FIRSTTTT 💪🏻

Maya Dougherty

Noooooo you should’ve started with his self titled album first!!!

Sofia

Yessss!!!

Jen

Omg he's such an angel 🤤

Jen

Also people in Ireland speak English, but Gaelic (Irish) is their country's original language. They still teach it in schools :) I loved there for a month during my undergrad to observe in their schools!

🦈 Ali F 🦈

Omg thank you for finally doing it! Hozier is my favorite after Taylor 🩷

hannah

LETS GOOOO the way I’ve been waiting for you guys to react to this.. this album has me in tears every single time! Seeing hozier for the first time live at Fenway this year I’m so excited

Sana 🇵🇸

Omg can’t wait for Northern attitude I love the collab so much 😻😍 you’ve gotta do cherry wine, take me to church, from Eden, work song and Almost 🙏🙌 … or u know all of it 😹

Amanda

If you haven’t already, y’all have to look up the explanation behind how he wrote this album, it’s inspired by Dante’s Inferno and the journey through the circles of hell, so there are song(s) to match each circle/sin (ie: lust, gluttony, greed). It’s literal poetry 🥹

Kate

The river Lithe in Greek mythology is the 'forgetting' river, as in the first time his lover kissed him, he drank it dry to forget something, either who he was before them or after. the Liffey believe is a river in Ireland that is fairly polluted so drinking it would be really harsh on the stomach, saying that drinking the Lithe was a difficult thing for his system as in forgetting/the transformation of self is not an easy process for him.

Marissa

Hell yes! Been waiting for so long for you guys to react to this ! Truly a masterpiece. You guys actually just missed his US leg of his tour. I went to one show and honestly it was amazing. He sounds exactly the same and he puts so much emotion into performing! Can't wait for pt 2!

Robin

Yay!! I’ve been waiting for you to react to Hozier! He writes the most beautiful lyrics. Seconding the request that you check out his debut album 💕

Jessica

I’m so stoked about this! Love this album but his self titled album is actually life changing! Can’t wait to see that in the future too!

Nadia Mitchell

mmff i love how hozier makes you feel the weight of the words I wanted to give you some offshore recommendations, these are NZ artists and they give weight to the words and the message being said like no other. Trust me! Ultralight beam - Stan Walker, LIVE if you can! This song will pass the goosebumps test on your spirit. You'll get it when you hear it. Also I bet you will be legitimately be blown AWAY by his vocal talent. SIX60: Kia Mau Ki Tō Ūkaipō/don't forget your roots. The English version is great to learn what the message is, but if you listen in te reo, you feel it. Highlighly recomend! The weight that a language can bring to the message just has me in awe

🦈 Ali F 🦈

As others have probably mentioned, this album is an interpretation of Dante’s inferno in which Dante travels through the 9 circles of hell which are represented by different types of sins. De Selby parts 1 and 2 represent the descent into hell. First Time is the first circle, which is what is called Limbo in the catholic faith. This is for those who never knew Christ like pagans and unbaptized babies. Francesca is the second circle which represents lust. It’s a fascinating musical interpretation of what has always been one of my favorite books. Thanks for taking this journey with us!

Kay K

Let's start a fundraising so they can go see his 3rd US leg. THIS album, actually ALL albums are AMFACKINGMAZING live. Out of body experience

Ashley

Can’t wait for part two 😭

Chip Tovey

Why does nothing I look up match what’s playing? Y’all need to say the track title. I’ve looked up the first two tracks and these lyrics don’t match what’s playing.

Chip Tovey

Y’all started a reaction to this album with part one being disk 3? I haven’t listened to this album cause his best work was his debut which I’ve played 1,000 times, but I went to disk one track one and of course it didn’t match what y’all were playing. Is Terry starting a trend where you’re going to do your reactions in reverse? Start with the last song and play them backwards? 🤣

Chip Tovey

Am I apparently alone in thinking Hozier is overproduced? These tracks have so much crap in them, and so much noise, that the mix detracts from his two greatest qualities, his voice and his guitar. Half the time I can’t even hear his guitar. Oh well, I miss the debut. His brilliance is being drowned a horrible death at the hands of bad production. Hozier- A, his Producery- F-

Sasha B

Turned this one off bc I didn’t like the music nearly as much as his debut album!

