“What can it do?” Percy asked.

“Not much,” the patriarch admitted. “I can share its senses – or sense, I should say, since there’s just the one. It’s surrounded by complete darkness, though I can just about feel the souls in its surroundings if I concentrate. If I’m not mistaken, that’s the same version of Soul Vision that your own clones possess in their disembodied state.”

Percy nodded. This wasn’t ideal. So far, it didn’t sound like Archibald would be able to use his soul clones for more than scouting, but the difficulty in handling them and their limited senses would render them somewhat useless. They were objectively worse than Micky’s sentries, since those were far easier to control and possessed a copy of his Sage’s Pond.

“Have you tried placing them inside a body?” he asked.

“It doesn’t work,” Archibald said.

Reaching behind his back and to his right, the patriarch picked up a furry carcass that Percy hadn’t noticed earlier. No. Not a carcass. The squirrel was still breathing slowly, its soul faint and dimming, but still there. Archibald must have kept the unfortunate critter alive through the careful and frequent application of life and soul mana.

Gently placing the creature on his lap, the patriarch spent a few minutes trying to send his clone into its body. The silver wisp shot through Percy’s sensory sphere dozens of times, only managing to pass through House Avalon’s camp twice. It wasn’t until the fiftieth or so attempt that Archibald finally managed to aim the whizzing clone directly at the squirrel.

The collision happened too fast to observe carefully, but the outcome was obvious enough. The squirrel’s body had rejected the clone, causing it to bounce right out and to exit Percy’s sensory bubble once more.

“That shouldn’t have happened,” Percy said.

The rodent was definitely injured enough to attract a soul clone rather than reject it. If anything, its wounds were so bad that the creature was probably beyond fixing, but that was all the more reason for it to have allowed the disembodied wisp to join it.

“So… is it completely useless?” Percy asked again. “An hour to create one, just to end up with the world’s worst scout?”

Hell, Archibald couldn’t even send them to other planets, since he wouldn’t be able to maintain a manual connection over such a vast distance. Even if he did, it wouldn’t mean much without the ability to possess people.

“Not exactly,” the patriarch said. “I’ve found a use. It’s not the most exciting thing, but it’ll make me stronger.”

A man entered the tent, looking identical to Archibald, except for his listless eyes: a life clone. The Violet spent a few minutes trying to bring back the soul clone as well. Luckily, he managed to do it a little sooner this time.

The disembodied wisp shot right into the mindless thrall, lodging itself within its flesh. Unlike before, the soul clone didn’t get rejected. Instead, it fused into the even tinier silver wisp that had always existed within the minion, causing it to expand and burn more fiercely – almost as if the two beings had always been meant for one another.

The life clone’s soul didn’t reach the size or brightness of a normal person’s, but it came pretty close. Its grey eyes remained mostly blank and unfocused, though the faintest spark of awareness lit up in the depths of the minion’s pupils.

The thick flow of Violet life mana drifting aimlessly across the clone’s body converged at its sternum, as the thinner trickle of Green soul mana coursing through its soul did something similar at its abdomen. A pair of strange cavities that vaguely resembled peanuts appeared in those two spots. They were too small and irregular to be called mana cores, though Percy didn’t have a better word to describe them – and their affinities matched those of their owner.

“My theory is that they can possess my life clones because they’re copies of my flesh. But they can’t cast spells with those tiny mana cores of theirs,” the patriarch said before his grandson even asked.

“What are they good for?”

“They passively breathe and convert small amounts of ambient mana from their surroundings, making it less costly for me to maintain them. The same is true of the mental toll they exert. They still can’t be considered fully autonomous, but the addition of the soul clones has done something to them. It seems like I can get away with providing them with mere intentions rather than having to control every muscle in their body,” Archibald explained.

“How much better are we talking about?”

His grandfather rubbed his chin thoughtfully for a couple of seconds. “It’s hard to tell with so few tests. I also can’t use the boosting art with the new affinity yet, and my second core is two grades lower. Once it catches up, I wouldn’t be surprised if I can sustain three times as many clones.”

Percy drew a sharp breath. The theoretical maximum for a Violet with the Dance would be seven hundred and twenty-nine life clones – though Archibald hadn’t dared to produce more than three hundred. He still wasn’t able to keep his boosting art constantly active, and he preferred to retain some free mana to cast other spells with.

With the addition of the soul affinity, he would be able to approach a thousand clones, and this was before even factoring in his artificial advancement!

