Hey Folks! James here! Matt and I are going to livestream here on Patreon this Friday at 11am Pacific US time to take your questions about the RPG. The link will be provided in another post when we go live on Friday. If you've got questions, you can ask them in the comments of this post. You'll also be able to ask questions in chat just like any other livestream, and you'll be able to access the recording via Patreon after the stream.

No guarantee we'll get to your question! But we'll do our best. See you Friday!

Woohoo! Live streams with you guys are the best! Question: Any more details on dwarves? Like game statistics, detail on their potential damage reduction. I’m totally here for a dwarf discussion live stream!

wyatt wustrau

What has surprisingly been the hardest problem to work on, so far?

aiden davenport

With positioning being so important, how in depth are terrain options going to be? 5E feels mostly like different flavors of difficult terrain.

Itallian Moose

How are you guys doing playtesting? And what dose "balance" look like for your game. Been designing a lot for an rpg of my own and in having trouble balancing the game. Hopefully your insight will help a bit. Don't even know where to start when it comes to playtesting my material.

Douglas Grion Filho

How easy/difficult do you expect homebrewing classes to be?

Josh Williams

Can you share more details about the Elf image you posted on Discord? I love it, and would love to know if it illustrates a specific type of Elf.

Oko

How powerful do you want the players' magical effects to be at high levels of play? Any Wish-like shenanigans?

Jack Charlton

Are you guys having advantage/ disadvantage or is that what boons/ banes are for?

Game Academy

With so much happening I'm excited to see what you guys have to talk about! Question: So far you've talked about the way classes are currently tested are more fascimeles of a 3rd level character. How do you go about taking those concepts that make a class have a certain feel and then distribute those across the classes level progression? What makes certain Tactician abilities slot into 1st level instead of 3rd, etc?

Jack Charlton

Any more thoughts on what role armour will now have in the latest version? Does it still modify your pushable distance?

Jack Charlton

Does the current (awesome) career system cause any mechanical changes to your character IE stat changes / skills etc? Or is it just to give great flavour only backstory?

Declan Murphy

Question: how do you wealth and treasure will fit into this heroic and cinematic game? Do you feel as though tracking coins and gems or something more abstract? If you have any ideas for a wealth system or guidelines what is your current thinking regarding that

GubDM

why do humans have so many gods?

Scott Layher

Will MCDM have a presence at GaryCon?

Game Academy

Dwarves definitely seem like they'll be first up for mechanics, and I think with good reason. But I can't wait to see what they have in mind for all the different ancestries and what they can do!

aiden davenport

My favorite Arcadia was the monster parts as spell components, Will this concept be in the new game?

Philip Richardson

Right!? I don’t think I have been this excited for a game since I first played DnD. That teenage desire to consume as much knowledge as possible is back in full force with MCDM!

Philip Richardson

Solid question! I am also wondering about this. Indiana Jones always seemed to be able to catch so many flights without paying…

Ayden Birch

This question may have already answered in a previous Q&A, but I'm curious about how (or even if) Rangers would be a thing within your system. Are rangers a subclass or would they be a core class?

Matthew Hewett

Much of the class and combat design so far from the MCDM RPG seems to put a premium on evoking a particular feeling/fantasy for the *player* (e.g. the Reaver's skills evoke the sense of channeling fury in combat, etc.). Is the design behind Negotiation the same (and should it be the same)? Are *players* meant to feel like they are master liars, diplomats, and soothe-sayers in a negotiation through the mechanics? Sure players can role-play being more charismatic, but is there anything in the negotiation design that evokes that fantasy?

Adam Maag

What will the final page count be for the core game? ( ie. phb, mm, dmg) With the recent Talent release at 100 pages , and Flee Mortals being huge, but missing out on many fantasy trope creatures. (Still love the book) It seems a full game will take a book shelf just to play basic.

Etienne Hébert

Do you have a estimate when the backerkit campaign will start and when the game could be finish?

Phillip Ada

Hi, MCDM. Given Introcaso's poll asking about how people like to track (or not track) wealth in TTRPGs, is that a piece of design soon getting attention and taking shape? How do either of you feel personally about tracking wealth? Do you like tracking each coin, its worth, its weight, and its location?

Christian Lange

Hi James and Matt. What are your thoughts on the Druid/Shaman archetype as a class or subclass in the game? Is there a place for the wise nature-lover who communes with the spirits of the land?

