This week on MSB: Victory Gundam episode 26.

It's time for everyone's favorite convention: the Ameria Colony Guillotine Fest! Bring the kids on down, it's fun for the whole family! On this episode we discuss what makes a Char, the Uso Cycle and the Big Sister with a Thousand Faces, narrative imperatives, and how we're each of us getting what we want out of Victory (despite some quibbles). Please listen to it!

And don't forget that we'll be on hiatus for the next month. When we come back we'll be doing a Q&A episode, so send your questions and comments to hosts@gundampodcast.com!

Uso's unchanging nature is 100% intentional and core to the themes of the show. Kinda funny how you complained about Seabook being a composite of previous MCs whereas Uso is the opposite. Regarding Uso's ideal personality I can't find the interview but during production one of the staff members told Tomino about a young boy they knew (son's friend?) who hated going to school, but seeing Uso persevering also gave them the motivation to do the same. From reading blogs and following female anime fans on twitter, most if not all of them adults, many fell in love with Uso and thus awakened their shotacon fetish. Mission accomplished (?)

I never thought of katejina as a char but it makes sense. I think the issue with her development is that with other characters they gradually move through the story and change where as katejina jumps from one thing to another like an "erratic woman" stereotype from the 90s

See, I'd find Uso's unchanging nature less awkward if he wasn't constantly being traumatized, freaking out, and then resetting to factory default. He's not presented as someone who's sturdy by nature (like Dieter from Monster). He's just someone the story won't let change.

Arguably the peak episode of the show thus far for me, perfectly timed at the exact halfway point. Tomino absolutely loves the "figurehead with puppet master ruler" type trope, beyond the Gundam examples listed its also a big thing in Heavy Metal L-Gaim and Xabungle. L-Gaim is probably the closest parallel to Victory in that there's also the female figurehead - male puppet master dynamic. Although L-Gaim plays a lot more into the "retired emperor" matter that you talked about during the episode while Victory doesn't really do that.

i guess that's why SRW30 had them team up lol, although the scale of their respective empires were vastly disproportionate compared to how depicted in SRW30

The question about Queen Maria previously only healing individuals in a more intimate setting is right on the money: it's a nod to her and Cronicle's backstory in the novels. So is Cronicle recording her reunion with Shahkti two episodes ago (I don't think he ever actually uses that video though, lol). I was also surprised Cronicle didn't know the public healings exhausted her, but I guess that means he really hadn't witnessed them firsthand until that demonstration. It's frustrating that side material makes the siblings seem like they should be close but in the anime they are quite distant. I'm also shocked that it did seem like Cronicle was willing to kill Maria so that she wouldn't be the League Militaire's hostage. I interpreted that scene as he was so enraged by Üso taking her and irrationally thought he could somehow take out the Victory and rescue Maria simultaneously. I'm not so sure he took pleasure in punching Üso later on rather than it was retribution for all the trouble that kid caused him so far (and maybe a show of dominance to impress Katejina???). He's miserable 95% of the time he's on screen so it's hard to tell. This is a serious problem with most of Victory's antagonists in that they act very foolishly and often out of desperation.
