So Cowboy Like Me is thought to be inspired by Matty Healy tied to his NME awards acceptance speech (that she was present for) where he says “One of my heroes is Brian Eno and he splits art into kind of two categories – cowboys and farmers. Farmers like to cultivate their thing and keep it the same and cowboys like to go out and find new pastures, and I think there are so many wonderfully talented people in this room and I don’t have any advice because I’m really scared and I feel really small but my only advice would be, just be a cowboy.”

Ivy and Cowboy Like Me are 2 of THE BEST songs ever IMO. She recorded some of Evermore in Marcus Mumford’s home studio and asked him to come sing background vocals with her on Cowboy Like Me. There’s a great live performance with him from the Era’s Tour. It’s become her and Travis’ song. She sang it multiple times with him at the show, and he says it’s one of his favorites. It fits them SO perfectly!

On Cowboy Like Me, when she says- “that was all before I locked it down”, she immediately goes into a huge play on words right after- “Now you hang from my lips like the Gardens of Babylon”. The Gardens of Babylon are widely believed to be a myth….. “With your boots beneath my bed”…. Is he there? Or did he just leave his boots behind? “Forever is the sweetest con”. We don’t truly know if they ended up together or if he conned her and broke her heart. Either way, she will now “never love again”. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Lyrical genius 🤌 One of my top 10 Taylor songs🫶

Ok..... Ive never heard or thought or read about Ivy being about an actual fire that resulted in death of the female character. Is this really the widely accepted explanation and I'm late to the party? Or is it just a side story possibility? And to answer your question T&K, as long as you don't run out of Taylor content, I love everything you guys do. I do prefer deeper dives into songs vs a skim of the whole album. But I'm enjoying how this is working out where you're focusing on 1 album but doing a deeper dive into each song and having it be 3 parts. I think each of Taylor's albums has a different vibe to it. So it's kinda fun to do 1 album deep dive Also, don't bank on Rep coming out any time soon. I spent all last year (I have a post in Jan 2024 mentioning Rep) waiting for it. So I'm ready for it yesterday, hope it comes tomorrow but no longer plan my life around it lol. So I reccomend not planning any future content in terms of a timeline on a certain Rep release date. Ive clowned hard and am taking a step back lol

In Ivy “Clover blooms in the field Spring breaks loose, the time is near What would he do if he found us out? Crescent moon, coast is clear Spring breaks loose, but so does fear” can be her talking about time. In the first verse she says “in from the snow” (winter). But now clovers are blooming (spring). So this affair was happening in the winter in to the spring. Spring is also considered a time of new life. So “spring breaks loose but so does fear” can also represent that this affair is giving her new life, something that was missing in her marriage, but it also brings fear because what will happen if her husband finds out. Also if you listen to the clean version of Ivy it says “oh I can’t” instead of GD.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this yet, there’s a popular theory that the bridge of Coney island is referencing a few of Taylor’s ex’s all at once. “The hallway/birthday” line would be about Jake not coming to her birthday party (All too well 10/the moment i knew) “paint your bluest skies the darkest grey” line references Dear John (“You paint me a blue sky Then go back and turn it to rain”) Then the accident/face line references Out of the Woods/Harry (hit the breaks too soon, you were looking at me!) and the Podium line could be a reference to her not thanking Calvin Harris during a speech when they were together

I know you're worried about running out of content, but something that can extend it- is doing all the extra things that come along with each album. Jim Games on patreon is a great example. He's doing every album chronologically and has been doing it for almost 2 years now because he does all the extras with each album. He also takes his time and spends months in each era. But for example- in Rep he did the stadium tour and all the "making of a song" videos she released with it. After Lover he did Miss Americana and all the talk show interviews, music videos, etc. And I know you went to the show, but you went after TTPD was added, so I would love to watch you guys react to the orignal set list on the Eras Tour Movie on Disney+. The National has been my favourite band for the last 17 years (i’m 31). Aaron is in it with his twin brother, then there’s another set of brothers & Matt (singer). Fun fact: the music for “cardigan” was originally something the band was working on, but Matt was having trouble writing lyrics for it, and then it found its way Taylor. There’s another song on Folklore that has an old National guitar instrumental from their documentary that came out ~10 years ago. You can tell by her lyrics that she had been listening to them a lot around this time; heavy Matt influence. Any song Aaron works on with her had a huge National element to it (Folklore, Evermore, Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve). The drummer is on “long story short”, too. I would love if you two got into the National. As much as I love them both, this collab kind of let me down. I think the Alcott is better. However, their whole discography is good. One of the first songs I ever heard by them was “Mistaken For Strangers”, and I was a different person after that lol 🖤

What I love about Taylor is that she gives us perspective on things she was going through after some time away from them. Long Story Short summarises the whole of the stories of Reputation in one song. Soooo clever. It references the alley, which I think was outside the Met Gala when she saw Joe after meeting him at Gigi Hadids bday (April 29..?) and he’s passing by just like the glimmer of a comet in the sky That night is also referenced in getaway car when she danced with Tom H while still with Calvin Harris (i was in the alley surrounded on all sides) It’s got so much in it about how she escaped the world with Joe after the Kim & Kanye drama etc etc I might need some fact checking on the Joe lore but it’s def referencing that whole time. Whats exciting to me is that they’ll be songs in future albums giving perspective on the Midnights and TTPD eras.

It mustve been an AI response lol During a talk Taylor gave at a songwriters convention around the time Evermore was released, she said “If my lyrics sound like a letter written by Emily Dickinson’s great-grandmother while sewing a lace curtain, that’s me writing in the quill genre,” Swift said, noting that her single “Ivy” from “Evermore” would fall under that category." This has basically confirmed the suspicions behind "Ivy" which was that it is from Sue Gilberts POV, Emily Dickinsons life long best friend who married Emily's brother, whom was later revealed to be Emily's secret lover her whole life once all her secret poems, diaries, and letters to Sue were found. Once you know that story - Ivy's meaning slaps you in the face lol its actually quitre beautiful. Emily Dickinson references and inspirations are all over the album. Its one of my fav fun facts about Taylor. Also that she learned she is a descendant of Emily Dickinson, 6th cousins, 3 times removed. I am a lit nerd and I found that fucking amazing lol