Beth Williams

This album is so beautiful ❤️ it had me in a chokehold from the moment I listened to it. I’d recommend looking up some of the background of the songs and what they relate to. It’s quite complex with his links to Dante’s Inferno but it really does help paint the picture of the album as a whole. My favourite is Unknown/Nth it’s so incredibly beautiful and when you imagine the 9th circle and its occupants, it really does paint a vivid picture. Seeing him live is an otherworldly experience, he sounds even better live.

Miranda Thomas

just came here to say you both look so good hello?????

Shanna

I actually haven't listened to the whole album yet either, so I'll experience it with you! His voice is ethereal.

Kathryn

I’ve been wanting to see y’all react to Hozier! He’s truly an amazing artist, from his lyrics, to his voice, to his guitar with a pretty great personality all on top of it. Excited to see what y’all think of his other songs!

Kimberly eckerson

I can’t for you to listen to I’Carrion, it’s my fave 🥹😭

Alexis Luna

I can’t wait for you to listen to the whole thing - it’s incredible. I highly recommend watching some of his live performances too!

Kailey's Corner

Ohhh yes, you gotta check out Wasteland, Baby! special edition next!!!

Riclyn Sherman

This album is top tier! I can’t wait for you to get to Abstract! I tattooed it on my arm because it resonated with me so much

Kasey

Okay I know a lot of people have already said that this album is inspired by the circles of hell in Dante’s inferno, but I wanna specifically mention Francesca! It’s a story in Dantes Inferno about the second circle of Hell, where Francesca and her lover were killed after being found out by her husband, and forced to spend all eternity in the second circle, which is an eternal hurricane. So what I lovingly refer to as the “wall of sound” at the end of the song really sounds like a beautiful whirlwind of music that resembles a hurricane

Riclyn Sherman

It’s an actual crime that he hasn’t been nominated for a Grammy. This is a conceptional album based on Dante’s inferno. Each song is based on the levels of Hell Dante’ traveled and Hozier’s interpretation of what that would be. I would definitely pull up genius and read it over after you listen. It’s truly amazing - some people say this album is “over producted” compared to his others, but its meant to set a tone and the production really does take you on a journey through the decent into madness and his rise back up to the light. ALL his albums are truly amazing - especially his song writing. But this album specifically speaks volumes on his talent. Seeing him live is TRANSCENDENT. I hope you guys to see him one day

Ashleigh

You guys should really check out Jelly Roll, he’s an incredible artist. His song save me will emotionally destroy you but it’s an incredible song!

Erica Van Pelt

We need Hozier’s debut album immediately

Riclyn Sherman

I’d love for you to look into these songs! Francesca is about a pair of lovers that are sent to hell for their “uncontrollable lust” in Dante’s inferno. Francesca was in a political marriage with a man, but fell deeply in love with his brother - condemning themselves to hell for their sins. “Put me back in it” “I would do it again” It’s tragic and shows how nuanced these “sins” can be

Stevi

Having so much fun listening along to songs I haven’t heard before. ❤️❤️

Ciana Raine

This man is even better live. I absolutely recommend watching him- I’ve been to a LOT of concerts and I cannot describe the aura of his performances. His vocals and musicians ✨ top tier. Loved watching his evolution over the last decade ! So happy to watch yall ❤️

kaylei tompkins

Work song, someone new, and take my to church of course lol

Jillian Noss

you would loooooove his debut album

Jesicah

Please please please…I beg you, to watch the live version of Cherry Wine. Literally rips your soul out

Nikita Menon

I have been waiting for a Hozier reaction OMG! This was amazing, cant wait for Part 2! Also, wonder if you've heard his older songs like Angel of small death and the Codeine scene, Cherry Wine, Like Real People Do and so on.

Virginia

England took Irelands language from them. They weren’t allowed to speak it or teach it to their children. It’s an act of rebellion to sing it.

