My favorite is a tough call but I love call your mom. Two of my kids struggle with depression and have been in the scariest depths at times. I had to pull over the first time I heard it because I started sobbing. I love View Between Villages too. And Growing sideways. The whole album excellent.

My interpretation was not pregnancy tests, but 🤷‍♀️ to me the parallel lines are like the 2 of them. They are both having lives but, while they were "lost" from each other's life they were "paused". Like a break. The pause buttons are 2 parallel lines, also. So, when they push the 2 parallel lines and pause they become the 2 lines. I think he is implying on the break(s) they stay distant and they're not intertwining. That's what parallel lines do, never touch or get closer to each other. When she "calls [him] back" it's like unpausing. It seems like a serious/deep connection, but off and on again with her leaving both him and the town. He wants her more than she wants him, but they have something real even though they aren't compatible. Maybe I make no sense, but that's how I "read between the lines" pun intended and I'm not sorry.

So happy you guys are doing this album! Noah is one of my absolute faves and watching you guys react to songs I’ve heard a million times gives them new life. Just wanted to share that Homesick is a play on words. He’s not using it in the way you would normally think like being away and missing home, he’s using it in the sense of him being sick of his hometown. He feels stuck in the small town that he never left, it never changes and they’re behind the times and he’s sick of it. Since this was his first album and he had no idea the success he would have, he thought he would never make it out and would just live and die there which is recurring theme through the album.

Whew, had to go bawl my eyes out. "I'll call your mom" got me. About a year ago I convinced my long distance best friend (who is THOUSANDS of miles away) over the phone to go to the hospital after taking pills. I told her I was going to call her husband bec I couldn't get there in time to help and she was too scared/nervous to tell him what she did and she thought maybe it wouldn't be enough to be fatal and wanted to sleep it off, but i was scared she wouldn't wake up. She went and they pumped her stomach and she had to go to a "special hospital" to get meds/for a 72hr hold + more bec she was still not good when the hold was up, but she got to call me from a facility phone finally. Longest days of my life bec i didn't know if she was mad that "i made her" or something bec i haven't gone that long without talking to her since 2 moves ago of hers(military). I missed a call from her so I have the best voice mail of her joking in our dark humor about being "locked up." Wow, Noah just shoved me right back to that pain so abruptly. I literally cried so many tears the zit stickers came off my face 😭

One of my favorite albums of all time, thank you so much for this 🫶🏻 I could talk about it nonstop. Kaniyia, I thought the EXACT same when first listening to She Calls Me Back and it sounding very Harry Styles haha. Sobbing to You're Gonna Go Far is so real, my favorite off the album. Noah Kahan did a phenomenal job, lyrically and sonically. His expressions and the way he uses his voice just feels heavy, weighted with emotion. The album is such a cohesive story as well, very deep with meaning. Also there is one more song, it's called Forever, it was a bonus track which I'm sure you'd both enjoy as well. Loved reliving the album with you two and crying the whole time 😭🩵

The view between villages is about his struggle with finally accepting his struggles and overcoming them, but then returning home and all those bad feelings and memories washing over him and bringing back those lost traumas. “The death of my dog, the stretch of my skin (him growing up), it’s all washing over me…I’m angry again. The things that I’ve lost here, the people I knew….etc” He is recalling his hometown and what toll it had on him, but now that he is better he can recognize those feelings and overcome them. He is such a beautiful artist and says so many things in so little words. We need to cherish him 😭

“We sang retrograde” retrograde is a song by the artist maggie Rogers. You should definitely react to her! Especially her video of Pharrell reacting to her song while she was a NYU student at a master class, that’s how she got her start. Loved this video. My folk heart is happy ❤️

This album means so much to my husband and I and we listened to it endlessly when it came out. When we were wedding planning in 2023 and trying to figure out what song to walk back down the aisle to, this one was perfect. We have been through so much together and this song captured so many of our feelings. It was one of my most favorite moments in my life, to kiss him for the first time as my husband in front of all our friends and family and then have this song play. I'm so glad ya'll love this album as much as we do!

I actually love your idea for “runs perfect on empty.” I personally relate to it as, when I just keep going and give away myself and people please and only do things for other people, my tank ends up empty. But then everyone is happy and likes when I do those things, so I guess I keep doing it. It takes work to stop living for others and live for yourself instead

Omg this is truly the most phenomenal album. As a person who grew up and still lives in New England and as someone who has struggled with depression in the past, so many of his songs and the themes of this album hit so close to home. I have tears every time I listen to Call Your Mom. Noah live is a religious experience. Also, Growing Sideways is essentially him speaking about his depression. You’re Gonna Go Far the collab version with Brandi Carlisle is amazing. Her voice really brings something extra to that song I think. Could also be biased because she is like one of my top artist. I highly suggest you guys reacting to The Joke by her if you’re interested in more folk/americana music.

