This week we're pleased to welcome Matteo / Animétudes (https://twitter.com/anime_gaku) back to the podcast to discuss F91's animation and the animators behind it. Whether you're looking for juicy behind the scenes drama or crunchy analysis of how something as simple as the size of the drawing paper can derail a production you'll find them in this episode!

Excellent again! I never want F91 season to end, but I understand if you're all reaching your limit. Loved all the nitty-gritty production talk, and now I'm curious to look at some of these redrawn character bits to see if I can figure out the artists involved. (I wonder if the spacing and proportioning of facial features might be the sort of thing Murase was thinking of when he said the Sunrise animators were having trouble with "the density of the layouts" due to the change in paper format?)

Also enjoyed the chitchat about who was and wasn't a Sunrise employee. My impression - and I'd love to hear more of Matteo's info on this! - is that Sunrise did have a staff of full-time animators, since one of its original lines of business was doing contract animation work for *other* studios, and we know that during First Gundam its animators were splitting their time between that and higher-paying contract work like Ultraman. So I'd assume that, in the credits of things like F91, the animators who aren't specifically labeled as part of an outside studio (like Dove) would be Sunrise staff. For F91 I'd expect that would mostly be Studio 2, based on Murase's claim that "the studio responsible had to do it themselves," but of course the 0083 animators would be emergency reinforcements from Studio 3. Speaking of which, the Japanese WIkipedia page on Sunrise has a detailed breakdown of which studio did which production. Considering how much "City Hunter" came up in this episode, it's interesting to see that was Studio 3 as well: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/サンライズ_(アニメ制作ブランド)#制作作品

Great episode. I've fallen a few episodes behind this season but made sure to listen to this one as soon as I could as I'm really interested in the behind the scenes stuff and recall Matteo providing a lot of great information for Char's Counterattack. Highlight among the staff mentioned for me were Toshimitsu Kobayashi and Shukou Murase. Kobayashi I feel is one of Gundam's most underrated members of the production staff from this era; he was for me the best animation director to work on Zeta Gundam and Gundam ZZ. If you think of the best looking episodes from those two shows they're nearly always from him or Hiroyuki Kitazume, who by ZZ had been promoted to character designer. Kobayashi absolutely draws the best/supervises the best Haman Karn. Murase I got into primarily as a character designer, with him having been in that role for Gundam Wing as well as several non-Gundam mecha shows like Gasaraki and Argento Soma. He'd eventually direct Ergo Proxy, which is a really strong show (being joined incidentally enough by another Gundam animation director from this era, Naoyuki Onda for the character designs) and returned to Gundam pretty recently as the director for the Hathaway movie.