Bestest Fin

I don't know if Matt already mentioned this on stream, but have you been able to playtest the more involved career system (where a soldier would be picking their army, company, battles fought, etc) yet? If you have, how did it hold up?

alon yairi

although it is probably too early for that, how would you approach the design of magic items?

Sergei Lakissov

I love the world of Eberron and would like to GM a campaign soon; how easily will your RPG be translatable to Eberron?

BRex

Will the ttrpg have something like feats or backgrounds that give players more options to customize their characters? And on that note, will we see other customization options such as Strongholds or Followers be added to the game?

joshua stusek

Will upbringing be simply the ancestry of the people that raised you, or do you think there will be subculture options such as growing up on the street.

Alexandre Carreira

Does the team have any opinions that you can share on how exploration/ expeditions will be handled in your TTRPG?

Jan Plewa

You've often talked about wanting the players to press on. What purpose should the rest mechanic fulfill if the players shouldn't use them? Is it a failstate? Bonus Question: I'm having my fourth playtest next week and was wondering what you'd think a minimal working prototype has to feature, in the context of a ttrpg combat system. I feel I went from overprep to underprep. If you could give an example for any existing ttrpg combat system and what a mwp for that might look like, I'd greatly appreciate it :)

Jan Plewa

I'd especially like to hear about the "this item is the sword of my father and I don't want to throw it away as soon as I find a +2 sword"-problem ;)

Josh Williams

Asking for a friend: Is one fantasy goal for the Elementalist to create scenes in combat where letting the Elementalist complete a spell has awe-inspiring (read “most damage dealt so far by a PC”) results?

Thomas van Lankveld

Where does mcdmrpg stand on system mastery in character building? And will it protect unskilled players during character building? An experience with 5e taught me that even at low levels, players that make character building decisions based on flavor can be punished pretty brutally: I once saw a 3rd level fathomless patron warlock (not a hexblade) take pact of the blade because they thought it would be awesome to summon a trident in the middle of the battle. During play they discovered that with their 8 strength it did 1d6 - 1 damage. Meanwhile the minmaxed rogue was using Hex to do 4d6 + 3 damage on attacks with advantage. I like how Shadowdark uses randomized advancement to prevent minmaxing, but when the warlock's player tried it they felt like it lacked depth in character customization.

Alexandre Carreira

Have any challenges surrounding action economy emerged? If so how did you balance around having 1 enemy vs 5 different ones?

DirectorZarroph

One thing I've really enjoyed about the MCDM products (and particularly the Class PDFs) is that they are packaged as the main product first, with extra bells and whistles, rather than as a generalist book trying to appeal to everyone like many other companies seem to have moved toward. For example, Kingdoms and Warfare had the adventure to teach the mechanics of the book, rather than to add a different thing for people that didn't like kingdom mechanics so they'd buy the book anyways. Do you have any thoughts on how the MCDM RPG "DLC Boxed Sets" will approach this topic? Are boxed sets are more appealing from your perspective than, say, releasing new classes and monster tomes as standalone products like the 5e line you have? MCDM feels distinctly "consumer friendly" to me, so I'm curious what a "consumer friendly" approach will look like in the future when it comes to selling a whole RPG.

Addison Albert

How do you make mechanics that are unintuitive and disconnected from reality, but exist as a staple of D20 game design (specifically, I am thinking of hit points) and turn them into mechanics that simulate what the PCs are actually doing?

Shawn R Johnson

One class you’ve talked about is the operator, so whit the idea that mechs exist in the world are you also going to be adding weapons like guns? And if so to want technological level would you stop at?

The Dice Society

You guys talked about catering to some player expectations with class design (e.g. Shadows being stealthy glass cannons), but y’all also put forth a few awesome new ideas (e.g. the dwarves!). Where do you want to fall on the classic-innovative spectrum? How do you decide when to follow traditional D20 “conventions” and when to throw them away?

Daniel Hendricks

Just a few questions to ask :). 1.) Speed of play: Do you have a specific target on how long combats would take, how quickly each person turn should be, and how many rounds you see it being? 2.) Are the players choices in building characters going to be a key part of game? (ie will character powers be more important/powerful then say the magic items they discover along the way?) 3.) How common is character death? : a rare event, uncommon, common occurrence?

