and get opinions from fans on here or twitter, cause im sure most people will stick around no matter which on it is.

vyn

I honestly perfer having the facecam, i love the idea of visuals or pictures, but its kinda hard to me to follow along without them sometimes.

Impossumable

Go Vtuber with character avatars.

Neo

I’m sorry i need visuals as someone with aphantasia :((

Kai Strong

Personally I listen to JRWI in the background when I do other stuff so don’t really need visuals for that but when I sit down to Watch it, wether that’s the live broadcasts of Riptide or watching back epic scenes I need the visuals to stay focused and love the reactions and bits

Roswell

My favorite part of pd is watching Biz move his hands and just physically act out what is happening, so I'd def miss that. Same with the reactions. One part about BitB that I thought a lot was wishing how I could see the look on ya'll's faces for some bits

X

I would really miss all the visual bits. The show and how you guys interact with each other is really funny and entertaining, and having face cams adds to that. I've always felt like I was missing out on something whenever I go audio only.

juniperjblank

As someone who’s been playing dnd over call for forever now, I personally mourn the ability to see other people’s reactions when we play. I understand the draw to audio but I think it’s more immersive to see other’s faces and that is my take

EnochTheJoke

I think back to the visual bits of like the dimension hopping episode

Fox Heart 666

I really like having facecams bc i personally have trouble focusing on different voices. Looking at facial expressions and hand gestures helps me as well, but if you guys provide captions or transcripts to help follow along, i think that would help people like me a lot

The tincan man

I think the whole audio only idea for PD is really cool however I really enjoy seeing the face cams as it helps me better focus on the episode, and seeing everyone's reaction really helps immerse me in the show but at the same time I think the visual stuff is a cool idea but I personally would prefer the face cams

BonEpic

I'm able to handle the audio only's fine, but i really like seeing reactions and such. The audio only episodes *do* kick ass but i feel like they work better as once-in-a-while thing, and not a every episode thing. That's just my thoughts tho

Bee ツ

I usually only listen to the audio only already, but I think the idea of the comic book pictures is really cool!

Kolby

That idea sounds fucking epic honestly

St4tic

I would really love audio only! BITB and the audio only Riptide episode were my easily the most immersed I’ve been listening to you guys.

Bacchu!

Honestly? I really like the cams. I think if you guys want you can add stuff around it or make it smaller to fit other things. I get that you guys wanted to make it more professional, but the reason why I love this DnD podcast above all others is BECAUSE of the stupid jokes at the absolute worst moments and the goofy faces

reed_you_guess

Audio only i got so many mixed opinions lmao, I think it worked so well for things like BITB and the riptide ep r.e immersion. Idk if it was bc they where both shorter so it was a sick change of pace, or bc of the type of story BitB was it lended itself towards audio only better. Like most people, for me face cams help with retention and like seeing everyone’s reactions makes the characters reactions more real for me personally! & a big part of the show for me is everyone’s physical performances aswell as voices. Like Rumi’s speech in ep 13 of apothy wouldnt have been as impactful without grizz’s physical performance, and the same with gillions edyn reaction and all of ep 53. If audio only makes ya feel like you can improve the podcast and you guys are more comfortable and confident in your performances, then shoot. But I agree w condi that definitely transcripts and visual references are still needed!!

Eltzu

I would miss video so bad, it's one of the main reasons I love Just Roll With It. I love the visual bits and reactions and seeing the faces make the characters very real to me. I loved BITB, but like many have said, I like audio only as sometimes thing, because the video helps me focus. So yeah, I don't mind some episodes being audio only, but I really love the video format.

Nina

agreed fully

Nina

man i wish i could say something else, but man i feel like so much would be missing without face cams :( i really want to support y’all in how you guys feel more comfortable doing the show of course. i can’t really imagine scenes in my head, i’m very jealous of people who can do that, so for me it wouldn’t be like an exchange of ‘fun reactions and visual bits’ vs ‘immersion’, it would just be the lack of the former. and actually, it would kill the immersion a bit for me, since i can kinda see the character’s expressions by the visual performance. that’s my experience since you asked how we feel about it, but i hope you guys at least try it out, see how you feel about it and do what you guys are more happy with.

Gunthergoon

Yes please transcriptions for the video, I have an audio processing disorder and it helps so so much

Courtney

Personally I REALLY appreciate the visuals. I have ADHD and the visuals help me out with focusing. Don’t get me wrong, I loved BITB, and the just rolled’s, but I zone out and have to rewind so much for audio only content because I lose focus so easily. With the visuals, that still happens but considerably less. And even issues with focusing aside, I really like seeing you guys react to what’s happening. It adds a certain charm to the show that I don’t think you can get with audio only.

