This week on MSB: Victory episode 17 breaks new ground and goes where no Gundam show has dared to go before: making a recap episode (unless you count Prelude to ZZ). Even so, this episode gives us our first glimpse at the Zanscare homeland and its famous queen, so there's still a surprising amount to talk about! Please listen to it!

Unfortunately, due to last minute cancellation by our scheduled guest, we didn't have time to prepare a research piece this week.

I'm so used to the concept of the recap episode that its surprising to realize this is only the second such episode in Gundam history to this point, and the first to occur midway through the show's run. Kudos to them for giving us some new interesting content so it wasn't a waste of an episode. The introduction of the concept of battleships combined with motorcycles and the joke about Fonze Kagatie and Duker Iq coming up with them while being high makes me think to the rumor about its inclusion in the show. That by this point Tomino was fed up with his bosses and sponsors and intentionally proposed horrible ideas to them thinking they'd be rejected, only for them to be accepted and actually put in the show. As with much of Gundam and Tomino who knows if any of that is really true or just made up fan speculation.

There's actually a lot of documentation on this - Tomino's talked about the fateful meeting that led to the bike battleships in interviews and in his autobiographical "Cure of Turn A," and I've mentioned to Thom that we can be pretty certain of the identity of the Bandai executive who ordered him to include them. So there's a whole deep-dive that they could get into in some future episode. :-)

Jalekok

This is not purely tied to Maria but again in Family Theory of Gundam, Tomino mentions his use of female characters as symbols of organizations stemming from the reign of Elizabeth I. And this idea of having women at the center of society being a stabilizing element also continues to this day with Himiko Yamato. Since Gaza was mentioned, in the same book from 2011, Tomino also spoke about, in relation to a strong Arab motherhood, the impressive strength of the wives of slain Hamas members.

Given a sufficiently awesome motorcycle, I'm sure the Arti Gibraltar rails could be repurposed into a ramp for an epic space jump. Didn't they did that in a later episode of "Happy Days"?

The idea of women (or at least, the right SORT of women) as a stabilizing/civilizing force in society is also a frequent theme in westerns - clearly it's an idea with some enduring and cross-cultural appeal... - Nina
