There is a new Gundam show airing, which means I am once again pondering the very specific conundrum this podcast has created for me:

In our dynamic duo, I'm the 'noob' - I'm the one coming into each series with no (or at least, fewer) preconceptions, and no prior judgements. Fresh eyes.

At the same time, I've been making a Gundam podcast for more than 6 years! I've made a lot of friends within the Gundam fandom, and, I'm sure you'll be shocked to hear this, Gundam fans LOVE to talk about Gundam. My participation in the fandom is an important part of this job, and has become a really fun part of my daily life, so I can't very well cloister myself just to avoid the possibility of ever seeing a spoiler.

Most of the time, it's easy enough to avoid conversations about older series. They simply aren't talked about as much, and I have a knack for letting my eyes glaze over the moment I see the title of a series we haven't covered yet in someone's social media posts. But new series are a whole different animal! Enough different people are interested in and following a new series that it reaches a kind of saturation, and my eyes-glazing-over trick becomes less effective.

What is someone who is trying to preserve their 'Gundam noob' status to do?

Well, the screenshot says it all! I have confidence that our pace of coverage (let's call it 'ponderous'), and my own unexceptional memory will mean that, by the time Mobile Suit Breakdown actually covers Qquuuuuux (probably more than a decade from now!), I will have forgotten any spoilers I was unable to avoid.

And this is just my opinion, but most truly great stories aren't ruined by knowing what's going to happen.

... but if you spoil things for me on purpose I will block you 😇

Maybe you should pick a series Thom hasn’t watched yet and and he’ll be the noob for the season

Now there's an idea! And could be a fun way to change things up when we've been making the podcast for 10, 15, 20 years 😅

While it may go against the spirit of the podcast, it would be neat for Nina to watch as it airs and give a one shot review of each episode. Then in 30 years look back on that for a more critical review and compare the two opinions.

We sort of tried to do that with Witch from Mercury, but got bogged down with the recording/editing, and once we fell behind the momentum was lost. I'm sure we'll try again on some future series!

Haven't you already confessed to watching Iron-Blooded Orphans and Witch From Mercury?

Jan

Honestly, I would be gassed to see y'all do one shot on the prolouge, because it covers mostly familiar ground and I'm sure you'll have fascinating thoughts without drawing on anything in between. As for being a Gundam Noob, I feel like you've graduated past that when you finished ZZ. Junior Researcher at The Institute for Gundam Studies is the lowest title I'd give you today

I watched the first season of IBO before we started the podcast, and then the first 5 episodes of Witch from Mercury in an attempt to enjoy a new show along with the rest of the fandom as it was coming out (but we tried to kinda podcast about it at the same time and it didn't work out). It's true, there are no hard and fast rules to this - we change things up now and again. But for the most part, I like being the "new to [series]" person.

Nina, I have my own meta-conundrum with the podcast itself! I've finally decided to watch Gundam in release order a couple of months ago (just finished ZZ) when I discovered your wonderful podcast. My daily commute to school, including the 1hr round trip of walking from the parking lot, is about 4 hours, and both of your voices are keeping me company throughout that expedition. However, I'm listening to episodes too damn fast! I already finished your first season within a month of picking up the pod! I see that you're putting the finishing touches on Victory Gundam, but it also feels like that show is right around the corner for me. I fell in love with Gundam, and your deep dives into each episode. I was going to slow my pace considerably to watch 1 episode of Gundam and the pod per week in order to not exhaust your catalogue, but this post inspired me to enjoy both at their own pace! That just means I'll get to double up on Gundam once I catch up to the pod!

I'm so glad you're enjoying the podcast! And now that you've joined the patreon, there's bonus content to help tide you over once you get caught up.
