Machaon’s features would have twisted into a grimace if they weren’t locked in the shape of a single, even uglier expression. The regrown skin was fused with non-functioning facial muscles into a thin, scarred sheet of flesh that tightly hugged his skull.

His lips were missing, revealing rows of brand-new teeth that were permanently clenched into a frustrated grin. His hair and eyebrows had never grown back – nor were they going to, according to the healers – and even the cartilage of his nose had been replaced by a flat slab of skin that surrounded a pair of narrow slits.

The life mages that Machaon and his allies controlled had managed to regrow his missing limbs and recover their functionality, but they had lacked the delicate touch necessary to restore the patriarch’s handsome appearance. Unfortunately, the most skilled healers on Remior – the ones that Machaon might have hired under other circumstances – currently stood against him.

Unable to stare at his malformed reflection any longer, he struck the mirror with a violent burst of willpower, shattering it into sand and whipping up a dusty storm within his claustrophobic chamber.

Machaon had only ever used his immaculate appearance as a tool to further his ends. Such concerns were no longer relevant – only raw power was – though he’d be lying if he said that he didn’t find his monstrous visage unsettling.

‘As long as it doesn’t affect my strength, it doesn’t matter,’ he tried to convince himself amidst a coughing fit. ‘My ascension to divinity will fix my body anyway.’

Being confined to this rotting castle was arguably a bigger issue than his incomplete healing. Cracked, mouldy walls stretched everywhere around him, with tangled sheets of ancient cobwebs hanging loosely from the ceiling wherever he looked. Every step he took left a deep bootprint in the thick layer of dust that coated every square centimetre of the dilapidated building.

The servants had been busy trying to clean the castle, but the structure was far too vast to be tidied up within a month. Machaon wanted nothing more than to venture outside for some fresh air – it was the least that he deserved after the numerous agonizing procedures that he’d had to endure during the reconstruction of his body.

But he couldn’t. It wasn’t safe.

It had been thousands of years since anyone had dared to tell Machaon where he could or couldn’t go. Sadly, the Red-born had already proven himself capable of besting even a White-cored mage in single combat, so Machaon and his peers couldn’t afford to give the boy a chance to pick them off one by one.

The only way to protect themselves from a potential assassination attempt was to remain close to one another. Of all the properties that the three Great Houses jointly owned, the castle located near the north-western shore of the continent was by far the largest one. It was capable of housing over fifteen thousand mages.

The Divine Root had relocated to newer, more conveniently placed structures millennia ago, causing the sprawling structure to fall into disrepair, but it was currently the only place that could accommodate the entire alliance.

‘All of this is temporary. We just have to master the external part of the boosting art and squash that irritating fly.’

Percy was undoubtedly working hard to elevate his strength at this very moment, but Machaon was confident that he and his colleagues would outgrow the young upstart this time.

Nobody understood how the boy had managed to advance all the way from Red to Green in less than half a century, and there was no denying how impressive it was that the young noble had bridged the enormous gap separating his actual grade from the fighting strength of a White.

Still, there had to be a limit to the Red-born’s growth. Percy would have to stack multiple incremental boosts to keep up with Machaon’s looming spell upgrade. Even if the boy found a way to make up for the jump from Circulation to the Dance, the three patriarchs would just have to combine their strength to execute him.

More worrying than Percy’s personal growth was that of his coalition.

Those who had received the Red-born’s many gifts had remained tight-lipped about the most sensitive details, but some information had still leaked, despite the strict spectral contracts that the boy had imposed on his allies. This wasn’t an accident, nor a miscalculation on House Avalon’s part.

Archibald and his grandson had deliberately allowed word about the new cores, mindsets, mutations, and affinity-changing treasures to spread, because they needed to entice more noble families into joining them.

And it had worked like a charm.

Based on what House Asclepius’ informants had managed to piece together, at least three additional families had recently reached out to House Avalon and the Alchemists’ Guild, commencing a round of negotiations.

‘We can’t let that continue, or our personal strength will soon cease to matter,’ Machaon reminded himself.

At the rate things were progressing, the Red-born’s alliance would double in size within the next few months, quadruple by the end of the year, and expand to the rest of the planet before the decade was over.

Machaon and his fellow patriarchs would need much longer than that to complete the new spell, so it was imperative that they nipped the growing problem in the bud before it completely foiled all their plans.

But how could they prevent the lesser families from lusting over the genuine power that Percy promised them?

Well… Machaon, Theseus and Morpheus had already debated this topic and concluded that there was only one solution. Three Great Houses already stood against the Red-born, while only House Etna had openly joined him. But there were three more such families that had yet to pick a side.

That had to change – they had to convince the remaining Great Houses that Percy was more trouble than he was worth, and they had to do it before the boy’s coalition grew too powerful to care.