Virginia

Francesca is that bitchhhh

Brittnie Rheayn

I deffo miss the full album reactions being dropped in one video. I wanna get a snack and be SAT for the next two hours

Rebekah Dunn

Ireland mostly speaks English due to England colonising them. The same happened in Scotland. We had our own language but it is really only spoken far north of the highlands and the islands off of the North coast of Scotland. I'm from Glasgow which is kind of the second main city and Edinburgh as the capital of Scotland (where I saw TSwift woo!). I don't know anyone that speaks Scottish Gaelic (Gaidhlig) I tried to learn some once to keep it alive but it is really difficult. All of our road signs have the English place names and the Gaelic ones beside it. Our govts. attempt to try and stop it dying out I think. Irish Gaelic (Gaeilge) is different but they both come from the same original language (this is where I start getting lost because ancient language development is too complicated lol). And after that very boring and not that in-depth descripton - back to Hozier. Hozier is my Husband and I's favourite of all time. We've seen him live so many times and he sounds even better live than in his studio recordings. I'm pretty sure he's the only artist I have ticketmaster alerts for because we can't miss him lol.

Nadia Diaz

So he based this album on Dante’s Inferno. The story is about Francesca, who was married to a jerk. She met and fell in love with his brother, Paolo. The husband finds out and murders them, sending them to the 2nd circle of hell. This song is Paolo basically saying he’d do it all over again for her. “I’d tell them put me back in it! I would do it again. Just to hold you for a minute, I’d go through it again.” Hozier is all the literature and culture we need ✨

gigi

Most people in Ireland speak English but most Irish people are taught Irish in school as a way to preserve the language and culture (Ireland was an oppressed colony of England for years and years, for context)

Nina Alves

Please please listen to Nina Cried Power!!!!

Bren

can't wait for part 2!

Dayln Kaul

The river lethe part: hozier basically said he would drink from the river of oblivion just to experience his lover kissing him for the first time again

Mary Beth S.

I've watched this video SO many times, it's my current comfort video😅 And K I know exactly what you mean about First Time-- we DO all fight off the absence of ourselves, I feel like that verse about the flowers means we all resist leaving this world without leaving something behind us: fighting off the absence of who we were after we're gone ("but, anyway..." that's just my interpretation) And Hozier knows what you mean about understanding what it means without being able to put it into words, he even references that feeling in another song on this album! Can't wait for part 2, I'm loving experiencing this again with you!

avenraine

my favorite fun fact: Unreal, Unearth is the FIRST album that Hozier has sung in Gaelige on!!! it's essentially a love letter to Ireland, the lost lover whose history is obscured by the colonial violence that the land and people endured, making it incomprehensible to those attempting to return to a pre-colonial past. it's also inspired by Dante's Inferno, and I just LOVELOVELOVE intertextuality!!! my favorite album to ever come from Hozier fr

Zoe Berman

I loveeee hozier and this album! the concert was unbelievable! Also, I like the album reactions being broken up into parts. I have a busy schedule so it's easier for me to have the parts broken up to have time to watch :) ALSO and this is very important! I have a hozier song for yall... Shrike!!! I really think this would be an AMAZING song for you guys to do a deep dive reaction and interpretation into. It is extremely poetic, BEAUTIFUL, and i think terry would like the fingerpicking guitar he plays for the instrumental. would love to see how you guys like it once you finish reacting to this album. <3

Victoria Coyman

fun fact: he mentioned at a Boston pop up show that “Francesca” is referencing Dante’s inferno (in hell, sin of lust = caught in a hurricane) - it’s basically “I’d go back through hell for you”

Martina S.

Hozier hozier hozierrrrrrr is THAT GUY UGH YES

Martina S.

His debut album is amazing. All of his albums are amazing. His mom does the art for most if not all of them I believe. And he is THIS good if not BETTER live. Unreal

Martina S.

Please please please do his other albums too

Martina S.

If you ever get the chance to go see him live you HAVE to do it. It is so worth it

Martina S.

“I said I get it? I don’t recall that” 😂💀🙏🏻

Martina S.

