About the Episode Title

  • The title is 「蒼く輝く炎で」(あおくかがやくほのおで / aoku kagayaku honou de). It is translated as “With Shining Blue Fire,” and in the opening song, this line is followed by「この悲しみを」or “this sadness...”
  • The more commonly used kanji for あお / ao (blue) is 青.
  • Japanese Wikipedia landing-page for works with aoki honou (blue flame) in the title, regardless of which kanji they use.
  • The wiki page (Japanese), ANN Encyclopedia page, and Mangapedia page (Japanese) for the manga 青き炎 (Aoki Honou) (different kanji for 'ao' than the episode title).
  • Mangapedia page (Japanese) for the manga 蒼き炎 (Aoki Honou) (same kanji for 'ao' than the episode title).
  • Wiki page (Japanese) for manga creator Ishikawa Saburo (石川サブロウ).
  • ... And just because I think it's a cool, one of the covers for the 'artists with parallel lives' Aoki Honou manga:

The "Shining Blue Fire" title conundrum is an interesting one! I think the most parsimonious explanation is that the movie Kou and Nina were going to see depicts a tragic confrontation between a rookie Gundam pilot and a terminally depressed Zeon mobile armor pilot, and that if they'd somehow managed to see it, they would have realized that they're just characters in a Gundam-world fictional work. So we narrowly avoided a full-scale plot collapse into a metafictional singularity. Meanwhile, I don't recall whether this has been mentioned or not, but outgoing writer "Fuyunori Gobu" is an alias for the legendary Yoshitake Suzuki, a pillar of the Sunrise studio - creator of "Zero-Tester" and "Raideen," co-creator of "Zambot 3" and "Xabungle," etc. Yoshie Kawahara waxes rhapsodic about Suzuki in one of her Great Mechanics columns, which I'll have to get around to translating at some point. Might be useful reference if he ever shows up on a Gundam project again. :-)

I read the first part of this out-loud to Thom and he started cackling 😂 We hadn't realized Gobu was an alias - extremely useful thing to know, thanks!

Meanwhile, I've belatedly realized the theme of the episode titles this season, so now I can start guessing which ones you'll assign to each of the remaining episodes. :-)

You spoke about the crew who had worked on SPT Layzner. Will you be doing a research piece on TV show sponsors and what happened with Layzner and it’s sponsor or is that a little off topic and upsetting?

GundamPodcast

It's an interesting incident, but probably too far away from Gundam for us to discuss it on the regular podcast. We'd like to do some bonus episodes about other Sunrise mecha shows at some point, so maybe then?
