THE FURY IS BACK, BABY! That’s right, it’s time to show off another class from the MCDM RPG to you all, and this time it’s the fury previously known as the reaver (and yes, before we called it the reaver, we called it the fury … hence the title of the post).

Hey folks, James here! I want to share another prototype class with you. All the caveats from Matt’s post where he shared the tactician still apply. While this class is far more up to date with our latest design, it is still a prototype.

So, what is a fury? Well, the fury is a strong, tough, mobile melee warrior who uses rage as a Heroic Resource. As the fury builds up their rage, they earn passive bonuses. They can also spend that rage to dish out some devastating attacks.

This particular fury is an orc who uses the Panther kit, so you also get to see some rules for that ancestry and kit! A version of this prototype will soon be coming to all MCDM+ Patrons in the first Patreon playtest packet.

By the way, the BackerKit campaign for this RPG is currently underway. But if you’re only interested in getting the PDFs, you should read this announcement before you pledge!

We are beyond thrilled that the campaign has already funded! You folks have made the development of this game possible to the point where we could get it to crowdfunding, so we owe you a lot of thanks. In fact … I mean, we could show off just one more prototype, right? Just like, a little peek at a human conduit who might also be part of the same packet.

If you’re reading that, you’re probably wondering what the Prayer Table is. Well, each conduit has a prayer table that corresponds to the god they worship. Some favor wrath over virtue or vice versa, and some have a more even spread of both, like the one below, which is meant for 1st-level conduits.

Prayer Table

d6       Gift

1          0 virtue, 2 wrath

2-5     1 virtue, 1 wrath

6         2 virtue, 0 wrath

That’s it for now! If you want to talk about this design with other Patrons, don’t forget to head on over to the MCDM Discord. Thank you so much for your support, folks!

Ex animo,

Woooo! Now if only the Fury could have Reaver points instead of Rage. 😆

Jason Minkler

This is so cool, congrats guys on 2 million

SuccessfulGeek

You guys are awesome. I am only getting the PDFs but had to back at least for $1 to participate in the backerkit :-)

Evil Tome Compendium

One of my least favorite things in RPGs is a +1 or +2 modifier. It is the most easily forgotten or overlooked or its often remembered after the fact disrupting the flow of the game / narrative. For Skill Proficiencies, maybe consider roll 3d6 drop the lowest instead?

extraordinari

Will the patrons get playtest packets periodically like the backers or is that a benefit to the backers specifically?

Old Gold

Congratulations on the backer kit and number of backers!!! Sorry if this has been answered but is there a difference between patron and “mcdm+ patron”? I think I pay about 8 bucks a month and I don’t want to miss out on the party if there is one thank you!!

Old Gold

Also my players looked at me a little bit sideways when I gifted them a bloodhawk in 5e with stat block but they are really getting it now and it’s so cool in battle. I love all the design parallels seen here with fury and resources building as the battles go on. Boon and bane dice look cool too!!

Kas Slaghekke

Man, this stuff is already looking pretty cool. Cannot wait to get the beta packet and start testing the game!

Corey Catuara

What is the frequency that PCs can use maneuvers? Is it once per turn, once per Encounter, something else? It looks like a separate time from the action, can a PC do both on a turn?

Aidan Boyle

MCDM+ is the name of the tier, they seem to have gotten rid of all other tiers so if you're a patron, you're an MCDM+ patron

Old Gold

Beautiful thank you so much!

Chappy Hall

Just reading these abilities made me excited to play! Haven't felt that way reading character abilities in any system for a long time.

mcdm

Patrons will get packets before backers. Then those packets will go to backers. -James

Congratulations on the BackerKit's success so far, 2 million in a day! I'm liking that gaining your class resources involves rolls, I've enjoyed that in the 5e Beastheart. It's also cool to see just how useful your ancestry abilities can be, the orc looks truly relentless.