***

Phoebe walked along hills of freshly solidified stone, her crisp footsteps echoing across glistening sheets of obsidian. A couple of months ago, this place had been a flourishing grassland filled with life. Today, the transformed landscape was just a reminder of the cataclysmic battle that had been fought by figures approaching the pinnacle of the Colour realm.

She sighed.

The whole world probably thought of her as a monster. Neither Machaon nor Percy had bothered to keep their dealings with her secret, nor did they need to. It should be obvious to anyone with a functioning brain that the disgraced patriarch only drew breath because she had allowed it, and that the massive war that had engulfed the continent had been endorsed by her.

She had already made peace with that a long time ago, since none of this was new.

It was usually smaller families massacring one another over territory and petty grudges. The Great Houses rarely got directly involved, and the nobles never joined forces to form massive alliances with shared goals, but the mortals had murdered each other since before her rise to power.

She could have stopped it, of course, but she hadn’t.

It was a necessary evil. It was easy to spew rhetoric about how strife and conflict allowed stronger mortals and bloodlines to emerge, but Phoebe had personally seen it happen time after time.

Nobles kidnapped and raped one another to create more powerful strains of their bloodlines. Their weakest descendants inevitably fell into the crucible of war sooner and more frequently, leaving the mightiest ones behind to pass their lineage on and strengthen their families with every generation. The progenitors of House Avalon had probably started the same way, producing one of Remior’s most potent bloodlines and, eventually, Percy himself.

Phoebe was willing to let the continent drown in blood, and all the noble Houses crumble into dust if that was what it took to temper her favourite mortal into Remior’s greatest champion. Her only fear was that Percy might die in the process, but that was a risk that she had accepted.

The young man was resourceful and hardworking enough to keep growing even if she left him alone, but it was debatable whether he would have achieved the things that he had without the added pressure.

Would he have managed to hold his own against Deimos if he hadn’t spent months honing his skills against an army of bounty hunters? Would he have produced his Extreme spell if Hermes’ son hadn’t killed his familiar?

Would the Starry Queen have captured him if he hadn’t fallen unconscious near the base of the Fungal Spire? Would he have possessed the means to shove the disembodied deity’s soul inside a royal egg?

At the very least, Percy certainly wouldn’t have obtained even half the rewards that he had earned during his most recent trips to Thess’kala, the Vault of Magic, and the void tournament if not for his fusion with Micky.

Perhaps, his efforts would have still yielded acceptable results in due time – in a couple of centuries or millennia – but it was clear to Phoebe that allowing the Great Houses to go after him was by far the fastest way to maximize his potential.

The most recent battle was further proof that her gamble was paying off.

Everyone else had focused on the outcome of the fight – or what it meant for the future. That Machaon had been injured. That Archibald had been forced to relocate his family to the Fungal Spire. That Percy was working tirelessly to expand his coalition. That the Great Houses were trying to figure out the rest of the boosting art.

Phoebe, on the other hand, was more concerned about something else.

Reaching her destination, she stopped at the edge of the enormous chasm that the two armies had carved into the ground with their domains. The sea of lava that Machaon’s spells had created had cooled and solidified weeks ago, yet the grey ice beneath Phoebe’s feet had yet to thaw completely. Reaching down, she picked up a crystalline shard small enough to fit in her grasp, noting how cold it still felt.

Others might not think much of it, but that was because they didn’t understand the implications. They were shocked that Percy could hold his own against the patriarch of a Great House, yet Phoebe could clearly see that the source of the two mages’ strength was fundamentally different.

Despite Percy’s intricate spells and wide assortment of tricks, his mana was three grades lower than Machaon’s. The grey ice also happened to be the result of affinity fusion between a rare and a composite element – an inherently unstable combination.

Regardless of Percy’s strength, the crystalline patch shouldn’t have persisted nearly this long. Phoebe had been surprised when the boy’s mana had survived for multiple weeks after his battle with Deimos, yet the magical ice appeared to have lasted even longer this time.

Given Percy’s recent growth, Phoebe no longer harboured any doubt that he would eventually grow into a paragon, and even a powerful deity. However, a piece of unstable Green mana remaining frozen for over a month was an indication of something else entirely: the boy’s magic was beginning to passively impose itself upon the world, rejecting the very laws of existence.

The corner of her lips curled up slightly.

Whatever that means…

Grish99

Some nascent decree? My boi Percy about to become titan before even ascending to godhood?

ThaFly

and she doesn't even know about the Saphire pavilion trip...

Tim

Sounds like it. He might start meeting some requirement for it.

LionRye

That is divinity stuff right? Like denying physics, that's a similar concept to decrees right?

Talen Drake

Titan sign at Green. Nothing to see here. Move along.

retrorocket0

i am thinking it might actually be a nascent concept of permanance. Hence why the ice isn't falling apart.

