Hey Folks! James here! Matt and I are going to livestream here on Patreon this Wednesday at 11am Pacific time (that's tomorrow!) to talk with you all about the new RPG and take your questions. The link will be provided in another post when we go live on tomorrow. You'll be able to ask questions in chat just like any other livestream, and you'll be able to access the recording via Patreon after the stream.

Please feel free to ask any questions you have in the replies below.

No guarantee we'll get to your question! But we'll do our best. See you tomorrow!

Question - Can you talk at all about some of the ideas you have for Subclasses? We know of some (Necromancer Summoners), but what different types of, say, Tacticians or Conduits are you thinking of?

Donald Fowler

I understand you guys will likely reveal this information in your own time so feel free to skip my question if this is the case. However, I'm curious if you guys have settled on a name internally for the RPG, or if you're still kicking around ideas for it, or if you guys are waiting for more of the game to take shape before thinking about it. To clarify, I'm definitely not requesting a name reveal any time soon, just curious about the status of it.

Stuart Cook

Would love an update (if there is one) on negotiation!

Stuart Cook

What are some high level results from the contract testers getting their hands on the game?

Kyle Fukui

I know that Matt has expressed his apprehension with multiclassing, at least with regards to its implementation in 5e. Will there be options for players to gain abilities from other classes in some capacity? Or is this game going to be more tailored to sticking with one class all the way through?

John Wayman

Any ideas on if the RPG will support the fantasy of a mundane archer like Legolas? Just curious since all the non-magic classes discussed so far have been pretty melee focused

Jean-Paul Skeete

What is the highest character-level of test play the MCDM RPG has been subject to, to date? What is the MCDM RPG's current approach to character death? Is the 'Downed-not-Dead' condition still a consideration? (I've heard Matt talk about it super early in development)

Oko

I've heard of a concept in game design called the 'Iterative Loop" where you create an iteration of an idea, test it, update it to a new iteration, then test it again. It sounds pretty much like how you guys are testing the rpg. My question is: how many tests do you give an iteration of a mechanic or idea before you move forward with it or scrap it? Do you have a threshold of testing that an idea needs to go through, or do you just kind of feel it out?

Bryce Beggs

Are there any ideas as to how the Mage/Wizard class might work yet?

MixUpPixels

Hi James and Matt - Question: I know you've talked about the format of the RPG being a 3 book set before (unless I'm mistaken!). Would one of those books be an equivalent to a Dungeon Master's guide? And if so, what are the sort of things you'd like to include in one?

OoMNagent

That was going to be my question to!

Joshua Heisler

Hi gang! What were the takeaways from playing at the tables at the convention with relative strangers? Anything stand out as working unexpectedly well or not being up to snuff.

Christian Straubhaar-Jones

QUESTION: Do we have a longer list of classes yet? I know we've got conduit, talent, beastheart, and ?necromancer, in addition to old favorites like fighter, warlock?, and others.

Christian Straubhaar-Jones

Also do you all think we'll have a relatively limited and stable set of classes like 5e or significantly more classes over time like previous editions?

Dylan Bederman

Do you anticipate being able to run the "years-long" campaign that a certain type of DnD-player romanticizes? Or do you have any sense for the irl time-scale of the typical "campaign" in the ttrpg yet?

Fluf Hoftis

Question: How is the career path coming along? Will you guys release an early version with future public tests or hold off until theres a more complete version available?

Donald Fowler

There is a patreon post from March 21st (titled "Classes") that gives a decent amount of insight on their ideas for classes. Being several months old now, I imagine its probably a bit outdated. But they do discuss/mention about 13 classes in it.

micah french

Question: what do you expect Wizards magic to look like? Will there be spell slots/spell points to spend? Can wizards make their own spells? Is there something akin to a warlock like in dnd?

Austin Richards

Hello and thank you! One of the issues I've always had in games that feature both magic and psionics, is they tend to overlap. In a previous post it was mentioned a magic attack creates a magic damaging effect and psionic attack may age you, which also sounds like it could be a magical effect. Are there any design plans to either embrace the grey that can exist between magic and psionics or keep them very distinct and separate?

Cormac Connolly

Do you have any idea how many decision points/customization opportunities there will be when leveling up? It sounds like there will be classes and subclasses. Will each (or most) class or subclass also have special abilities to choose from like the 5e beastheart or the Warlock?

Otto’s Workshop

Will you follow what WotC/ PAIZO did with magical school/ traditions? Arcane, Divine, Occult, and Primal

Nathan Lee

As more of the game takes shape, does it get simpler or more complicated designing a subsystem. Like, does the weapon design get easier as classes get more detailed, etc.

wyatt wustrau

If you are answering questions from here, then thank you guys for doing this and I love that you are being so open about the development. I haven't read all of the posts yet, and only started dming recently because of your running the game series. My questions are, how "beginner friendly" do you think your system will be for beginner dms and players alike? And do you have any rough timeline on when things might hit new "stages" or do you expect the game to be out in "years". If you answer either question thank you, and if not thank you for your work helping people make more fun adventures!

Roman Penna

Hello! Hope you're both doing well. I was wondering how the go through of the first bugsheet went, and whether anything is undergoing large changes because of it?