Ryan

I’m happy to see the prayer table is just 1d6, I was worried it would be too complicated

Gabrielle

I wonder how many victories does a party usually stack up before they rest/the adventure is over?

hazelmayn

i want to play these! but.. im... im going to need a bigger bag of caltrops

BasCB

Pretty sure a maneuvre is one of the things you can do each round - it can mean you move, or do something cooler instead.

Dee Kay

I like the fury concept reminds me of the fury warrior from World of Warcraft.

BRex

As a Barbarian fan, this iteration of a raging warrior is all I wanted from the Fury! You really feel like an intimidating force on the battlefield. My only question is: what is meant by Ongoing 6 in the Fury's Wounding Strike ability? Is that Bleeding? Does it take 6 damage "ongoing" until the target reaches the TN?

Craig Lockley

Hadn’t realised what I was missing on the $5 tier. Upgraded!

Irving Flanagan

I have a question about the Conduit's Heal ability. It says it lets the target use a number of recoveries equal to the number of Virtues spent. Is that number limited by the target's remaining available recoveries? Is the Conduit's ability to heal effectively capped by the target's recoveries? Or could the Conduit potentially "give" the target recoveries?

mcdm

The target can't spent more recoveries than they have. The conduit doesn't have a way to give people more recoveries at 1st level. -James

mcdm

Welcome! -James

mcdm

You can take one maneuver and one action OR two maneuvers on your turn. -James

DailyPasta

I wanted to ask this question because I can foresee it coming up in my own games when I run this. For things that say "Spend 1 Fury: Add 1d4" I can see my players going like "Oh so if I spend 2 Fury, I can roll 2d4 right?" or something like that. Is it intended to be "Upcast" or is it you just can spend 1 Fury as written on the tin?

Jake Diebolt

I think they’ve only just started doing tests at the ‘adventure’ level so probably no one knows yet. I suspect it will depend on how hardcore each of the challenge is, and how many recoveries it consumes, since Recoveries are so far the only rest-recharging resource. The system as set up would seem to discourage having ‘filler encounters’ as is usually found in d20 games where the enemies are only there to attrit player resources. In this system trivial encounters actually BUFF the players by granting them a victory.

Gabrielle

Cool thoughts, thanks for the comments

Brennen Hilgendorf

So excited to try these out when the Patreon playtest is released. I’d love to try out the Jagged Edge Hideaway with it.

Nathan Lee

The Conduit ability says you can spend 1+ Virtue, so my guess is that *some* abilities let you up cast (and they'll say so), but not everything.

DailyPasta

Ahh! That makes sense. I didn't see that. Thanks! :D

Ernge

I really love that the Orc and Human have powerful abilities! D&D 5th edition's races felt very insignificant compared to the class but I like that these abilities let you feel like it MATTERS that you're an orc or dwarf or what have you.

Werner Meier

Reading the Orc Fury makes me so happy. I want to play a Minotuar fury who carries a log with handles (like a ram) and go to town with the cool abilities you've given the class

Ernge

Oh I hadn't thought of that. If you get a victory but don't lose many resources, it's a net gain. That's probably why the preview pages (I think that's where I remember this from?) said that trivial battles can grant 0 victories at the Director's discretion.

Timo Raivonen

Is there meant to be some kind of a limit to the signature moves? For the old tactician, all of the more special moves had a cost to them and here it seems like not all of them do.

Ace Of Swords

seeing the rules for the fury and especially kits makes me think this game could run Dark Sun or something Conan-adjacent really well. Gets me excited for the backer packet!

Alex Accardi

Is strike back supposed to say "spend 1 Rage" or is Fury both a class and a resource?

mcdm

Spend 1 Rage. TYPO! Sorry. -James

Jon Powers

Is there a reason why both the conduit and the fury have the same health but a different bloodied value?

CrazyIke

I suspect Bloodied comes from the Base Health, whereas the actual Health counts the Kit's bonus. Which is to say, the Fury likely has higher base HP, but isn't wearing armor.
