This week we're talking about Victory Gundam's infamous episode 29 (which depicts Uso being assaulted in a bath by an adult woman) and then Nina's research takes us down a dark path to talk about the Holocaust, its influence on Victory, and the racism in Tomino's depictions of Jewish characters. There's also a new mobile suit, I guess. It's pretty cool. Please listen to it (with discretion)!

Show Notes

Mobile Suit Breakdown is written, recorded, and produced within Lenapehoking, the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Lenape, or Delaware, people. Before European settlers forced them to move west, the Lenape lived in New York City, New Jersey, and portions of New York State, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Lenapehoking is still the homeland of the Lenape diaspora, which includes communities living in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario.

You can learn more about Lenapehoking, the Lenape people, and ongoing efforts to honor the relationship between the land and indigenous peoples by visiting the websites of the Delaware Tribe and the Manhattan-based Lenape Center. Listeners in the Americas and Oceania can learn more about the indigenous people of your area at https://native-land.ca/.We would like to thank The Lenape Center for guiding us in creating this living land acknowledgment.

Oof, the description of this episode is rough

Good listening on the 1 year anniversary of the Gaza holocaust and the Greater Israel project being in full swing

If you want to tie Katejina and her family to the Nazi holocaust then her father is obviously a reference to the Judenräte who sold out their own for safety and financial gain.

This was a phenomenal podcast episode. "Looking forward to" isn't exactly the right way to put it but I was intrigued to hear what you made of the bathtub incident. In a way it's almost like Victory Gundam itself in microcosm. As always the research section was fascinating and this time incredibly moving. There is a sad irony in Tomino taking the wrong lessons from Lustig, as that often seems to happen with Tomino's work as well.

I'd been putting off listening to this one because it gets into some heavy topics and dodgy creative decision-making, but your handling of it was informative, not too overserious, and scrupulously fair. Exhale, whew, thank you! I hope you still feel this V Gundam journey is time well spent, and that you can look forward to some more Haro bubble-blowing and giant bike battleships to lighten the mood.

I did NOT like that bath scene or the 'beating up a kid for fun' part, it's entirely unnecessary and adds absolutely nothing. Sexual assault is bad as is, but on a minor is a whole other level that just isn't acceptable. I doubt it was back then either. I have to add though, that the -other- parts of this episode were very well done. Katejina's face at one point is modelled very nicely and the combat scenes are good.