Chris Comstock

Question: You've spoken at length about the core 2d6 system, as well as d4s for banes/boons and d8s as impact dice. Will this system use d20s for anything?

Arthur Acton

Question: How much attention do you pay to what other RPGs are doing? What’s the best way to take inspiration from other RPGs?

Project Journey by Richard Brownell

Do you have any information you can share on how scaling up in power will work? I.e. how do the numbers change for low or high level PCs and monsters? What has surprised you most in testing ideas, whether you were surprised it didn't work, or surprised it worked well?

Clark Nichols

How are you planning on handling out-of-combat use of abilities?

Azurel

How will you handle the difference between melee and ranged pc’s? In most systems, it’s not worth going into melee. Is this a question you all think about when it comes to designing classes?

Chappy Hall

Are there any updates on the adventure building system idea where you have different types of scenes (like combat, negotiation, rest) and then craft an adventure out of those in some sort of order? It reminded sort of how Flee Mortals encounter building works when I first saw it mentioned.

Reformed Hillbilly

Question: There was talk of a Druid class (shapeshifter) at one point. Is that still a possibility and, if so, will it be core?

Patrick Colvin

Any thoughts yet on physical merchandise? Custom dice, miniatures, etc.? I would be pretty thrilled to drop some cash on such items.

Patrick Colvin

In a 5e game I’m currently playing in, I find myself drawn to melee constantly over ranged because we play with the optional flanking rules. It’s really amazing how different dnd can be at different tables!

Dead Squadron Games

RPG combat tends to get slower as levels get higher, especially in D&D 4E which seems to be at least a tactical inspiration for this game. What are your thoughts for helping to avoid the high-level 'slog'? Thanks again for doing this!

Josh Williams

I'm LOVING the transparency of your dev process. It's well-worth the monthly patronage. As Vitality has evolved, do you now anticipate ANCESTRY influencing Stamina, and CLASS influencing Health? The other way around? Or no hard-and-fast rule preventing either from affecting both?

Steve C

Hi guys. Big fan of your all's work. Old grognard here!

aiden davenport

How would one play an Illrigger in the MCDM system?

Steve C

Working on a new campaign setting for a Kickstarter next year and want to use your rules. Will there be a "conversion document" to enable crossovers into any campaign setting? Thanks for taking my call. I'll hang up and listen!

aiden davenport

I'd like to piggyback and ask: Which dice will be used in the system and how important the decision was on game design?

Book4B

Will there be any testing to see if one-on-one play works?

Assopopolis

Question - How will the MCDM RPG be marketed? Can we expect a convention tour or a stream of crowd funding campaigns?

Jake Diebolt

Are the races/species expected to be fairly deep mechanically or is most of the design space for that in the classes? How easy or difficult do you expect it to be to home brew specific species?

Jake Diebolt

Has much consideration been given to magic items and their place in the game yet?

Ellery Martin

Will multiclassing be part of the design? And if so, how would the different class resources come into play?

Greydon Crites

In a recent stream, Matt mentioned not having a good place for some things on the character sheet. The warfare system already started giving players abilities and whatnot that was NOT on the character sheet, but on a card. Will that same design be implemented, or is everything gonna stay on one sheet? Thx

Edward Welsh

Roughly how many subclasses do you plan on providing for each class, and at what level will you choose one?

aiden davenport

Are Skill Challenges going to be incorporated into the MCDM game? Will each class have abilities they can activate only during the skill challenge, just like abilities in combat? I guess that would just be "scenes".

Diego Crispim

Will classes have RP specific resources? I don't dig having the bard always be the spokesperson for the group even for contexts in which he wouldn't be the front man.

p1aying_mantis

Since solo monsters get to act after each player, are they able to move their full movement each time they act?

David Park Guitar

Regarding the recent Product Line post, would the adventures in each line follow on from each other? Eg, Vasloria: adventure part 1, Warfare: adventure part 2.

Jack Charlton

Will there be a "weapon" option bonus like you get for a sword for example but for unarmed combat. IE pugilist style fighting?

Patrick Boyle

Will stamina increase as you gain levels or is that a static number? Will any of the extra systems from Arcadia such as Aces High be adapted to suit the new game?

Celeborn

How do you plan to help Directors build encounters easily?

Dhavaram

How does the death of a PC happen? Is it still up to the player or have you changed that? How hard or easy is it to have your character get killed and what is the philosophy/reasoning behind those game design decisions?

Dhavaram

Also, did you learn anything from running the game at the Con last weekend that is prompting changes?

Val

What are your current thoughts on treasure and item management? If one extreme is having to buy and keep track of rations and arrows, and the other is hand-waving everything that isn't a magic item, where on this scale will the RPG sit? How important will gold be in general, and what kind of things will players be able to spend it on?

Maharsh Patel

Hey y’all, thanks for running at the con this past weekend. It was a blast! What are some positives and negative takeaways from recent tests? Are there any design choices that are on the chopping block right now?