LionRye

I hadn't even thought of that.

Xorvivs

Maybe a concept. His understanding of the concept of permeance? He'll need to understand it before leaving color realm.

Thedevilsdemon

What if this are the elemental law's? If i remeber correctly he can mix ice with soul and for soul he has had the ring. The affix from the ring should match one of the 3 ice sub-typs, or not?

Nuclear

Hope next ch explains more

Eshmatarel

My bet is Percy’s decree will make more mana compositions “natural”, lowkey like the decree Ishkuria told him about, that’s allows mortals to have a three element core, but with rare and composite affinities as well. I think I commented that on RR ages ago, but now I’m adding that he’ll get mind, life, and soul cores - the affinities needed for core-affecting decrees, and been forshadowed; he’s been looking for a mind mage he can trust + Nepthys ascended with mind , plus now there’s a question of how his mutated bloodline will work with the life affinity

Tim

The "rejecting the very laws of existence." sounds more like a decree which were described as craving themselves permanently into reality. Now that I think about it the blessing of permanence might be really good for decree making.

retrorocket0

i hypothesized months ago that what separates decrees from regular spells is incorporating a concept into a spell. I still think that is the case and if this is a concept than i would say it is even more evidence for my theory.

God

Unbeknownst to her, Percy already got his getback agains her. I can’t wait to see her reaction once Percy tells her the greatest factions of the universe are after Remoir.

Tim

I guess that is what you get for pushing so far.

ZaA

Might not be a decree but something that passively happens during godhood, too. Or, like Xorvivs said, a concept that's working its way toward being conpleted/attained. Id be willing to bet it's actually Permanence

Kaladin

So he's mastering permanence from the ring of sacrifice. Phoebe is definitely a gambler and I'm not sure there's any major faction that would allow so much risk to a golden goose. It's true though that the crucible is forging him into something special. I wonder when she found out he overcame being red born and had enough lifespan to become a God.

Rooooaaaaaarrrrr

Godhood is near. Now I wander that there’s stages to create a internal world, or mana becoming potent enough is the only way. It does explain liquid mana, as that is really condensed mana. I can’t wait to read more about the gods and green borns said of things.

Tomer Yud

holy crap. thats interesting

Pekka Kohonen

I think all of this is working towards his Inner World becoming a new Universe.

Jose Cordones

So they are already in the process to understand a concept pretty much.

Rodmin

So you don't think he'll keep one pure core?

Derze

Honestly, I’m surprised he hasn’t just “yo, I got the Void’s Hand decree, help me”. Phoebe would have to at least know or point towards a solution

Tim

He will be able to fight a clear mage (white with dance) before he even gets a 3rd core and gnome focus. Which should push him close to another grade higher. He definitely has to look for opponents outside remior then unless they are nice enough to come to him.

Tim

Finally Macheons outside matches his inside, some kind of ghoulish Lord Voldemort.

MinE

I assume that’s just divine level magic in general.

ItsBeru

Honestly I was leaning more towards something to do with his supercharged domain but yours makes more sense

R. Maxwell Steele

For a long time they have been hinting that he will go for mind/life/soul. But recently they have hinted that finding the missing pure concepts are the path to creating a fully stable inner world... which means there's no expiration date on his reign as a God. And also likely means his inner world will grow faster than others.

Meh

I like the story but this just really annoys me. It seems that Phoebe and the gods are considering everything about Percy, his usefulness and his growth but ... she's not even considering he might leave or give up their world to another coalition? I mean. If my family is being slaughtered after I helped and continue and will continue to help elevate the entire world, with the strongest willingly allowing it to happen, I'd find a way to sign a contract with someone like the auction hall faction, have them take over and just work for them till I'm strong enough. They'd at least protect my family at least a little

C-Anonymous

Who or what does Phoebe consider to be "Remior"? She oversees what is essentially a genocidal eugenics program on a global scale and justifies it by saying she is doing it for Remior? All the dead bodies would suggest she can't possibly mean she is doing it for the PEOPLE of Remior, so who or what is "Remior" in her mind?

Tim

The only reason to leave would be to spite phoebe, which would be fair i guess. But he could just as well take over as phoebe even said she will let him do that once he is strong enough. I also think phoebe has evaluated percy enough to know he won't leave. Calling a faction over to take over, even if they have good intentions which is like very unlikely. Would result in way more deaths, especially if the gods retaliate against them or percy. They are also not currently able to leave on their own and at the point they could all problems would be solved anyway. After the war percy family will be uncontested, compared to other mortal factions and others will be bound by contract.

Tim

The survivors i guess, she thinks the only other option is extinction. So she is talking about survival as a species, even if their lifes suck most of the time. Not that they couldn't implement a better solution, they are just a backwater lesser spring that already wasted another generation of green borns. So they are probably sticking to what worked in the past. Atleast in the past there where some sanctioned area like the alchemist guild or twilight city were war didn't spread to. After this war they will have to rethink, they will probably have to fight outsiders instead of insiders.