CommanderZ-76

Dakota and Ms. G remind me of Asta and Sister Lily. Also I’m in full support of the comic book audio only

Salomé Guilloteau

subtitles would deffo be great, or maybe transcripts. i genuinely don't know if u prefer with facecams or more in the bitb style, both are great in different ways.

Reebee

Same here and I 100% agree, I’d miss seeing their reactions and visual bits too.

Reebee

I really love seeing your guys’ visual bits and reactions, and it definitely helps me focus on the episodes because they’re longer. But BiTB was fantastic, I think audio only works really well for shorter campaigns, but for longer campaigns having the face cams makes it feel more personal. It’s really cool to actually see the people who are putting so much effort and creativity into these characters, it feels more real, and it makes me feel like I could do that too. Your podcasts finally made me start diving deeper into learning about dnd. I’m possibly going to be part of a campaign/dnd group soon, and I’ve created a character I’m very attached too and excited about.

Gekerd blep

I love seeing the visual bits and reactions it's just so amazing to see if someone rolls very low on something or very high on something in a critical moment seeing how you guys react and like jump out of your chairs and scream is honestly amazing and the visuals help me focus because I loved blood in the bayou so much the audio was fantastic it was very immersive and I'm just someone who really loves horror but there were times where it was hard to stay focused even when watching the video of the first episode that had like the visuals it didn't speak to me as much as seeing your guys's face and reactions I'm totally down for whatever you guys want to do but I will say as much as I loved blood in the bayou it is really hard for me to do audio only stuff more specifically if it pertains to a longer campaign I think if audio only is something that you really want to do for shorter campaigns I'm more okay with that but I will always prefer the visuals and your guyses visual bits and reactions over audio only any day Also I am one of the people that feels more immersed when I do get to see you guys and have the FaceCam there there are moments where I zone out and can just picture the characters but I am more immersed when I see the FaceCam and can get really into it even if in a serious moment is happening and you guys are being silly it doesn't change the mood for me but that's me personally If audio only is something that is going to be done finding ways to help people who have a hard time focusing on audio only campaigns could be very helpful like captions or other things like that The audio only stuff that is already there like BITB and that riptide ep were really good and the idea for the comic stuff for the audio only videos sounds amazing but for me personally I love the facecams and seeing you guys and everything so much more Also on a different note I personally love that you have both the audio only for the people who really enjoy that but I also really love that you also have the video FaceCam versions so you have something for the people who like audio only but also for the people who really love or just need the video FaceCam version

Ragna

I'm with Charlie on this one, personally prefer to listen only but I also know video has its place for others(also the audio was more even in this one, thanks!)

Natsu Sekai

I prefer video content over pure audio, and probably for the most out-there reason. When it's video, my computer screen is moving, but when it's just audio, it's not moving at all, and I get screen burn-in if I leave it on the pure-white patreon JRWI page for too long.

Natsu Sekai

And I just like seeing people's laughing faces. When Biz is 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 🤏 close to bursting, & his face squints from holding back a hearty belly-laugh, it's so much more personable. Which admittedly is very parasocial but w/e. I feel more compelled to laugh when I see laughing faces.

Hastur, All Clad in Yellow

I wouldn’t mind I’m honestly mostly an audio listener. Do what y’all would enjoy most.

Gunkymunkyspunk

I can’t speak for anyone else but I wouldn’t mind either video or audio only. I feel like I have been blessed with an incredibly vivid imagination that allows me to fabricate any sensation, be it sight, sound, smell, or touch. However I see other people who go so far as to say that this decision will make or break their enjoyment. Either way I trust that whatever decision you guys make will be well-founded and conducive to the kind of story you want to tell. I only hope that everyone can look beyond any potential inconvenience and appreciate the show for all the love and care put into it. Keep up the good work! Either way, you’ll still be my number one podcast.

ob1fun

I like the way that the show is ran right now and Like the fact that we have video and audio methods so that everyone can experience the show whatever way they want. However, if the show was done the way that bizly described it that would be pretty epic! I’d love to see the show done and edited like a comic book, my only worry is how long it could take for the episodes to come out

Spencer Martin

I prefer video as it can add to how things are done ( the otherworldly summoning what if was really bland without having the visual stimulation) but I think audio only would be good for more of the short campaigns like Blood in the bayou since there’s more information and stuff to be packed in the 4 episodes.

