Hey folks! James and I are getting properly stuck in to the new RPG dev, there’s still Flee Mortals, and Where Evil Lives (aka the Lairs book) work to do, but RPG time is steadily increasing. We’re about to have a meeting the subject of which is “what is the difference between the Talent and the Mage?” After which, if we have a good answer, I’ll work some more on the Mage class prototype.

And there’s still one more issue of ARCADIA! Coming this month!

But, as we talked about before, that will be the last issue of ARCADIA and I want to talk about what’s next after that. Or rather, what’s not next.

First of all, I assume that at some point in the future, something like ARCADIA will return. What form it will take, I have no idea, but if our new game does well (i.e. it finds an audience, and that audience grows over time rather than shrinks!) then we hope lots of people will have ideas for articles. All the same kind of stuff you saw in ARCADIA, just for our game.

I originally thought we’d be able to keep making ARCADIA content after ARCADIA, still 5E, just one article a month instead of three. I thought that, with only one article a month, we’d be able to keep our 5E patrons happy while working on the RPG. That was going to be Tales From Arcadia.

And it seemed reasonable to me, because we gotta do all this stuff for our game anyway. The example I used was: MCDM Dwarves. We have our own take on dwarves which I think a lot of people will like! And we want our own visual design to go along with that new dwarf game design.

So I figured the first Tales From Arcadia article would be MCDM dwarves for 5E. We’d figure out how dwarves work in our game, then pay someone to convert it to 5E. And the article would show off our visual design, here’s the rules for playing an MCDM dwarf in 5E, here’s a bunch of lore, maybe some items, enemy dwarves you can fight, who knows?

Well, we had a big meeting where we talked about this first Tales From Arcadia article and it all sorta fell apart. Mostly it was Jason, our art director, who brought us back to reality. 😀

As we talked about this first article we accumulated a list of annoying questions. Like, will this first TfA article look like a regular ARCADIA article? Layout and everything? Will it have a cover? Will that cover feature our dwarves?

Well, sure, it should have a cover, even though it’s only one article. And…yeah it should feature our dwarves! Only one article, dwarves, it would be real weird if there was a cover but it had nothing to do with the subject of the article.

But that’s a problem! Only reason we were able to get ARCADIA done, and get such dope covers, was that the covers had nothing to do with the interior! So no scheduling problems where the artist can’t start working on the cover until we know what the articles are about. Also! I assumed the article would feature dwarf illustrations!

Jason argued very strongly that this was a mistake and he walked us through why. Flee, Mortals! has a lot of original visual design in it. There’s nothing special, visually, about the MCDM Griffon or Manticore or Zombie or Vampire. But the Overmind, the Voiceless Talkers, the Time Raiders, the Valok, the ORCS, all have their own unique visual design.

And I don’t know if you folks know this, some of you do because I’ve talked about this, but not a lot of companies in this space do this! Usually, when they pay for art, the art they pay for…goes in the book!

Not us!!

All those monsters, the Voiceless Talkers, the Time Raiders, all the original visual design we do, creates a whole other phase of development. The Visual Design phase where the art team brainstorms and noodles on “what do these things look like?”

There’s a lot of experimentation and dead ends. But even once we have a final visual design, where we all say “yes!” and we’re really excited, that piece of art does not go in the book. It’s not an illustration, it’s a piece of concept art designed to show our freelance artists “this is what our Orcs look like” so that they can make orc illos for the book.

None of this art is in Flee, Mortals! These are all art design exploration.

Jason often starts by sculpting in 3D clay.

Goblin idea.

Time Raider heads!

THIS is an actual Time Raider illo from the monster book, but here you see the kind of feedback Jason gives the illustrator.

We thought it would be cooler if, instead of Golems, we have Robots. Since Golems are, basically, robots. So we started by wondering "what did they look like when they're new?" And then the ones you meet in a dungeon are defunct, rusted, covered in dust, and resemble statues.

But I think we liked our robot design too much to beat it up and make it look old and broke-down, so there's a good chance the MCDM RPG will have Valok and Golems!