Elton

His internal world will be icy

Lionheart

Nah she has to. She doesn’t know where Percy got the tokens but she knows about the affinity boosting treasures

MinE

With this, I’m hoping his first Decree will let people have unsable fusions as affinities preferably Phantom mana. P.s. I hope he figures out how to add Pure to the Soul Freezing Ice.

MinE

Given Greater Springs can one shot Reimors entire Pantheon, yah I agree with her. P.s. She really should intervene if Percy is any danger. I get it breaks his immersion and her deal with budget skelator, but just spare the idiot and let him die during missions or from old age b/c I doubt the guy actually understands how difficult becoming a god is.

NerveNo17

I get the explanation of why the gods allow this war and all that, but the idea that the other great houses will join Machaon now would be irrational. If they join Percy they get a second core, access to a mutation and now a steady stream of affinity treasures (that are impossible to get otherwise)... if they join Machaon they get what? Nothing, if they win they get nothing except maybe knowing that they screwed the planet. Doesn't make sense

MinE

Given those healers managed to apparently fix his limbs properly at least enough for them to be mostly functional, I’m guessing they just didn’t bother with his face out of spite or just not caring about it.

Shiloh Gallaher

Multiple incremental boosts... heh Wise Gnome Focus goes berrrrrrrr

Jachin Nelson

Remember that Phoebe while being a Titan is a fairly weak god, having only mastered Mind, and water affinities. Percy should he Ascend as he is should have a good comprehension of Soul, Air, Water, Ice, Pure, and Beast. Not including any of the Nythses (can't spell her name). He has also proven that he can punch up a good bit and as long as he takes the time (or at least what time he can) that should continue to be the case. Barring any other tricks he'll pick up from across the universe he may very well be able to beat Phoebe shortly after becoming a god. Additionally from how Phoebe was talking in the chapter and going back through the earlier chapters, Decrees' take two things to make, enough mana to effect a world and being self sustaining. I imagine that the self sustaining bit comes from understanding more the sheer power. Which leads into the fact that Percy's understanding of Soul Freezing Ice might be approaching the point of being self sustaining.

Jachin Nelson

Percy can't activate the Decree without cutting off his chance at godhood

Jachin Nelson

Personally i think that the missing Pure concept is what Beast Mana emerges as. It's been said that Beast and Pure mana are opposites but what if they are simply inversions of eachother

Philippe Ad Astra

@Rodmin: he could put the mind core as the third core for the waps, and the life core in Micky. He already share the soul with Micky so Percy has full access of all the cores of Micky. He would still need to find a way to fusion or have full access of the wasp cores though.

Jachin Nelson

Hey. So I've been doing some thinking. Remior has had three Titans according to Archibald in like book 2. There affinities are Life, Time, and Mind. But we know until the Aurora Dew that only Green borns could become gods. Greenborns being like 1 in 10k-100k in terms of birth. But most Greenborns get stuck at Demigod, and Rare Affinities make up 1% of people. So. My question is, is it easier for Titans to emerge from Rare Affinities then it is for the base elements? With all three of Remior's titans having had rare affinities and them making up a tiny fraction of the greenborns, and an even smaller fraction of the green borns that would make it to god hood it seems likely. We don't know the affinities of the other Titans Percy has gotten decrees from (Minus Metatron). So i don't have any more information that I can remember on this. Thoughts?

Tim

Pretty sure she has air too and is trying to learn earth.

Derze

hence the need to talk to Phoebe? If she is at least aware they could work towards either fixing the decree or getting info on other lifespan stuff. and if she doesnt know any other source of additional lifespan at least its known he has it

Karait

Soul but yes

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

Every machaon related thing is such a huge stain on this novel. It's just too dumb to go against percy. Dude already figured out how to make red borns gods. In less then 100 years. Becoming a proper great spring is a 10k+ year process. 100k+ even And in 1/1000 of that, they have already surpassed every other greater spring in the universe because of him. The fact that there is more then one person at Machaon's level of stupidity is already beyound dumb. The only logical reason, is a cardinal devil infected him and the other two dumbasses. But the other houses should have joined already.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

Deity already uses concepts in their spells. At least I think so. A decree should be a supercharged version of that. If Deity fights only by using MOAR mana given by their world, it's kinda disappinting.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

Phoebe took way too many risk without actually checking his personality, while she knew nothing about him. This whole principle is such a major stain on a good novel. Holy fuck, it's like a pile of shit everywhere. Nearly as bad as Moshuko Tensei's weird stuff. It's just too many people acting against their own interests. A story of 60iq characters isn't interesting.
