I loved this episode. The runner of Jake wanting to be a musician/artist was incredibly entertaining. Honestly, I would watch 20 minute episodes of you guys just doing loose improv like you always do. Or, heck, I live in Australia, you boys can just come down to my house and do it for me personally. I'll give you the deets. Also, a note about the D&D question, and to Amir about the DM: DMs mostly do their rolls in secret for many reasons. Firstly, it's to hide the characters stats (as Jake touched on), so if they roll a 16, and the DM asks if a 21 hits, the players now know he has a +5. Secondly, it's so they can do secret rolls related to things the players don't know about. Thirdly, the DM is actually allowed to lie about rolls. A decent amount of RPG books recommend for the DM to lie about a roll if the outcome makes it unfun, like a boss instakills two players because he got a couple lucky rolls or something. But in the example given, it sounds like the DM was being unreasonable and making it unfun.

I’d be interested in hearing more about Grand-dad Blumenfeld building towns in a country that didn’t exist yet, seriously. That sounds incredibly interesting.

I wanna pitch in with a 'never lie about rolls as the DM'. Lying about rolls breaks down the integrity of the game and is never necessary anyway. There are other, better ways to use DM fiat to avoid or mitigate potentially unfun outcomes of rolls. I roll almost everything in the open. Who care if players know the monsters' attack and AC? Trying to math out numbers is not the fun of the game. For some reason it's important to me that Amir doesn't get the wrong impression of the game.

This video was great, but it could have used some ads. Some hot fan ads.

I think that's so lame to lie about rolls. If there's no risk of the characters dying, there's no stakes! That's why we have death saves, right? I know that sometimes there are insta-kills, or you auto-fail two death saves or whatever, but if you as the DM introduce an opponent capable of that, that's on you. But to be fair, my knowledge of D&D comes from listening to all of NADDPOD and only playing a handful of sessions, so.

hear me out, what if this show was called if i were SHOE? thoughts?

Murphy is very good at building fights but most people aren't. It is pretty common to over-power a fight and need to back off on rolls some times. I am 100% sure Murphy has made roll changes once in a while to keep the game moving and fun. Killing players for doing dumb things or because of a good fight going wrong is fun but if you kill them because you accidentally over-powered the enemy that isn't fun.

I would say the wrong impression is that DM's always stick to their rolls. You may not change but the majority of DM's will make slight, rare adjustments

They said no ads but this one was clearly sponsored by VERVE. I mean Amir was presenting it perfectly with his chipmunk paw. Am I right?!
