Tonett greeted Sol outside a large building by the centre of the city, accompanied by a couple of Yellow attendants. Percy guessed that it was some kind of mayoral office, though he couldn’t help but wonder why Sol didn’t have one if she was also a city leader. Or maybe she did, and she just preferred sending out her signals from within the privacy of her home.

In any case, the Green-born didn’t bother inviting Sol inside to have a seat. Either the very concept of hospitality went over the brutish woman’s head entirely, or the younger mage had done something to annoy her. Percy guessed that it was a little bit of both.

Tonett was taller and burlier than most male Melodians that Percy had seen, standing a full head above his host. She wore a similar uniform to Sol’s – only with even more badges and decorative pins, which Tonett had undoubtedly accumulated over centuries of service. Her shirt was a few sizes too small, the buttons looking like they were about to pop as the bottom edge of the overstretched fabric stopped above her navel, revealing a bulging set of abs.

The soul affinity typically wasn’t very compatible with physical combat – not unless fused to another element to gain substance – but the Green-born woman had obviously been strong enough to pummel Red and Orange beasts to death with her bare fists even before her promotion. Judging from the many scars marring her obsidian knuckles, she had slaughtered countless weaker creatures in her long life, and Percy wouldn’t be surprised if she had graduated to Yellow beasts after reaching Blue.

‘She has the Brawling trait, making her supernaturally gifted in all forms of hand-to-hand combat,’ Sol explained through their connection. ‘It’s not too useful when it comes to dangerous beasts, but you’d be surprised by how much mana it can save her when surrounded by a pack of smaller creatures.’

Percy nodded, recalling how seriously these people took their traits. Even those who ended up with useless abilities made it their life’s mission to take advantage of their gift.

‘Brawling might be a good match for me or Archibald,’ Micky speculated.

‘I think you’ll be better off with a proper weapon once we figure out how to make you one,’ Percy disagreed. ‘But you’re not wrong about Grandpa – this trait might synergize well with his clones. Unfortunately, he’ll only have one shot at getting it in the near future, since I’d rather wait a few years before asking Zoris to give anyone else the blessing.’

Oblivious to the soundless conversation taking place inside Sol’s head, Tonett regarded the younger woman sternly. The Blue’s furrowed eyebrows, coupled with her shaved scalp gave her a rather intimidating appearance.

“Sol. How many times do I need to tell you not to travel between cities on your own? You have envoys to send or guards to accompany you for that. I know you’re strong enough to handle the wildlife with ease on most days, but your life is too important to be taking unnecessary risks.”

“I’m not on my own, and this was urgent,” Percy’s host replied.

“Is your fiend buddy back?” the larger woman asked, putting two and two together.

‘Not this again!’ Percy grimaced inwards, struggling to keep himself from swearing.

“He’s here,” Sol confirmed. “I think that you should start by giving him the ring back and apologizing for taking it.”

A humourless smile formed on Tonett’s lips as she rubbed the grey ring on her clenched right hand with her left. Even now, she had her boosting art active, constantly circulating augmented mana through her core. At least she wasn’t wasting everyone’s time – Percy had to give her that.

“That won’t be possible,” she said. “You know how important the blessing is for us. We have dozens of children falling sick every day. My next trait might help us cleanse the lake a moment sooner.”

“It’s not like Percy was planning to grab the ring and abandon us!” Sol protested. “He’s brought elixirs for the rest of our Green-borns. An extra forty Blues will help us a lot more than a single Blue acquiring another spectral trait or two!”

“Of course,” Tonett admitted, before shaking her head. “Unfortunately, our Greens will need a couple of years to take advantage of the resources. Our cities will suffer irreparable damage by then. We’ll have to attempt the mission a lot sooner, even if my new trait proves useless.”

“You don’t have to worry about that,” Percy interjected. He’d been this close to exploding at the Blue, but the mention of sick children had caused him to deflate. “I have other ways to help you take the lake immediately.”

Tonett raised an eyebrow, probably realizing who had spoken. “Percy, was it? Let me start by thanking you for everything that you have done for our people. I understand that none of us would be alive today if not for you. I’m sorry that we took your ring without involving you in the decision, but you weren’t here, and I cannot return it at this moment.”

Percy didn’t appreciate the woman’s response one bit. Forcing himself to remain calm, he tried to exhaust every civilized option before doing anything that he might regret. “Why not?”

“Because I’ll die if I do. If what you said about the lake and the elixirs is true, I’ll be happy to return the artifact as soon as I’m done with it, even though most of our Green-borns haven’t had a chance to use it yet. The problem is that I’ve already absorbed my second trait, so I need to finish internalizing the blessing.”