“It’s a major upgrade,” Percy said with a sigh. “Just… not what we were hoping for.”

House Avalon’s bloodline had always been considered a strong one – even before Percy’s emergence – and the synergy between Archibald’s affinities would push it to even greater heights. However, it still didn’t hold a candle to Percy’s version of Clone. Then again, few things in the universe did.

Archibald patted his grandson on the shoulder consolingly. “It looks like you inherited a mutated version, after all. The wording in your Status is the same, but the fact that it didn’t get automatically bundled with the life affinity should have clued us in.”

“What about Aunt Isolde?” Percy asked, not expecting much. The woman had inherited the bloodline from Archibald, so she would either have the same strain as the patriarch or a different one entirely.

“She’s been much slower at clearing her channels and experimenting with it, since she lacks my experience and your clone’s help. Judging from what little she has accomplished so far, she’s in the same boat as me.”

“Phoebe won’t be happy,” Percy realized. “She won’t be able to mould another member of our family into a second me. Do you think she might reconsider allowing Machaon to kill me?”

“I’m not sure,” Archibald admitted. “She’ll still probably want to send challenges your way to accelerate your growth. If anything, she might even give him permission to slaughter the rest of us with impunity, since we’re not as useful as we thought.”

Percy’s features twisted into a grimace, which only deepened as his grandfather kept speaking.

“I’ve been putting this conversation off for years now, since I don’t want to involve myself in your personal matters, yet I suppose that this is as good a time as any to ask: have you considered having children?”

Percy sighed. It was an awkward topic, but one that he couldn’t keep avoiding. Now that they knew that he was quite possibly the only person on the planet with the “correct” strain of the Clone bloodline, his own descendants would be the only ones who stood a good chance of inheriting it. No matter how he thought about it, having kids was simply the responsible thing to do. Many would argue that it was Percy’s duty, even.

“I have considered it,” he muttered. “I’ve never discussed getting married or starting a family with Nesha though.”

“And? What did you decide?”

“I’m not opposed to the idea of having children one day. I just don’t want to be an absentee father, and I’m too busy working on a million different things to see myself raising kids properly in the foreseeable future,” Percy explained.

“It’s your choice.” Archibald shrugged. “I’m not going to press you, but I’m sure you don’t need me to explain what will happen if you die.”

Percy nodded solemnly. Many of the things that he had set in motion on Remior would continue – the planet would still steadily develop into a greater spring, the nobles would retain the knowledge of the Vault’s magiscript and the boosting art, and even the hive would probably survive without Nephthys, since the gods had kept the original Starry Princess alive and well.

However, humanity would instantly lose access to some of its greatest assets. At the very least, there would be nobody left to keep spreading the Moirais’ Decree, which would be quite a shame.

The Void Hand had gone so far as to sacrifice multiple titans just to produce a lesser version of the Decree, yet Percy could just pass it along to whomever he pleased. This was the sort of thing that even greater springs wouldn’t dare to dream of – let alone a world that had practically been an undeveloped lesser spring until yesterday.

Letting this priceless gift slip through their fingers before figuring out how to perpetuate its inheritance would be a crime.

Percy left his grandfather’s tent and his family’s camp feeling a little bummed out. Evidently, Phoebe’s Decree hadn’t named Percy and Micky “the Lone Wanderer” by accident. It had clearly understood things about them that they didn’t – things that not even the titaness who had created it was privy to.

‘I better not die then,’ he decided upon reaching his residence. ‘Not that I was planning to.’

At the end of the day, nothing had really changed. Percy had simply been told that there would be nobody left to pick up his mantle should he perish. That was arguably the assumption that he’d been operating under already, though the tiny hope that Phoebe would have found a way to make up for his untimely demise by investing in House Avalon was now gone as well.

Sighing, Percy finally summoned the plaque in his hands, activating its enchantments with grim determination. There was no time left to waste. He had to grow stronger than his enemies – be they a bunch of corrupt nobles plotting against him, a sadistic god ruling over his friend’s people with an iron fist, a furious greater spring seeking to punish him for spreading information that was best kept secret, or a cosmic cancer growing stronger and more malicious by the day.

The runes on the object lit up with a deep crimson colour, causing a foreign influence to rush into Percy’s mind.

MinE

Going straight into getting the Focus.

Iyad Al-Najjar

So one more chapter on this mind plaque and then hopefully we go and visit Sol.