Anyway this process…you have no idea how long it will take. It could take three days, or three weeks. Or three months! Not literally “90 days of drawing,” more like “well, we noodled on this for a few days and came up empty. Let’s put this down and work on something else and come back to this problem later with fresh eyes.”

On the Monster Book, and we think on the RPG, that’s not really a problem because there’s so much work to do. There’s always some other design or art direction to work on while you’re stuck.

This was all by way of Jason explaining…we got no idea how long it will take to figure out what MCDM Dwarves look like, Matt. Sure, one article a month is less than three, easier to do, but even at one article a month…we got no idea what MCDM Dwarves look like! And no idea when we WILL know! Could take three days or three weeks! How do we schedule out even one monthly article when we have no idea how long the art will take?

And let’s imagine the concept art takes two weeks? Well it’s only AFTER those two weeks that we can get any artists started drawing the actual article illustrations. This is not normally a problem! If an Arcadia article references dwarves? Well, all the artists we work with know what dwarves look like, they can just draw the final illo.

But here those artists need to wait for us to figure out “what do OUR dwarves look like?” And that adds a lot of time to the schedule.

I couldn’t argue with that. There was some talk of saying; ok let’s just do one regular 5e ARCADIA article each month, like we used to do.

At this point several people objected and I agreed with them. It’s not that we don’t want to make more stuff for 5E, we got a lot of ideas for our game that we think could be translated into 5E rules and be really successful for 5e players.

It’s just…we can’t get distracted. We need to focus on the RPG, we need the whole team to focus on the RPG. Under this model, producing any ARCADIA-style content is a distraction for us. Since we launched ARCADIA, there has never been a time when everyone at the company was all working on the same project, and only that project, and we are really looking forward to that.

“We should be focused on this game, it’s what we all want to do, and there’s an audience waiting for it. Let’s focus on giving those people what they want.” Ok well…hard to argue with that!

So instead of a new ARCADIA article in August featuring MCDM Dwarves, with all these rules and lore and art, we’re just going to post stuff to the $8 and $10 MCDM+ tiers when it’s done. Dwarf sketches, ancestry rules, dwarf illos, dwarf lore, all that, whenever it’s done. And then…everything else. You might get a draft of the new Tactician soon. You might get a draft of a prototype Mage soon. Whenever something’s done, we just post it here.

I don’t know what the future holds, but I think this means you’ll get a LOT of content. I feel like we’re ramping up to that right now.

So the whole point of this post is just: I know I said Tales From Arcadia and I do think something ARCADIA-like will happen eventually, but right now we all need to focus on the RPG. That’s what excites us, and we think that’s what excites a lot of YOU.

And there’s plenty there to get excited about! More RPG Posts soon!

This completely makes sense. While I liked the idea of the arcadia articles continuing I definitely would prefer the rpg to have more resources devoted to it. That'll make it come out faster and at a higher quality overall. Good call mcdm team

Mark Fagoh II

Sorry for if I missed this, but having a hard time finding how/where to end up getting the Where Evil Lives book - guessing this will be announced at a later time?

Hyodorio

Makes sense. I'd be really down for Tales from Arcadia but it's true that would continue to spread the team. Excited for what's coming anyways and I'm glad that there's still some interesting in some 5e content to be honest, even if it can't be done now

Tyler Smith

So exited for the RPG, full steam ahead!!

NealSig

I am excited to see y'all focus more on the rpg!

Andrew

Always appreciate the transparency and I trust the process to yield great things for you guys. Do what you feel is best. I can’t wait to see it.

Roman Penna

I am ready for all of the RPG content- all of it!

Lachlan Orr

Based on what Matt has said in the livestream stream I believe that if you have kickstarted / pre-ordered Flee Mortals then you will also be getting Where Evil Lies as a pdf. (Long story short, the lairs component made the physical book too big / expensive so it is being parted out into a separate pdf (if you want a physical copy of the lairs book will be a separate purchase available sometime in the future.)

Lachlan Orr

Makes good sense and sounds wise, even if it is a little disappointing. I'm looking forward to what is coming down the pipeline.

M!

This is super reasonable. Thanks for communicating it so candidly.