Wasteland baby is also UNREAL

Jessica Hines

I cannot wait to see you guys finish this one!! So so good!!!

Kylynn Walton

This man is so insanely talented I almost can’t deal. It’s been a little over 10 years since his debut album and I still ain’t over his lyricism on that one. From Eden, Work Song, Cherry Wine, Like Real People Do, Sedated…. Honesty the entire album was just one of the most amazing things to ever be released. That album and John Mayer’s Continuum are the eighth and ninth wonders of the world. And I will die on the hill that John Mayer will never release another album as good as Continuum. 😂 granted this is just my opinion, but as two music lovers who appreciate all of the aspects put into a song, I think y’all would really enjoy Hozier’s Debut.

Amanda Michaelis

He actually did a song for the game God of War called Blood Upon the Snow!

Riclyn Sherman

Coming back to this for a rewatch and waiting on part two 😉

Emily O

So glad hozier introduced yall to Irish! it was almost a completely dead language because the British tried really hard to eradicate it. when the Irish were poor and vulnerable due to the “famine” (the British govt stole all their food and let them starve) , the British PAID people to NOT teach their children the Irish language. Listen to the song Famine by sinead O’Conner, it’s a quick intro to the history, and is a reminder as to why the irish are so strongly in support of oppressed peoples in any country.

Zoe Brown

The debut album is absolutely insane I love every song 😭 also to someone from a warmer climate is my fave song on unreal unearth!!

Erin Koyamatsu

I can’t wait for you guys to continue this album, please dive deep on Genius to get all the background to this unbelievably brilliant album❤️❤️

elizabeth keys

I'm BEGGING on my hands and knees for y'all to do both of his prior albums, as well. His combining of American blues and Irish folk is magical, there is no other way to describe it. The way that he writes and produces his work is so thoughtful and artfully done and, of course, he is one of the best vocalists of our time. You will not be disappointed with the wide range of styles and sounds and stories he delivers, I promise.

Kayla Clay

The Irish verse in De Selby always gives me shivers. And not just because I hear my name @-@

Kayla Clay

"Does he have a song with Florence, y'all?" GURL, we've been praying for it for nigh on 10 years now. There IS, however, a video of him covering "Cosmic Love" during a quarantine stream

Orla

Part 2 needed so badly!! 😭 It only gets better!!

Stacey

Work Song from his first album is my FAVE!!

Jen Mejias

Love your reactions! Seeing Hozier perform this entire album live was similar to a spiritual experience ✨💕

freya 🌺

I’m sure someone has probably commented this already, but Hozier DOES actually have a song from a video game. It’s called “Blood upon the snow” and it’s actually sent me to heaven more times I can count. It’s SO beautiful, definitely worth a listen 💗💗

C

"does he have a song with florence?" We would never survive it as a collective. 🥹 But i still want a collab from them 🤣

Natalie 💖

the river lethe is a river in the underworld lost souls drink from to erase memories before they can be reincarnated. HES SAYING WHEN SHE KISSED HIM HE WAS REBORN 😭😭😭 NO ONE YEARNS LIKE ANDREW HOZIER BYRNE!!!!!

Sarah Fisher

Saw Francesca performed last year at Lolla and I BAWLED at the end when he breaks down into the round robin vocals/strings. It was literally BLISS. He had a live cellist and violinist playing 😭

Cameron

hearing these songs performed in the dark in the pouring rain was absolutely magical. got waterboarded so bad i had to call off work the next day, but magical nonetheless

Hannah O'Dell

Please listen to Wasteland, Baby!

hayley keenan

There is nothing like listening to this on a vinyl, In the kitchen while its raining outside

Riclyn Sherman

Re-watching the hozier playlist ❤️‍🔥 wasteland baby album needs to be added! 😉🫶🏻

Anora

I find it so funny that it took them 3 songs to notice his accent. Like I dont blame them cause theyre so focused on the music, but Hozier has such a heavy irish accent it was the first thing I noticed when I found him

Riclyn Sherman

On my 3-4 re watch because I’m snow in and I’m still holding out hope for wasteland baby 😬