stomp

I listen with audio about 75% of the time when I’m walking or doing something else and video about the other 25%, but I’d still really miss having that option to see your guys’ reactions and visual bits. I agree with Charlie that I find it easier to vividly imagine what’s going on when I can only hear it, but it’s still very engaging in a different way to see how you guys react to the scenarios. From what I’ve seen of these comments it seems like the people who are already audio only would be fine with it while people who only watch the videos would lose a bit of their immersion and focus. Right now we kinda have it both ways, we can choose whether we want to listen audio and visualize everything in our heads, or watch the video and see all the funny bits and reactions. Obviously this is all ultimately up to you guys and whatever you decide though. I like the idea of having more art and visual references like those BitB and riptide episodes, but I think it would be the best of both worlds if there were some way incorporate it alongside the facecams, kinda like how you guys impose new character art over the facecams for a few seconds when they’re introduced. A character could slide into frame for a moment with the others when they enter a scene like in the riptide episode, but then fade back to cams after a couple seconds kind of like an establishing shot. I think that would be neat, but I understand if that kind of thing would mean a lot of work

RockNLoad

I'm a sucker for the increased audio quality from going audio only.

SuperKing

I wouldn't mind either or. If you went back to audio only it would kinda be nostalgic for classic jrwi

scrimmyjim

bizly's idea fucking rocks!! even just one dynamic drawing would be awesome. i usually just keep the podcast on in the background while i play video games so audio only is totally fine by me, especially if it comes with more immersive audio design. i would like for silly episodes to have facecams on though, specifically if we get another otherworldly summoning type of episode. the visual experience of that was unparalleled.

mocco

the rolled recently have been so good, i love these sm! as far as audio only goes, i for one think it has a lot of potential, especially with embracing the comic book style of the show. i 100% agree with condi about doing transcriptions, i think that would be a really amazing addition either way. one of things i usually love about ttrpgs is “informality” of it and looseness of the “4th wall” in the stories, which i think is ever so prevalent in the video format, but i really think i find enough of that in these rolleds (which i adore so much). i think the show could easily benefit from an audio only format where the immersion and storytelling can be played with a lot more, and as long as i still get these rolleds filled with reactions and silly tangents, i don’t think i’d be missing anything at all. of course i know that my feelings don’t speak for everyone (i personally don’t have a very hard time focusing on audio only content), but i also trust that the team would be able to make it work and blow us all away. in any event, im very excited to see what the future of the show holds :]

mocco

i do find myself switching from audio to video during funny moments or big reactions, so i do really appreciate the option still

Dandy

Personally as a viewer, I honestly prefer video. Not to say I don't like audio-only episodes, because they do have a different feel to them, but I just like to be able to look over and see what the guys are doing from time to time. the occasional visual gag will come into play like the chip statue thing or the funny intros they do at the beginning. Those things wouldn't be there without video. Being able to see faces adds to the ttrpg aspect of it too, because while immersion is important, the fact that it is a game, is also part of the charm. I think super serious stuff like the Blood in the Bayou camp was probably better as audio-only because full immersion enhanced the experience, but for main, long-running campaigns, I would just feel like something is missing. I do see the benefit of audio only, but this is just my personal opinion on the matter.

Some Acolyte

Having audio only worked for Blood in the Bayou, but even then I think I would have preferred video. Having watched y’all for a few years now I have lost count of how many times I’ve rewinded an episode to catch your reactions. Having the video isn’t just supplementary to the audio, it’s a core part of the content and at least for me it would reduce my engagement with it a fair bit.

Meg Theories

I think personally I prefer video, I think my ADHD plays a major part in it as well but I find it hard to focus on something unless I have a visual representation in front of me otherwise I'm having to go back a rewatch certain moments. I think for BITB, audio only worked but I think my engagement would decrease a lot, however I really enjoy seeing all of your reactions in real time, it personally makes my immersion better

The Uncomfortable Mug™

I listen to this podcast while at work or playing a video game, so I much prefer the Audio, as I rarely look at the screen to see reactions

Mike Rawch

I usually listen to audio and multitask, like lots of others have said. For the funny bits and reactions, if there's a particularly funny bit, the visual could always switch to the facecams for a sec or put a few at the end like a blooper reel or something idk. But Audio only is honestly how I enjoy episodes anyway.

honeyleis

i'm late to the discussion, but i think i could get behind full audio if there were some sort of visual thing and CAPTIONS !! i am extremely in the head imaginative similar to how charlie described, but i also an audio processing disorder and often rely on captions or lip-reading to help me keep track of what i'm listening to. i still feel like i prefer the video just simply because i enjoy the visual gags and moments, and seeing the faces during serious moments and imagining the characters with a similar expression, but would be okay with audio only if that decision was made.

honeyleis

*have an audio processing disorder

Keyia

If the audio-only format ever happens again, then the video could possibly use multiple sprites with different emotions for PCs? The same sprites could even be used again, should the opportunity arise.

