I always read the Doobs telephone/book line of questioning is sort of an "idiot savant" response to Jake. Jake argues they don't have one because "they're old and out of date!" Doobs replies by asking about a landline phone and a book, the line of reasoning being that both are even older and more out of date things that are still completely normal to see in offices. He's basically saying "you still use this old and out of date shit, so where's your cd-rom drive!?" I know that wasn't the original intention but Mr. Goose stumbled upon a point there.