Noah Topper

You've said the game won't have that much emphasis on dungeon crawling or exploration. I'd eventually like to run a West Marches campaign. Do you think your game would be ill-suited to that? Or could it be a good choice?

Noah Topper

I believe Matt once said he’d like to use Fantasy Grounds at the table as a playing aid. If you were to develop a VTT for the game, would potential use at the table be a design goal?

Jean-Paul Skeete

From a strategic standpoint, does the changeover from 5E to One D&D in 2024 create a market opening for the inevitable MCDM RPG or are you completely unconcerned with Seattle's launch dates?

Lilcultish Inc

Would you guys be open to selling art books of all the art you've already commissioned but thrown together in a single pdf like Mana Project Studio does? I was snipping images out of Flee Mortals to turn into digital tokens for my games and often the background shifted colors or there was text too close to the image and so I had to paint away these irregularities to get a good token. Plus I know I've missed some art in various things you've done and you guys commission great art so this would be an easy way to double dip so to speak and allow digital DMs to more easily use your art for their games. Love your work team!

Justin Renfroe

Do monsters and players still have ability defenses?

Donald Schepis

Do you think the evasion rolls will fold into resisting Save Ends effects as well? Or is the 50/50 shot feeling pretty good?

GubDM

I heard Matt's latest plan/idea for the Career Path on a twitch stream. I remember in the first Big Idea for the Career Path, he floated the idea that you could DIE in character creation, but it would take you to another section of the career path and you could GAIN COOL SHIT BY DYING, like a title or something, which I think is fuckin rad. Is that still something that could fit in the latest career path version, or that an idea put on the shelf now for somewhere else?

GubDM

I can already hear Matt sighing and re-explaining that west marches is just a style of play where you don't meet to play until your players tell you what they want to do, not necessarily a dungeon crawler nor a hexcrawl

Mendelll

The most recent post about Mitigation and Avoidance talked about 'mathing it all out', and certain mechanics being mathematically equivalent to others. This made me wonder: how do you deal with the tension of how stuff mathematically (quantifiably) works out, and how stuff actually 'feels' (qualitatively)? I imagine sometimes these correspond quite well with each other in soms instances, but not at all in others (with the humans being intuitively bad at statical reasoning and all).

MixUpPixels

Kia ora from New Zealand, and congrats on releasing the Talent! Question: is the plan still to do crowdfunding this year?

aiden davenport

Have you thought of what magic items will look like?

Mira

Last stream Matt said that in the system, the average person has a 0 in most of their stats but that Heroes don't have 0s, but I can think of lots of examples from heroic fantasy of characters that probably have some "bad" stats. Elric definitely has a low Constitution, and the film version of Gimli probably has a low Wisdom. Physically weak wizards and slow-witted Barbarians are classic archetypes a lot of people enjoy. Are characters with those kinds of flaws going to be playable in the RPG?

Noah Topper

There's a lot I could say to argue this point, but regardless, the campaign idea I have in mind is a more classically West Marches style game. I'm sure you can adapt that style of play to something pretty different if you wanted, but that's not what I'm trying to do. So my question still stands and I think its intent is clear.

Joe G

Re: the Avoidance & Mitigation post. Do you see the Director rolling defence for every single monster, or for example might minion types still have a static defence number while important monsters and enemy NPCs roll defence like player characters? I assume it's a question that can only really be answered by testing but just wondering if you had initial thoughts. Thanks!

Skyao

What are your opinions on "scale of distance" in tactical RPGs? Should average 'long distance' be 3 squares, or 7? How do you decide what's right for your game? I think I'd prefer shorter distances. If D&D was like it, designing dungeons would be much easier, and battlemaps would need less table-space.

Shakepshere

Will subclasses allow a class to dip into another role? For example, could a subclass allow a striker to also be a controller. Or will the subclasses try to stay within a given role.

Jeremy Scroggs

I really liked the idea of stamina and health being separate because it was so easy to imagine taking stamina damage (you dodge but lose some energy) or taking hit point damage (you were too slow and took an actual wound). With armor adding to HP, I struggle to fit that idea into the "reality" of the game. If a character takes 10 damage and has heavy armor, does healing magic... fix your armor? Do you have any ideas about how to fix that sort of "imagination dissonance"?

Paul Alfred Brown

How big of a difference do you see a race(ancestry/heritage) making in a character? I assume less than a class but as much as a Kit or other choices?