Percy was tempted to tell her that this wasn’t his problem. He could empathize with her eagerness to acquire a new trait, but she should have waited for the blessing to become permanent before absorbing a fiend, just like Percy himself had done. Fortunately for the foolish woman, he wasn’t cruel enough to demand her death.

“How much longer?” he asked.

“A few months.”

Percy frowned. The timeframe was acceptable, since he was planning to stay on Melodia longer than that. The issue was that he didn’t trust the Green-born not to hide the ring or try to cheat him in some other way.

“Well… Tonett… I hope you enjoy Sol’s company, because you aren’t leaving my sight while that ring is on your finger. I’ll also need your Green-borns to sign a spectral contract before they get their hands on my elixirs. I was originally planning to give you the resources for free, but it looks like gratitude and mutual respect won’t be enough for a smooth collaboration.”

The Blue’s features contorted in anger. “A little rude, don’t you think?! The ring was discovered by our expedition, on our planet. I won’t deny that you were an extremely important member of that expedition, but letting you keep the ring after we’re done with it is gratitude enough. And let’s not pretend that you’re getting nothing else out of this.”

Percy snorted. “First of all, the ring doesn’t belong to anybody. There’s a god inside it – over a thousand times older than both of us combined. Zoris only ever offered to stick by my side until I figure out a way to give him a new body – he doesn’t want to be passed along from one greedy finger to another. Secondly, you’re right that I’m also benefitting from your people, but my terms are more than reasonable. If you don’t think so, just put it to a vote. I bet that most of your Green-borns will jump at the opportunities that I’m offering you.”

“Most of our Green-borns aren’t Blues, nor city lords,” Tonett insisted, a vein throbbing on her forehead. “This isn’t their call.”

Percy couldn’t help but scoff at the woman’s shamelessness. She actually had the gall to use the higher grade and status that she had only obtained because of his elixirs to win the argument.

“No, but Sol and Doh are, so you’re outnumbered by your peers as well,” he corrected her, not willing to back down. “Now, do you want to keep butting horns with me to preserve your dumb pride, or do you actually give a shit that your people don’t have clean drinking water?”

The stubborn woman clenched her fists until they released faint popping sounds. She tried to pressure Sol and him with her domain, but Percy had seen the go-to move of every arrogant Blue in the universe coming from a kilometre away, blocking Tonett’s willpower with a wave of his own.

With the dispute on the verge of devolving to violence, Percy would have expected the Green-born’s attendants to take their leader’s side. Instead, the poor Yellows awkwardly took a few steps back, clearly unwilling to get involved in a disagreement between city lords.

Tonett spent a couple of minutes glaring at Percy, trying to get him to water down some of his harshest terms, before eventually realizing that it wasn’t going to happen.

“Fine. Have it your way.” Clicking her tongue, the Blue shot her cowardly subordinates an admonishing glance. “Pitch. Timbre. Send word to Doh’s city, telling him that Sol’s fiend is going to help us clear the lake out. Ask him to have his strongest mages rest well within the next couple of days, and prepare as much manpower as he can spare by the third.”

Turning back to Sol, she gave her and Percy a complicated look. “I hope that you can deliver on your promise, and that offering to help with the lake wasn’t just a cheap bargaining tactic. If we fail to eliminate the creatures hiding in the water and our mages end up flanked from both sides of the barrier, we’ll have much bigger problems to worry about than polluted water.”

Goes without saying I already don’t like her, and I think her subordinates agree🫩

Dé ku

"since I’d rather wait a few years before asking Zoris to give anyone else the blessing."🤣🤣 He seems to realize how selfish his behavior is.

God

I hope she dies. Also, he needs to get her under a soul contract. She will cause a ton of political problems for him if he doesn’t.

God

I still don’t understand why she of all people was given the elixirs.

Dragonkinn

Omg he's not pushing for a bound oath. He cannot be more stupid. A simple "hand over the ring the same day that Tonnett recieves the boon and cannot attempt or orchestrate Sol's Denise". Gone full stupid all of a sudden

MinE

She was/is apparently a major leader, one well respected or at least established enough Sol doesn’t outright hate or dislike her.

Zimidiaz

She's directly related to Latt, the one who Percy originally gave the elixirs to. I imagine in her mind, that's more than enough reason for her to get priority

MinE

Yah, doesn’t help she’s trying to intimidate someone with an ability he gave her. P.S. Trying to intimidate Percy with an Empowered Domain is hilarious.