Chyre

There is another possibility for why Archibald couldn't duplicate Percy's abilities - the claw thing might only work in the user's first core. It's not like the bloodline has been tested with multiple cores before, so it's entirely possible that it works differently depending on where in the body the core is located.

spookywork

The Mindset, not the Focus

Sloth

I don’t see why it would matter. There’s never been an indication core location can produce such wildly different effects for anything. Even the dance functions the same, and that would be the first thing I would expect to function differently.

Dé ku

This changes nothing. Phoebe never believed from the beginning that anyone could become like Percy simply by possessing a second spiritual core. She hoped they would have another Percy in the future; if there were many who possessed the bloodline , it increased the chances of a mutation appearing in their descendants.

Kaladin

His family should be even more valuable now. If it produced Percy once it can again. If Percy dies the gods could request/make house Avalon have as many children as possible, especially Percy's near realitives keeping a closer eye on any with a soul affinity. After a few hundred thousand years another one should be produced. Keep marrying soul mages with the bloodline until success. Not sure why it's worth it to the gods to put Percy in danger. Not sure if an individual, even a paragon, is worth risking the value Percy already brings.

mapts

Yeah but the problem with that is that as far as we know the only people with the bloodline have a life core as their original core. I still think there’s a chance that anybody born with the bloodline and soul core will automatically inherit the mutated bloodline which means there is still a chance that someone could be born in the family in the future. So I still think keeping the Avalon family alive is useful

R. Maxwell Steele

If it's just going to be a decade if failures, maybe we should just time skip to when he's progressing again?

R. Maxwell Steele

Yep. Also killing off the bloodline is extremely short sighted, even if all they have to do is wait until they have another randomly born with a soul core.... Percy knows where exactly one elemental fount is, and it happens to guarantee people born on that planet have a soul affinity. They can obviously move his family there.

Tomer Yud

omg its literally been DECADES in the story!!!!! I still can't believe he dosent help advance Sol into a greater spring. IT FUCKING HAS THE SOUL ELEMENTAL SPRING!!!

Tomer Yud

If you cant handle setbacks go read Korean light novels

Tomer Yud

besides, the second soul core for the clone bloodline is really good. they just need time to figure it out. soul is complex, even for Percy it was hard learning.

MinE

Especially since the Bloodline is Op with a Life+Soul [Clone], so Baldy alone would be comparable to a Paragon in terms of use. A Clone is typically comparable to someone 3 Grades lower, so with the Dance+2 Cores they should only be 1 Grade weaker than a normal Mage, and he'll literally have 1000s of them at Clear. F everybody if Baldy gets access to the Void Decree b/c with a Mind Core, they'll be able to bum rush most Gods.

ZaA

If it has to be in the main core, the person wouldn't have the bloodline with a pure core, and soul is even more rare.. this might be a less random mutation, in that if someone of his bloodline HAS a soul core as their initial core then maybe they'd get this mutation by default, but it might also be that they'd both need a soulcore, AND only have a chance at then getting the bloodline.

Pekka Kohonen

It looks like the “Phoebe” is not the brightest bulb, risking the life of an asset with a net worth 10x her own that she can still control anyway (if Percy dies his net worth and everything he can do like granting second cores like candy goes away). But I don’t think anyone other than his direct descendants can have the mutation. It is a one-off. The lineage itself seems prone to producing interesting mutations so maybe it is worth preserving though. But they have existed apparently for a very long time but his is the only mutation like this. Or we will find out once he gets a Life Core or something more common.

Tim

Well the next step would be to get them a stable source of beast mana either by finding one locally or transporting a spare wasp queen. Another problem is that they don't have pure mages so they would still have to import that regardless. So he would probably need to get the better beast mana method first. So greater spring is not on the table unless he supplies their entire world himself. He could have kept them better supplied, in the meantime though. Atleast so the other greenborns could advance. I just hope he gives sol the artificial advancement.

Marvin Rodriguez

It hasn’t been decades. It’s been about 1 decade. Author confirmed on chapter 714. Also Melodia isn’t even a lesser spring. They have no means of self advancement at the moment. They are dealing with the beast tides and spectral fiends as well. It’s going to take a lot to make them a self sustaining lesser spring. We don’t even know if they have a source of stable beast mana. Percy can’t supply their whole world for them, it’s just not feasible.

MinE

Oh that explains it, I thought it was a bit weird he was rushing this.

MinE

Given the standard Soul [Clone] combos well with its life version. It’s more of a minor success; plus we haven’t seen how the blessing, spectral traits, or having lower Grade gap between cores might improve them.