Abhishek Patel

First I would love to share my adoration and respect for Matt and his team. You guys to great work! From the videos to the physical products! The question I have is, what are your thoughts in crafting a story where the heroes actually go through a transformational "Hero's Journey" that positively transforms them while playing the game while playing session by session where the story reveals itself and isn't scripted. Thank you! Keep up the great work!!

Cyrus Mach

simple question; why squares over hexes ?

Schoopdoop McGoop

I love this question. Its not what most people are asking, this is great.

Schoopdoop McGoop

What's a system/rule that you guys have thought about but haven't spoken of on the Patreon yet?

Mattamue

I think I recall Matt taking about how minis aren't a core offering. What's do y'all think of releasing 3d models for 3d printing? Thinking of what the game pieces will look like on the board. Curious to see what kinds of art styles mcdm will have in mind and if it's another aspect the community could build on.

Aphrodyte

This also helps protect casters at range as well as those who can melee will do so to box enemies out from going after those at range. It has a feeling of synergy to it.

Aphrodyte

So currently what part of the game right now is having the hardest time integrating into the system, i.e. not working as well as you hoped.

JPR

Will something along the lines of the Group Maneuvers from Arcadia #13 make it into the MCDM RPG? Or do you feel that the broad array of abilities available to characters and the way some of those abilities interact with allies covers this concept?

Bestest Fin

Do you have any thoughts on design for unarmed attacks? Are they going to be weaker than weapon attacks, or on more equal footing?

BRex

With all attacks doing roughly the same damage (2d6 + modifier and then maybe + impact die), how do you integrate big damage, iconic abilities like sneak attack, divine smite or fireball into the game? Do you simply increase the number if impact dies or is health just generally lower in your games? How do you add variety and flavour to skills if damage stays rougly the same and to avoid that it may seem as if everyone is doing the same thing?

Inge

Hi, Matt has previously stated on Twitch that he imagines the adventure as a combination of mechanically defined scenes (combat, research, rest). How do you imagine this system right now and how do you think this structure will affect creating adventures for the game? Is there anything you are afraid of regarding this system?

William Charnley

Do you plan on emphasising more on the VTT elements for the new D20 game you’re developing, or the physical table top elements? Really excited either way! Thanks very much!

That black guy

With MCDM rpg have you concerted a mörk borg/cy_borg approach to third party where it's simply "hey none of these sensitive subjects but besdies that go buck wild "? Or will it be like others with the ORC and similar ? I know this is pretty early stlll but I'd think you'd all have an idea of which way you all lean .

Timo Raivonen

There has been a mention about magical items that the design will be that the characters won't have too many of them, but they will grow with them, so there will be less of a need to replace an item that has sentimental value from earlier adventures. Has the design for these kind of magical items started already and are there any examples?

Remnant Sky

What are the team's thoughts on bounded accuracy for combat encounters? Is it something that you've kept in mind or are you willing to allow situations where a level 1 party would be truly unable to pierce an ancient dragon's armoured hide for example?

Remnant Sky

I may be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure that while they were discussing the levelling speeds in the last Q&A, James said he could foresee a campaign from level 1 to 10 spanning about 6 months playing once a week or so.

Russell Davidson

How'd the playtests at Gateway Con go? Got any cool stories and/or take-aways?

Kyle Latino (Map Crow)

Looking at the recent tweet of the markerboard of product line ideas, is this a decade's worth of releases in a specific order, or is this just spitballing to see what's on minds of the team?

Drew Nelson

How integrated into rules will Kingdoms, Strongholds and Warfare be into the core rules? Or will they be more expansions like MCDMs are to 5e?

Henry J Stefanov

"Tactical" is a core pillar for this game, which I took to mean that it's designed to play on a grid. I love Battle map play, but theater of the mind has its place. Has any of the playtesting been theater of the mind? If so, what have been the testers thoughts on it so far?

Connor Boyle

Are there currently many classes in development that use unusual powers that aren't spells? If so, can we see em?

Ian Hastings

Will there be attempts to work in minor buffs like 4e feats to differentiate individuals within there own classes/ancestry? I think it does a disservice to players and their characters when every elf knows how to wield a longsword or every dwarf knows who to wield an axe.

Jim

Will we get to see a play-test stream in the future?

Edward Welsh

Would you ever plan on making a setting guide for Orden at large, expanding on the regions other than Vasloria and Capital?

Dylan Fusmer

Will some ancestries have dark vision/infra vision?

Corey C

Candidly, my vocab is weak and I failed to grok what Intuition, Vigor, and Skullduggary would be used for. When writing rules, how do you think about using flavorful words which may be unintuitive for the non-lexicomanes?

GubDM

Interested to hear the vision of the "space combat" after Matt's reticence toward naval combat in 5e. Will the design use the star trek rules as the starting point? Or ground-up design?

GubDM

How did the games at the picket line go? Any surprises or big takeaways after showing it to people outside the MCDM circle?

Kill Your Masters

Will you be updating Flee Mortals to fit the new system?

Kill Your Masters

And do you see this as being a three book (GM guide, Player's Handbook, World Book/Monster Manual), or just one with all three components?

Chris Comstock

I have seen that one! I loved it, one of my favorite DtG vids so far. It's part of what made me wonder about d20s.