Gho5tRun3R

Disappointing, I subbed for Arcadia and it was a joy to have, like the old Dragon magazine, and I'm gonna miss it. I'm a bit disappointed that after all the big outrage and boycotting toward WoC we ended up with everyone making their own RPG anyway. BUT! What I super appreciate is you all releasing parts of stuff to the tiers when it's done. It's not Arcadia, but it's a nice balm for when I need some MCDM inspiration pieces to get my creative juices flowing again. Thanks for the transparency and work you all put in and I hope to see Arcadia back one day.

Sergei Lakissov

I am very happy about your decision. Subbed for the new RPG, and always curious to see bits of content for it. And obviously, this is the only way you can _really_ focus on the RPG, so it makes perfect sense.

Gordon McAlpin

I’d love to see more of this concept art and behind the scenes stuff make it into an Art of MCDM book or PDF. You’d just need a little new text to weave it together and a certain layout artist you work with regularly could make something really cool with (probably) no new art. 😛

Mendelll

I'm a little sad that this way there's nothing left for my original 5 dollar Patreon Tier. But what you say makes a lot of sense, and having as many recources as possible go to the RPG sounds very exciting indeed. The best of luck!

Peter Gorbert

Yeah this settles it for me. I subbed for Arcadia so I’ll be off after this final issue.

Mathew Bain

Can't help but be disappointed with the end of Arcadia, but I get it. Focusing the team is critical to get something as complex as a RPG system out the door. Ultimately, I'm not convinced the MCDMRPG is for me yet, I have not been enthused about the concepts we've seen so far. Once the last issue of Arcadia is out, I will be dropping this subscription, but keeping an eye on things at a distance.

MixUpPixels

Really pleased about this direction - ARCADIA will be missed but I look forward to treasuring these 30 issues for a long time to come. Excited about the whole team working on the RPG!

Holy Pickle

Well, happy to see you guys working on something new. But will likely need to consider if I should stop my membership till I see if what’s new is something to invest in. Not sure I can invest a lot of dollars into a new system yet. Thanks for all the Arcadia issues!!! I loved every one of them.

Daniel Gill

It was announced in a Kickstarter update for flee mortals iirc. It's pdf only I think

GMG

Sadly I'm on the same boat! I figured that the game updates are not that interesting to me. I will love to see the final design you guys will come up with, but the money I would spend in the patreon then will be saved to the kickstarter. Good luck with the design, I know it will be awesome! Just have to figure out what to do with the 'monthly issue of arcadia' hole that will appear in my life now. I loved all the issues, and I'm sure I will love the last one. Great work!

Takobaited

Well, that’s a bummer. If there’s no promise of even a “Tales from Arcadia” and everything will be about your RPG, then I can’t bring myself to stay. It looks cool, but I didn’t sub here to only get game design info dumps that go entirely over my head. Good luck on the future stuff, I guess.

Tony Gordon

Really sad, I'm supportive of the team doing what they love best and that is clearly building the game itself. But many of us came here for the content, from YouTube through to Arcadia and now there is none of that left, it is hard to justify staying. Very sad, but wish you all the best

Tim

As many have said the loss of Arcadia is sad. I would happily keep subbing but with Running the game videos being rare, no further 5e content (which is what my group play) I'm unsure what I'd be paying for. A behind the scenes of how game design works? Matt has always said that he's cognisant of what is enjoyable to watch on YouTube and Twitch but at the minute the thing that's missing is content to watch, read and play. This is just one guys opinion though and I'd be super happy to be proved wrong.

Craig Robinson

As much as y'all had me hooked with the idea of Tales From Arcadia as a quasi product, I actually dig this approach even more. It'll feel like Graves sifting through forbidden histories at the library of Saint Sebastian and suddenly uncovering some🤘inflection points in Orden's history. Maximally stoked to see what y'all come up with.

Reformed Hillbilly

I am very happy with this approach. The sooner the game comes out, the sooner I can switch my table over. Of course, there is the matter of leaving D&D. My table is divided in half on the subject. They all want to stay and I don’t. Haha. But seriously. We are all excited. While I can’t wait for a game that actually supports heroic fantasy and dynamic movement, my players are chomping at the bit to play talents and operators.

