Update: The survey for feedback has now closed.

... or the RCM for Really Cool Monsters (which is what Willy told me it stands for).

Hey folks! James here to let you in on a little Patreon preview. We have the release candidate for Draw Steel: Monsters attached to the bottom of this post. This puppy is packing over 400 stat blocks of monstery and dynamic terrain object goodness.

Much like the hero book release candidate, what you're looking at is still a work in progress. Because the book is still under construction, you'll notice that it has some print lines on the corners and sides of each page and some color gradients at the top of each page. Those won't be in the final version!

Reporting Issues

If you find a typo, formatting error, or some other issue with the book that you want to report, please use the survey here to do so:

https://forms.gle/xMBxa7t3MwLqjQSS8

You can fill out the survey multiple times if you want to send us multiple issues.

The big thing we want to know about is typos. Where are there spelling errors and such in the text. There's lots of lay out and art tweaking to be done, but we know that!

We're not relying on you folks to tell us every issue. We've got a team of proofreaders who are still going over this thing as we speak. You don't have to report errors if you don't want to! Some of you will want to, so we set up a way to report errors that best serves our workflow.

The feedback period for this RC is going to be very short. We're trying to turn around this book in a few days!

Known Issues

There are some generally known issues with this PDF that we're going to share with you now. These don't need to be reported!

Accessibility: This PDF still needs to undergo a thorough accessibility pass.

Inconsistent Spacing: Right now the spacing between sections, within abilities, and above various headings is inconsistent. Many characteristic score entries, traits, and abilities still need to be adjusted. Those mistakes look pretty bad right now, but we're aware and working on them.

Missing Art: There are a very few spots in the book where art needs to be placed or changed.

No Bookmarks: The PDF currently has no bookmarks.

No Cover: The cover is still coming.

No Resources Page: Including a link to a sortable table of stat blocks.

No Working Links: The cross reference and outside links in the PDF currently don't work.

Wyverns and Xorranox Messed Up: They need some big fixes.

Incorrect Icons: Some of the icons matched to abilities are incorrect. We are in the process of fixing them!

Some Stat Blocks Too Long: Some stat blocks are a little too big for the page. We're gonna shrink 'em!

Discord and Reddit

If you want to find a group to playtest or want to chat about the release candidate, head on over to the MCDM Discord. Be sure to link your Patreon and Discord accounts so you can also chat about the adventure with our other Patrons.

You can also head on over to the Draw Steel subreddit to discuss the game!

Thank you all so much for supporting MCDM and Draw Steel! We are VERY CLOSE to the release now.

Amazing work! I fell in love with Dwarf peace - crazy cool

Karmagator

Damn, the art in this is soooo awesome! The hobgoblins going full Mordor is just *chef's kiss* And the bugbear on p. 52 XD

Karmagator

Btw, whoever thought of using edited Codex screenshots as the basis for examples is a gentleman and a scholar!

holidayPictures4You

Wow, so nice!!! Seeing the art and abilities of the elves, I feel like I have to add at least one encounter with them.

Michael Kling

Utterly delightful! The faction pieces stand out especially- that oil painted style is so lush and so classic fantasy. I was also melting over the demon art. Such maddening, over-the-top designs that are right at home on the sickest death metal album covers- the kind with inscrutable lettering, lol. My game is on hiatus rn but MAN seeing this really makes me wanna get back behind the screen, so mission accomplished! Kudos again to all the amazing artists that worked on this.

Daniel Dias

I love the revolution rats on the roof!

Alex Nelli

I love the icons, they'll make running monsters so much quicker & smoother

Cody Rapai

I hope the header styles in this aren't representative of the final product or the changes they were making for the heroes book because they are still way to similar to each other. I'm looking at the encounter objective section and I can't really tell when a header is a type of objective or a sub-header describing the specifics of the objective. I don't know why they don't have some kind of indicator with the main headers like a line or symbol.

Cody Rapai

MANeuver is a man icon. Perfection!

FreakyKiki

What’s the point of the colored squares at the top of each page? Are they just for decoration or do they have a functional purpose?

DarkElysium

a little disappointed that it doesn't look like we're getting censor or troubadour rivals, but i'm hopeful we can get them in a future release!

DarkElysium

they're for printing test reasons i think; they won't be there for the final release

Benjamin Driesen

Looks great! Ajax is perfect (I would love to see a stat block for the Iron Saint at some point)! Also, not intending this in any negative way, but the Orc Rampart art on p.220 kinda looks like James in orc-form.

Cyrus Mach

I just read the part on Kobolds a I wanna say you got them exactly right I cannot wait to run a dungeon full of the little guys

Derek Berdine

Exactly. These are scanned as the prints come off the printer to make sure all the inks are still printing correctly. If one of them is off-normal, the press pauses and lets the tech make adjustments so they don't waste a bunch of paper, ink, and time. The final PDFs will be cropped down to remove the borders and print marks.

I thought the wode elves were going to be my favorite art design among the factions... then I saw the shadow elves full page spread. Amazing

Wilzard

....and then I saw the rivals art. So excited to get my physical book :D

Morgan Freeman-Sheehy

I was looking through the book last night and decided, on the spot, that my next major adventure would center the Shadow elves. They're that good.

Wilzard

The lore for the shadow elves is dope as hell. While I don't normally enjoy too much moral ambiguity from my antagonists in ttrpgs, the dying world angle is rich territory for building an interesting campaign... I expect that shadow elves will be the main plot once my players reach that echelon :D

Agile Monk

Me love you all long time ❤️😊. Great work.