Tomer Yud

because she's a strong leader of their people

MinE

Only thing more ironic is trying to use Ea's Gift to spy on Ea.

Dé ku

Damn, this is starting to bother me. Why is he acting like this? He still seems like an immature child, even after everything he's been through.

LionRye

Thank you for the chapter, very cool. I do like that despite her stubbornness Tonett genuinely cares for her people. As in of course she tried to push for better conditions, her home is on the line.

Dé ku

Exactly, and she didn't do anything wrong.

MinE

He's rather Young for a Yellow, I think biologically he's still 17-20.

Dé ku

This does not justify his acting in such a selfish and ridiculous manner.

Luke Billings

I think it can only be seen as selfish if you still think of Zoris as a tool to be passed around on a whim, see Percy as a Fiend that is to be taken advantage of as just another thing to be controlled and pacified (as all their traits are), and barely acknowledge Percys assistance while in the same sentence demanding it continue as if it is their right. Percy has his own goals for being there, he's always made that clear, they are taking advantage of his benevolence and perceived naivety. He is simply not allowing them to dictate the terms.

Cobadulu

Yeah, and percy has actually mentioning that he'll use the contract for the other green born.

Dé ku

You are mistaken. Firstly, the selfish behavior I am referring to is his anger and reaction when he has no right to be angry. After the three received the blessing and he did not return to take the ring, what is the problem or mistake in giving it to a fourth person until he returns and takes the ring? Doesn't his delay in returning make this part of his responsibility? So why is he angry now and acting like this? Secondly, why should her Green Generators sign a Spectral Contract to obtain the elixirs? This creates factions against factions, thus causing division among them. Isn't this childish? And why? Is it because she took the ring, or because she refused to return it? It's illogical for him to take it now, when she hasn't yet received the blessing, especially since he plans to stay on the planet for a long time. Wouldn't it be easier to simply not give them the elixirs instead of imposing contracts? It's like saying, "Take my gift by force and be grateful to me," which is ridiculous, especially since no one has asked him for anything. As for considering Zoris as a tool to be passed around on a whim,he plans to give the baldy the blessing as well. So tell me, how is this different from what is happening here? Finally, don't forget that she apologized to him for not asking his permission, and that she promised to return it when she was finished with it, everything after that was just his own suspicions and doubts.

Tim

The original problem was zoris didn't want to be used in that manner. Even if percy took longer than expected that doesn't change anything in that regard, the og deal was take me back to the mirror lake. So in case percy never returned they should have done that instead. I also think percy is just too used to deal with entitled high / green borns and went of on her a little too fast, the impression i got from her so far is that she definitely likes to push people around a bit. But if that is malicious or not remains to be seen. Smart thing to do would have been to talk to the others first to inspect her character a bit. She is latts great great aunt or whatever. "Take my gift by force, and be grateful" idk what that is supposed to mean if they don't want the contract they don't get elixirs. So they are not being forced, if they can choose not to take the contract. He also says "your" greenborns so probably just a agreement to not attack him or sol or take any hostages. I don't think he would ask for loyalty or do it to greenborns that are under sols command. For the last part it's definitely selfish, but percy also gives zoris the opportunity to study his bloodline or might even look into restoring bodys himself. So there is atleast a trade there, not the same as being used with no benefit to him.

\Vélios_Shadow\

Well no, he has every right to be angry. I think that anyone creating a weapon for someone and then being threatened by this person with the weapon you've given them would be really angered. Even more when this person is literally treating you and your friend as object. The problem with the melodian giving the ring to a fourth person is literally that he asked them not to do it and that he entrusted them with it. The fact that the ring is literally a being with it's own consciousness make it even more despicable because it's like saying "What's the problem with using this person that can't even defend itself while is "guardian" entrusted him to us" Why should her green sign a spectral contract to obtain the elixir? Well Maybe because you don't help someone by giving them the only way for becoming more powerful without at least a way to be sure that they do not backstab you. So no it's literally the total opposite of being childish. They can't not take the elixir because it's their only way to survive and prosper and Percy has to give it to them if he want to help is friends and their people but he can not blindly trust all of their people because it would be childish and naive to do. So it's not "Take my gift by force and be grateful to me" but "I've already helped you for free and now if you want more of my help we need to find a way to trust eachother (by signing a contract)" Yes he want to give it to baldy but he was going to ask zoris not just use him. It's the reason he said he would have to wait before asking him because of what just happened. So while Tonnett is not entirely at fault either because she doing it for her people she as been extremely rude with him from the start she doesn't even consider him as someone but as something that she can use. And Percy clearly as it's own fault too and he could have been a lot more gentle with the situation but he do have reasons to be angry and on edge if you consider his situation.