C.W. Elliotte

It hurts my heart that y'all have such a talented digital sculptor and I can't 3D print any of your stuff, but I get that you can't do everything.

Craig W Cormier

You mention the Talent in the opening to this article. Are you going to release a finished 5e version of that class at some point? I have a player who has been using it since the 3rd beta document, but if it is never going to be finished I would like to work on switching to a different psionic offering. That said, I'm sad that you won't be continuing ARCADIA. I think its a mistake to abandon the concept, even if it slows down production on your rpg. Good luck on this path though!

Matt

I'm right there with you! I'm ready to drop 5e like a bad habit.

Bryce Miller

I think my table won't totally leave WotC D&D (mainly because the other DM in the group has invested a lot of money into having the sourcebooks in Roll20), but we talked about adding other games just the other week. Some of my players are not very ... keen on tracking noodly bits, so I think they'll really the cinematic direction of the MCDM RPG.

NealSig

The 5e Talent is definitely still coming. I am unsure if there's any timeline beyond "before the end of the year", but the holdup on the project for a while was needing art done. Now that art for Flee Mortals is done, the 5e Talent is being worked on again

Reformed Hillbilly

For my table, I’m the one that spends the time and money to get all the books and stuff and build the most fun experience I can for my players. I like homebrewing and tailoring stuff to my setting. However, it takes a lot of work to make combat fun. Half of my table have only played in my game. So when one of them played with a new group, they came back and complained how boring combat was in the other game. I had them describe the game in detail. Turns out, the other DM did a perfectly fine job. They played the game straight. I explained this to my player and used the ogre from the MM as an example. They looked at the ogre according to the rules (not how I run them) and said, “That’s it?”

Reformed Hillbilly

Yeah. Funny thing, my vet players were the easiest to convince. It’s the ones who only know 5e and mostly only play at my table that were harder. Two things convinced them. 1) One played with a different GM that didn’t Homebrew anything. 2) I just read them the rules from the book (how crits and other things actually work) as opposed to how I have it. They realized how much work I do and how boring the actual rules are.

AngelPlayer

Matt has a video on how Halo had the greatest story ever - because of the real time development and engagement with the community. They got to witness an ai going mad. They had to figure out what was real and what was interpretation. It was an experience few have been able to have - being a part of the story instead of a reader after the fact. With this plan of moving forward, MCDM is giving us an opportunity to be a part of the same kind of story. I hope enough people realize that to help this grow like Halo did!

mcdm

I'm looking at the layout for the 5e Talent right now. We're working on finishing up the art, but we should have the PDF out on the store before the end of the year, hopefully before the end of the Summer. -James

Carmelo Sutera

While that make a lot of sense, will it be just draft and or content that would be later released in the new rpg ? I will probably switch to the 5 dollar tier if it's the case.

Javier F

I'm excited for new RPG stuff! It's the reason I subbed, and it's been a joy seeing some behind-the-scenes from a professional company like yours. Plus having more competition to corporations like WotC is always worth celebrating!

brownriggy

I do love watching the development of the new RPG, but 8 bucks a month is a bit rich for me for that. Has there been any thought towards creating a lower patron tier just to support development of the RPG? I note that the 5 dollar tier does not list the MCDM RPG updates as a benefit.

Marc Schelske

Arcadia was a best-in-class product. Worth being proud of, and worth missing as a reader. I'm with those who are pouring one out for that loss. At the same time, this is a good example of the good being an enemy of great. MCDM is a small company. Having decided to make an original game, if anything distracts you from doing your best to make that game great, then you're compromising on your vision. If the MCDM game is going to have sticking power in the face of the inertia that keeps so many people playing 5E, it's got to be great. Having a couple of other non-aligned projects, even good projects like Arcadia, gets in the way of your attempt to do that. Will the MCDM game be great? Nobody knows. Not even MCDM. But you've gotta give it your best shot, and that means full focus. So, I am fully behind MCDM putting all hands onto the game project, so that the outcome can be as good as it can be.