AislinnMollisong

I almost always listen to the episodes while I'm working now, so I don't get to see the video parts much anymore, but I love being able to watch them when I can. I am able to pay attention so much better when I can watch you guys acting and moving around while you talk, not to mention the visual bits and random nonsense. I think maybe doing a sort of png-tuber type situation for audio-only episodes could be cool, basically having different expressions/versions of character art that could help give more reaction and visual representation of whats happening without facecams

JayBrick75

I was pretty interested in the images on screen like a comic book idea, but I was completely sold when Charlie said “Fortnite loading screen” because I pictured it in my head and that would be so incredibly awesome

Zhimi

Gosh! I finally got around to this ep and it didn't disappoint. You all talked about how you imagined the new area in your heads, and for me I almost imagined one of those Christmas trainsets? Especially with the ice skaters in those set paths. It felt icily mechanical in a way? I really really enjoyed it!!

Crowbek

Personally I'd love audio-only episodes- I have ADHD and most of the time I get bored if I'm doing nothing but watching, so I usually end up doing something else and maybe rewinding a few seconds to see visual bits when I miss them, which to be honest can get a bit annoying to know I'm missing out when just listening. I also just get really into imagining everything in my head to the point where watching the video reactions is actually kinda distracting and takes me out of the immersion lol, I find it much easier to focus on audio than visual. So I do think an audio-only format could be really beneficial for the immersion and storytelling aspects, but doing things like subtitles and something like icons to indicate who is talking (maybe with some different expressions!) would be really cool compromises for the people who'd prefer video/find it easier to focus with video. In the end it's impossible to please absolutely everybody, and you could always switch between audio/video for what works best for different episodes. Whatever option works best for you guys, I'm sure will be able to work out well either way!

mega halo

I will say my favorite experiences when watching the podcast is watching a very funny or dramatic section and seeing all your faces, because when you guys act the characters, especially grizzly and bizly, y’all act physically as well. And the movements and facial expressions and the occasionally tears really makes a scene. I think I would miss that if it was gone. But the idea of having a lot more art and the comic book style sounds so fucjing sick, and j wonder if now that it’s one episode a week if both will be possible, because the idea of the art and more audio experiences sounds so fucking sick. Sex

Vampievity

Note: I accidentally wrote an essay. My b ;] Personally, I strongly prefer having video and seeing your guys' reactions! It helps me pay attention, be immersed & allows me to see the funny silly visual bits you guys do! It especially lets me see character reactions and their expressions. Of course, if you had certain episodes you'd prefer to be audio-only (important/serious story segments/etc.), having it in some comic book style would be very interesting. It's ultimately up to you guys :] Just saying that removing facecams entirely for me would make me feel less immersed in the story. (I agree with mega halo’s comment.) However, I do agree with Charlie that no facecams for BITB felt appropriate (even if I couldn't see your guys' reactions to the monsters) solely because the tone was incredibly serious, even if there were occasional bits. When there's scenes that rely a ton on the atmosphere and pure imagination, then maybe facecams would take away from that, but Prime Defenders isn't BITB; Prime Defenders has serious moments and might have dark themes but it's still focusing on some funny superhero guys. (I agree with what "Magz yup" commented abt this!) I’m not entirely sure how to put this feeling into words, so here’s my best shot (Also tons of other comments put this into words better, but here's my two cents (more like multiple dollars)): The entire PD story (to an extent) is dependent on the actions of the characters and how they react, which I believe, is the importance of the facecams to me. The viewer focuses a lot more on the conversations and character interactions, which expressions play into a lot (on top of the visual bit stuff I mentioned earlier). There are moral conflicts, debates between characters, etc. where I am very invested. Plus, some characters speak with their hands. Like in the recent episode, when Vyn throws his hands up while arguing with the others about trust. In BITB, less focus was placed on the characters, and built up an intense environment. Personally, I paid less attention to character interactions and conversations because I was wrapped up in this mystery about all the fleshy bug guys and if the characters could solve it. On top of that, there was less talking and more doing. Facecams might not add too much if all the characters are in a chase and just doing stuff without talking. It makes sense, why have facecams to tell expressions if the characters don’t have time to express. The emotional discussions and reactions to shocking monsters/events in BITB are the only times I felt like I was missing anything. The mood was often tense, and narration strongly focused on painting a picture. It’s like how talking with someone feels different whether their camera is on or off. Sometimes you vibe with not seeing the other person’s face, but sometimes not seeing the other person feels like you miss actually seeing them laugh or speak. Like, it’d be weird to have a serious conversation with someone if you can’t see their face. I hope this doesn’t sound entirely insane. My brain has been infested by sewer ravioli and the rats gnaw ceaselessly at my spaghettified form. Perhaps I have already lost coherent thought. And like I said, it’s ultimately the boys’ decision.

