This song is about Scott borchetta, her ex manager. He founded her about 15 or 16 I think. Taylor had been trying for years to get into the record industry. He went up to her and said “I want to sign you. I don’t have a label yet. But I’m going to get one. But if you have trust in me, you’ll be a star” and Taylor said that she thought there was something so beautiful about that. Someone who had nothing putting all his faith into someone who basically was nothing. And look what came of it. She became a star. But he sold her masters to someone who has publicly bullied her for years. And she had no say or legal right over the matter. So this song is towards her ex manager, Scott borchetta. “If I’m on fire, you’ll be made of ashes too” you’re ruining my career but I bet you didn’t think what this what this business move would do to your career, since she has such a massive following. “ you wear the same jewels that I gave you as you bury me”. She made him so much money and then he tossed her away. “And I still talk to you when I’m screaming at the sky. And when you can’t sleep at night, you hear my stolen lullabies”. Her masters that he sold. She’s a lyrical genius.

... the long pond versions of this, exile, invisible string and this is me trying are just phenomenal... stripped down versions... just one or two musical instruments (piano/guitar) and Taylor just sitting there, calm as could be (and bon over on exile of course) but it's mesmerizing... all of them are - and you should listen to the interviews too... ... and her whole mini concert City of Lover concert from Paris - she performs in front of just 2,000 people - but the must-sees in my opinion are Death By A Thousand Cuts, Cornelia Street, Daylight, The Archer, The Man, You Need To Calm Down, and Lover... the other performances are good too... but I loved those... ... I love you guys' reactions... they are very fun to watch and the way you feel the lyrics and hear the harmonies and music that some don't, is wonderful... keep it up 😀

I’m going to get super personal but wanted to illustrate how Taylor’s lyrics can cut so deep. My parents married for 33 years divorced. My mother was an alcoholic and my father tried, he truly loved her. Their divorce destroyed her. She drank herself to death and my father mourned her deeply. This song truly resonates and Taylor I’m sure didn’t have this exact scenario in mind. More of a break up can be like death, but with my mom, it was literal death.

My Tears Ricochet is about her old record label manager, Scott Borchetta. She trusted him during the success of her first 6 albums just for him to betray her and sell her master recordings (stolen lullabies) to Scooter Braun. That’s why she’s re-recording those albums.

My grandfather drove my grandmother to "unalive" herself.. through insane amount of gaslight and manipulation.. eventually he filed for a divorce and put a restraining order on her not allowing her to go back to their house... so she went there to end it. this always made me think about how he showed up to the funeral.. wearing his wedding ring making everyone believe he was devasted.. for me.. this song is about their marriage and how everyone saw him for who he was. I know it's about the label for her, but this helped me on a whole different deep level. Thank you for my Ted Talk 🤣

Scott and Scooter tried to steal her soul from her but in the end they killed their careers and reputations like a couple of sinking battleships. One of my favorite lines. Of all Taylor songs. Of all songs, period. “You wear the same jewels that I gave you As you bury me.” What an absolutely devastating depiction of something/someone lost. Love or otherwise. It’s hard to explain, but I just imagine something of significance given (or told) to someone and then for that same person to turn around and disown them (for whatever reason). BUT at the same time doing so while having a token of them (aka wearing their jewelry - or like in Bejeweled - “Didn't notice you walking all over my peace of mind In the shoes I gave you as a present”). It just feels like the ultimate betrayal for me.