Charles Farrell

Thanks for the update. Love what y’all are doing. 😉

Anthony Fontana

Thank you so much! I'm dying for more of the new RPG content. This is a great direction!

GubDM

I imagine a lot of players are hesitant to switch over until they start thinking about their dope new character in Inevitable. Especially if the Lifepath character creation process is something you can send to your players as a tease "we don't HAVE to swap over, but try this out anyway" once the players put enough creative energy into thinking about their new dope character in the other game, they'll be ready. They'll be champing at the bit, probably.

Jacob Montague

I'm sad to see Arcadia coming to an end, but I'm excited for the new RPG.

Jesse Massaro

Oof. Matt, your videos got me ready to GM when my group started to fall apart in the face of 2020. Your vision of Arcadia was truly inspired, the product is outstanding, truly unprecedented. Better than the stuff in the 90's. It's been fundamental in my game. The Flee Mortals content has literally already changed the structure of my encounters. I backed The S&F and K&W, and use content from there often. This feels like watching a structure that buttressed my foundation, that supported me becoming the GM I am today, break off and float away. I was ready to drop 5e in February. I understand a number of reasons why you needed to act and needed to consolidate your efforts towards your own project. But as things panned out, with my current investment into 5e content and tools, and with my player's attachments and financial investments (all content on beyond shared with me for our campaigns).... we aren't looking like we'll break away from 5e. And so as you divest, I will also likely depart after this issue. I have felt a bit of "well gtf out if you're not on board" energy from you around this topic, so I don't expect you to try and keep my patronage. It makes sense not to chase two goals. Good luck in your endeavors. Sorry I couldn't follow you. I hate that this is how they win, with everyone breaking off to build their own toys. There are too many pools, some folks will fail, I hope you all thrive. You, and your team, are incredible and I want the design you all bring. Again, it's truly outstanding. UNPARRALELLED. It will live as a bubble in time. Peace, out.

Jesse Massaro

I'm likely to eat my words. Watching the first Designing the Game video, I do love the work you're doing. Maybe if my campaign finishes up in the next 3-5 years you'll have something I can present to the table. For now though, I'll drop my membership till we drop 5e. Idk when that will be.

Arash - Game Narrative 101

Here for whatever inspires you all and gets you excited. Thank you for being a bastion of art whole MCDM team.

Jesse Massaro

I hope I do, this is the design space that has excited me more than any other. I've ben playing since AD&D lol, my table played basically homebrewed/home fixed Rune Quest 3 for the majority of our lives together. Then a lot of Shadowrun, and now 5th ed. We played a ton of systems between, but those are the ones that stuck. And 5th ed has been really good to us. But we aren't strangers to alt systems. When this is stable and I have seen it I will likely pitch it to them. Seeing as the some of the most fun mechanics of the last three years have come from this design team. But even still. We're entrenched in 5e, until things shift I can't personally afford to invest. I do wish I had a larger income, if I did I wouldn't worry about this one bit, I would throw in and enjoy the truly beautiful process going on here. I felt pride in paying for content I used weekly, and gosh didn't I know it was a steal at this price too.

Arek Schneyer

Totally understandable, and from my layman’s perspective, you made the right choice- you did a good job explaining your reasoning, and it is greatly appreciated.

Mirage

I've enjoyed Arcadia, but this seems like the right call. I'm very excited to see what a fully armed and operational MCDM can do on this RPG project! No doubt we have tons of exciting stuff to look forward to in the coming weeks, months, and years.

Aaron Hartley

Looks truly amazing! Well done...can't wait for these books

Ian Sampson

Thanks for the amazing mag! I'm out on the Patreon for now, but I'll be first in line for the ttrpg Kickstarter.

BasCB

MCDM / Matt did mention that they plan to give everyone who is part of the patreon the game pdf for "free" - or rather consider they funded the development for a significant part, acknowledge that and not charge (full price? I guess it depends on the amount of Patreons, on how much goes into the game development etc?) for long time subscribers. But off course it is up to each one of us whether we go along, or just wait to see whether the game will be one we want.

David Simpson Resnick

Would be nice if 5$ legacy backers still got something...but other than that sounds good