World's Greatest Bard

i'd really prefer to keep up with having the video, you guys are really great with visual humor

Keybox

I like having the video as I often zone out when I just listen to things so the videos help me a lot, but if it's done like the other once it might be okay. I prefer with webcam

Honeywisk

I prefer audio only. I enjoy making the world in my head and visualizing the characters myself.

Celeste The King

I'd really prefer video! While I also often get deep in the mental visual of it, I need to have faces or something constantly moving to keep me paying attention. It's so, so difficult without it.

Percy

i would looovvee audio only

lauren

Personally, I really love the video! I feel like seeing the visual bits is something charming that JRWI has over other actual play shows and I enjoy seeing your reactions (I feel like it really immerses me in the characters to see the body language and such). At the same time, I think it depends on the tone of the campaign; I think audio-only is VERY compelling for something more serious/spooky like BITB where audio and "theatre of the mind" is necessary to be fully immersed, but I think I would miss video in settings like PD or Riptide. At the end of the day, you guys will of course do what you are most comfortable with (and I think all the ideas about art and such sound awesome) but having video & audio options as we do now would be my vote.

Mixtraa

In terms of video, I don’t care either way. I listen to this podcast while working. I relistened to all of riptide and all of the rolled’s in like 3-4 weeks or something. I don’t watch nothing, just the way you guys interact is enough ti keep me entertained, as long as your mental health and how you guys interact is a main focus, I don’t mind:)

Michael

My vote is for audio only, the ideas for it sound sick. I do think any in-person stuff should be video though because it’s funny

Montavious

I personally love the video, it keeps me engaged, I love seeing all of the reactions, the visual bits and everything. I honestly kinda just skipped my way through BITB because I couldn’t focus on it, don’t get me wrong the art was super cool but I can only look at it and dissect it for so long (I did love BITB!). But if audio only is better for you guys then I’ll definitely keep listening, it’ll probably just take me awhile to listen to everything.

Ethananous512

I watch at work, so I am audio only anyway

Audrey

I'm super super late to this, but audio only is really hard for me to stay focused, even if I'm interested in the story. I've only listened to the first hour of the first episode of BitB, even though its such a cool campaign, solely because it's audio only. For video, being able to see reactions and facial expression and visual bits really help me understand the story wayyy way more.

liquidbronz

I like video so I have something im supposed to stare at even if I'm not watching every reaction and face. I'm glad Suckening has transcripts bc that helps a ton! Or even if it was a still screen like BITB with captions

Schayla K

I'm very late, but as someone just catching up on the content that I've missed now, I will say the most important thing to me that should be integrated is captions! They help a lot with people with audio processing issues and honestly help me focus a lot better. (I actually do transcription as a job, I'd be happy to help transcribe old stuff if necessary!)

ConstantlyBen

9:00 Another of the many Troy inspirations. Watching apoptosis... Wrong spelling but a more accurate word for that series. Prime defenders and the suckening. There are so many inspirations for Troy. His whole character is deep seated in reoccurring bits.

ConstantlyBen

I agree with Charlie that when listening to them. I don't see their faces. But the little nuances that a face provides when talking. Especially for someone autistic or with ADHD. AuDHD. It is integral. I can't really watch the episodes without visuals of some form. Even the suckenings png glows helped a ton. For this Bizly is a quiet guy. I had to rewatch 'The Master's fight after work because most of his reactions were just quiet. But his face? That spoke volumes. The surprise and grump. I agree that I don't see the people on screen. But I most certainly see more of the characters with visuals than without. I know this rolled is years old. I'm mainly typing this for myself for reference in future. Have a wonderful day.