Joyeus

Does Sol gain access to the penitent decree? I don’t remember if it stated if he could use the decree when possessing someone or not. It would be interesting to see what a group of purely soul affinity users would make about the spiritual blood. And really she learns there is a stage beyond green ten years ago and she is already using its benefits to intimidate THE GUY THAT GAVE IT HER. Also how does she think the fact that the other green borns will need a few years to clean their cores would be an argument for keeping the ring? The ring takes just as long to give a single person a concept!

retrorocket0

Also is her domain any stronger than his right now? She is only blue right? I got the idea that his was a s strong as a blue now? Or is hers stronger cause of having the dance?

Dé ku

That's what I meant; he shouldn't mention the elixirs or give them any until he receives the ring. As for your claim that he didn't force them and that those who didn't want to sign the contract wouldn't get the elixirs, that's just an excuse. He's exploiting their predicament, so he knows perfectly well that they really don't have any other choice. Therefore, whatever the terms of the contract, they will be in his favor and of no benefit to them, because they have no other choice. I say, if he fears that one of them might betray him or pose a threat, he should simply not give them any elixirs. His goal is only the Lake of Mirrors, isn't it? Now that he has identified the planet and can visit it whenever he wants, he should leave them to their fate instead of dominating them and forcing deadly contracts upon them. In my opinion, if you think about it this way, you'll see that what he's doing now is meaningless. No one has obligated him to help them, nor have they asked him to; he is the one doing them a favor. Then he comes back and forces them into contracts or expects them to submit to him completely and crushes any attempt at disobedience, even if it's just a suspicion. He said it himself; that, unlike Gallimus, he could mold them as he pleased, and that is indeed what he began to do with them. If this is not tyranny and selfishness, then what is it? Finally, They asked for the ring, and Zoris eventually agreed. This is exactly what Percy will do in the future to obtain a blessing for his grandfather. There is nothing wrong here; he acted more than necessary, and his statement that he will wait several years is sufficient proof of all this.

Fleetpanda

Yeah that confused me. It’s a pretty simple oath and it tosses out any conflict in the future

Tim

Thanks for clarifying the forced contract part because i really didn't understood what you meant in the earlier comment. While i do agree there is definitely a dangerous line here that should not be crossed with percys long term intentions. And percy should not think of the World as clay. I do think saying the ring agrees now and anything that was discussed before doesn't matter in that regard feels a bit dishonest. Like it was clear the "agreement" wasn't a completely free decision. Regardless of if they honour the new agreement or make a complete new one now that percy is back. So trying to get him back, via a non violent solution is not bad on papier. But i could see how this gives him a bit to much leverage, with the method he used. If you see it as an transaction ring for elixirs, without taking their predicament into account it would have made more sense. Well we will have to see where the author takes it from here, while i do see the danger you see i think percy definitely rushed thinks a bit too much and should have discussed it with the others, i don't think he has some deep plans on dominating their world as his one sentence implied. Honestly it seems to me more like fumbling politics and the women turns out to be nice later and there will be some lesson for percy or something like that. Following that he definitely needs some proper terms, how their cooperation should take place in the future. If they want to stay as their own Nation or world i guess.

Tim

Slightly, probably not as much as from an advancement. With 2 coree and 4 versions of the dance nesha had a blue domain. Could mean tonetts domain is atleast 25% stronger. But green to blue might scale different since she didn't have a domain before.

Dé ku

Don't forget that this point was already raised with him. Doh explained that he could not justify receiving the blessing and could not guarantee that the other Green-borns would not demand the ring, so they refused the blessing from the beginning. He should at least have understood that, and not acted like that.

MinE

It was mentioned Percy’s Clone only had a Domain as strong as a Blue, so Tonnet’s should be roughly 3 times as strong.

MinE

He can use it while possessing someone, but I don't think its contagious.

MinE

Its his Spiritual Blood, and it only has access to his spectral traits.

Iyad Al-Najjar

If I am not mistaken, he can send it through a maintained cord.

Joyeus

I mean can the clone generate more spiritual blood using their host body or can the host access the decree whilst he is possessing them. Theirs a limit to how much spiritual blood can be maintained by one body and Mickey’s the only one that can send it through the cord since his blood is completely made of mana. The decree bonds to his soul so it can be carried by a clone, that’s why he chose it in the first place. So can Sol use it or can the clone use it in Sols body? And if so will it count towards the limit of spiritual blood Percy and Micky can produce or will it count as its own separate supply?