I have a theory that Paul Revere, No Complaints, Call Your Mom, and You’re Gonna Go Far, tells a story of someone desperate to leave their hometown (Paul Revere) and the depression starts to set in, they convince themselves that they shouldn’t have any complaints because they got their meds and everything should be fine (No Complaints) until it all becomes too much, the want to leave and the depression ( Call Your Mom) and that’s when the parents finally see how they have held them back and give them their blessings to leave (You’re Gonna Go Far). I love Noah’s story telling so much, I play him every day. His music speaks so much that I could never put words to.

I tried to go through the comments and didn’t see it but sorry in advance if someone’s told you this already! Noah recorded some short videos explaining Orange Juice a little bit, and he wrote it from two different perspectives. So the song is basically two friends who went through something traumatic together (the car accident) and instead of it bringing them closer together they both kind of went their separate ways and now they’re reconciling after some time. So they’re going back and forth talking to each other about how they’ve each changed or how they managed to keep going, and there’s anger and hurt, but they’re trying to come back together. Which I think is even more beautiful and if you listen to the lyrics you can pick out the two different POV’s. He’s amazing.

As a New Englander this is both painful and hilarious bc we are born with the story of Paul Revere already implanted in our minds 😂 He was a silversmith who lived in Boston. His job during the first battle of the Revolutionary War was to alert the minutemen (fighting for Independence) of the British troops arriving for battle in Massachusetts. His warning gave advance notice so that the revolutionaries could be ready to attack and have the first victories in the War. fun fact: the people fighting for independence were called Patriots, which is why that's the name of the New England NFL team

I live in Northern NY near the Canadian border and Vermont border. In Northern Attitude he says “forgive my northern attitude, I was raised out in the cold” and “forgive my northern attitude, I was raised on little light” because we have about 6 months of winter here with very cold temps and it gets dark at like 4pm so our northern attitudes are very much dictated by the weather lol

In case, nobody mentioned it yet, to “ride like Paul Revere” refers to a historic night in the American revolutionary war. Paul Revere was tasked with signaling the American troops when the British troops were on the move out of Boston, to warn them of the attack. When he spotted the British army leaving by crossing the Charles River, he put 2 lanterns in the steeple of the Old North Church to signal they were going to attack from the harbor (the code was to put one lantern in the steeple if they were approaching by land, and two if they were attacking by sea). He is often depicted galloping through villages, shouting “the British are coming!” and there is a famous poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow called The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. He also alerted fellow revolutionaries John Hancock and Samuel Adams that the British were coming to arrest them for their part in the Boston tea party, allowing them to escape capture. He was captured by the Brits that night, with two others, but he had already saved the day. He was a talented silversmith too and his products are highly valued today, not just for his notoriety, but also for their quality. History lesson dismissed.

Wanted to expand on the song “Growing Sideways” bc this song means so much to me. The song is about mental health/depression and the ups and downs of trying to treat it with therapy and medication. Sometimes antidepressants make people feel numb rather than happy, like they don’t feel sad anymore but instead they just don’t feel much of anything at all (“it’s better to die numb than feel it all”). Regarding that line “if my engine works perfect on empty, I guess I’ll drive,” running on an empty engine can mean going through the motions getting through daily life even though you’re not really “in it” emotionally, or alternatively going through the motions while unmedicated/depressed where you just feel empty inside, which definitely feels like running on an empty tank (speaking from personal experience lol). And then “everyone’s growing, everyone’s healthy” talking about how when you’re feeling empty/depressed/stuck like this, and then comparing yourself to the people around you, and it seems like everyone else is doing so great in their lives while you’re just drifting/existing.

Astrologer over here laughing at the retrograde line lol. "Retrograde" is when a planet has a backward movement; it affects the energy of the planet. In mainstream culture, people joke about Mercury being in Retrograde. Mercury governs communication and thinking, so Mercury in Retrograde is often when people have fights or miscommunications. Retrogrades also tend to get blamed for acting out of character or doing something rash or irresponsible. I understand the lines "we once sang retrograde, we'd shake the frame of your car" to mean that they got lost in the rash passion and had relations in her car ;)