Tim

I image focus will take a while, if percy has to go personally probably post Macheon. Unless Phoebe happens to talk to him earlier than that.

Tim

Phoebe is like a bad gambling addict, that had a winning streak. If you keep playing you lose eventually. Idk maybe she just believes percy will pull through no matter what or she has a failsafe. But said she won't interfere i believe that.

Iyad Al-Najjar

I think he can for the current world. The population is not much since they are near going extinct due to the beast tides. He also can buy karmic compasses for stable beast mana planets and become a delivery guy. What I find strange is that he still did not place his mind compass on the planet yet. Also, with the current status of Rimor and the alchemy guild, I think he can support a couple of thousands if not tens of thousands of Sol's people. Then these people can in 10 years or less start traveling the planet freely.

Tim

The smart move would be to give them deluded elixirs. 1 elxir = 100 deluded elixirs which might be more feasible.

13th_Narrator

I think it's a major success. In a very different direction. It'd take a lot of work but with the right mindsets, spectral traits and mutations Archibald would be unstoppable. How would fighting look when he can create weaker demigods in minutes? Even just watching his clones combine could teach Remior so much about cores and how they're made.

Dé ku

Why do I have a feeling that they will end up with Percy's artificial method of advancement becoming their only means of progress?

Tim

Before this upgrade they could fight greens BTW. I think even before the dance. So they are 2 grades + domain gap weaker than baldy is. So they have a long way to go. Additionally to what you have said weapons and armor could make a big difference. But something like the tesskalen mutation or the human one percy wants to develop would be the best boost for the clones.

Dé ku

You're right, if he were truly at the level of a god, capable of creating copies at the level of a demigod, wouldn't they be able to spread them to lesser springs without risking their loss? Wouldn't this be exactly what Phoebe wanted by taming the monsters?

Tim

Depends on their range, he would still have to stay in orbit of the planet assuming the clones don't get recognised as gods by the planet. But I think he just needs to get them to be as strong as whites while still being a demigod. A few thousand might be able to overwhelm a weak god for some time. A god would only be 81 times stronger. But they won't have perfect teamwork nor space to attack all at the same time. So thousands of those might not kill, would still be more than a hassle especially if they infect the god with some disease. They just need someone to land the killing blow.

P enyuk

Soul mage eugenics program. I like it.

Kaladin

Ship some of Percy's children off to the soul source to grow up and establish a clan there.

retrorocket0

Might actually be only one grade weaker. We have been told that it is really hard to bridge the gap between green and blue because of lacking a domain. If they could create a domain with the clones(maybe with mind core as well, they might be able to create domains themselves or at least be able to cast spells. Either of which might allow them to fight at one grade lower so as a demigod having thousands of free white level threats by himself.

Tim

I mean there is still manual cleaning, but that would only be enough if a green-born is artificial advanced. It would also only be for people with scribing trait feasible to do on their own.

Black Rose

Before he has a kid he should probably find a bunch of things to help strengthen someone being born as a coincidence

Amazon Shopper

i feel like percy if he wanted to could easily blackmail phoebe. "you recognize this?" "Is that a karmic compass?" "Yes, and I have a clone with one at both the Void Hand and Morai Factions pointing strait to Remior, while I'm there studying alchemy. If isn't fulfilled, or if my main body dies-Remior is gone."

jacob koeller

Too be fair to Pheobe... we use the process she is using all the time... its called cooking. She is letting the dish (percy) develop in the hear/pressure until he gets where he can get. its a risk, but without any pressure he would stagnate and not be as much of a benefit as he could be. sure.. he could fail or die, but she is around to put her finger on the scale if it truly looks like he will perish. in a world where that very pressure of near death is the fastest and surest way to empower onesself, its a viable method.

Tim

Will probably inherit part of the tesskalen physice atleast. But I think his mutation projects will probably spread something similar anyway.

Tim

Funnily his kids might reach godhood before him.

Tim

His family would also be in trouble then so it's not the best option.

spookywork

Obviously Phoebe is dumb. But I have a theory that Percy is purposely allowing himself to be pressured by Phoebe. If he wanted, he could find a way to deal with Remior's gods without destroying Remior by focusing on creating alliances with other factions (like Obatala). But even he realizes that he needs pressure to grow.

