Once again we dip into the well of Bond films, in this case the multiple ones with villains who have undersea lairs. Then we throw in a bit of my favorite James Cameron film, ‘The Abyss’. For the benefit of non-Americans and those under 60, Earl Butz was a Midwest Republican who was Secretary of Agriculture during the Nixon and Ford administrations. Publicly he was responsible for ending many Depression-era programs that helped family farms in favor of subsidizing corporate agribusinesses who have now dominated US food production since the 1980s. Privately, it later transpired, he was famous for telling profane and racist jokes. He survived a scandal when an insulting joke about Pope Paul VI became public and he issued a mealy-mouthed apology. He was eventually forced to resign by President Ford after it was leaked by a disapproving aide that on a flight to California after the 1976 Republican National Convention with conservative entertainers Pat Boone and Sonny Bono (Cher’s ex-husband), Boone had asked Butz why the “Party of Lincoln” had trouble attracting Black voters, and Butz had responded that Black Americans only cared about three things: “tight pussy, loose shoes, and a warm place to shit.”