Marvin Rodriguez

Percy got the compass after he and Micky merged into the Lone Wanderer. So it’s only been a couple years. Immediately after he was busy preparing for his artificial advancement, the void tournament, completing Metatron’s challenges, and taking over the fungal spire. After his confrontation with Machaon he had to deal with the relocation. He’s really just been to busy. Even if he could supply them the elixirs it would take decades to help them advance enough to matter. He’d have to use artificial advancement and I’m not sure if he is willing to do that for anybody but Sol.

MinE

Hopefully the benefit of the Soul Source works for cores formed there, so Percy can just send a bunch of Life Mages with Clone and give them second Cores to get an infinite army of Life+Soul Clones.

Iyad Al-Najjar

I agree with you. The problem is you never know when the beast waves would kill Sol. He should have marked the planet and left. Now, Sol is not giving the soul signals. At least for the last clone. Well, most likely this is the case to start a new story with Sol.

Tim

I don't remember exactly but didn't phoebe tell percy he will have to fight Machaon directly. Percy could have protested more at the time. So it has some merit that percy is fine with that arrangement.

Disclancer

I don't think it's fair to call Pheobe an idiot. You've got to remember as far as she's concerned Percy is going to die; from age, Illness, or misadventure it's all the same. In relative terms it might occur before breakfast or tomorrow morning at the latest, but regardless Percy will barely be around long at all. The only way that doesn't happen is if he ascends out of the colour realm, and the only way she knows to help ensure he can pass the final hurdle of that process is pressure, potentially lethal pressure, which risks losing the bloodline and any future prizes Percy himself would have found, but with regards to the bloodline a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush after all, and a potential Titan Percy has the potential to raise them up into the big three, far beyond a simple greater spring. True she might be burning an asset by not encouraging or forcing Percy to have kids who might inherit the bloodline, though we've heard of plenty which just reverted or died out, but she can't take the risk of alienating the god/titan she hopes Percy will become, beyond that which she is already doing by pressuring him.

Kaladin

That's ultimately my question, does she know or think he can become a god? Last time we got a chapter from her perspective that was a no when she was talking to the other God about the wasp princess. However since then he's extended his life enough and artificially advanced which I believe she can see from his status which should easily let her know. The real question is the risk of having him grow stronger, to become a paragon, and fight other world's Gods worth the risk of the millions of additional gods he would make during a full lifetime of being safe and just giving all yellow and green born mages on Remior two cores? Since he's the MC the answer is obvious but I think most world leader would avoid the risk. However Phoebe has already said she's greedy...

Storyflower

"“I’m not opposed to the idea of having children one day. I just don’t want to be an absentee father, and I’m too busy working on a million different things to see myself raising kids properly in the foreseeable future,” Percy explained." That is an idiotic statement with regard to Remior. To just impose earth morals on a planet where the populace clearly has totally different circumstances in which to grow those morals is utterly affronting for anyone following this story, I think. You can do better author.

Marvin Rodriguez

Yeah that is negligence on Percy's part. However the author has already confirmed via comments on a previous chapter that we would get a few Remior chapters before returning to Melodia. He also mentioned having a stockpile of about 20 or so chapters. My speculation is that Sol has advanced to green with both cores after all this time and Percy is going to artificially advance her to Blue.

Iyad Al-Najjar

Yes, it was my comment. I have been asking about Sol for a while now. The problem is my subscription might end before the trip to Melodia ends. It will be insane to stop at a clif and then to wait two months just to read what happens next. Hahaha.

Marvin Rodriguez

I disagree. From the beginning Percy has hated the current system in Remior. This viewpoint was only strengthened with the early demise of his parents. It is completely logical that an orphan that was scorned and ostracized by his remaining living relatives, after the death of his parents, does not want to have children go through a similar circumstance. Also keep in mind that Percy used to hate his family, he only really cared for Elaine and her immediate family. Throughout the story this has also changed, Percy is now more family oriented than ever before. So no, I don't think this is an idiotic statement coming from Percy.

Shiloh Gallaher

I feel like percy is being short sighted with wanting to wait for children. He has a clan and even if he cant rase the kid derectly there are plenty of people who could its bot like the kid will be abandoned. Also percy must realize that he NEEDS to have kids.

Rodmin

I would love for Percy to get children, the sooner the better so we can see them when they are grown up! I love that Percy had a big family and is part of such a clan and other characters like this aunt Isolde, Galahad that favorite cousin etc appearing! It's rare that a mc has a big family.

Karait

Something like the zelosian beads if they werent dead
