Chain link fences = so houseless people can’t shelter under them Pose with guns - discussing some state rep/senator did that. Saying they protect guns harder than people that need help. Jesus white face = racism South will not rise until sins are paid Strange Fruit = African Americans that were hanged. The song Strange Fruit by Billie Holliday as example Till the roots, I think is a reference to Emmett Till

Hayley Williams is such an incredible artist. I think the Ego project is her best solo work.

Momo

Hayley is talking about her hometown being gentrified in the first verse. And touching on how most yt organized religions in Tennessee/this country use money as a tool. Verse 2 being about "anti-homeless" architecture, the juxtaposition between guns being used as a prop in a christmas card while guns are an actual massive issue throughout this country. The Jesus line and everything after is self explanatory (she went *off* and I love her for it). Every sin being slavery. Strange Fruit references the Billie Holiday song about protesting the lynching of POC. And I think the chorus is just her remembering what her city used to look like. Shes a true believer so, perhaps she sees a better future for it and America.

Also plz add Ellie Goulding to the spinny wheel 🤞🏻💜

I definitely think True Believer is about her relationship to the South and the presence of mega churches and their following in the South. The first verse in particular definitely seems like she’s talking about Nashville because that’s a lot of what’s going on there now with real estate and commodification of the environment there. The chorus seems like she might have made a turn back to her relationship with Jesus, but the church itself is where she has drawbacks.

Laura J✨

That’s so cool! Glad they recognize the greatness we see 😁

TAMala

In True Believer, I’m pretty sure she’s talking about “Christians” in America, specifically in the south, who equate guns and whiteness with holiness.

Alexa K

I believe it’s hinting at the hypocrisy of what is the church talks about but doesn’t show in their actions.

Amanda

The double entendres of Till the roots is one of the hardest lines I’ve ever seen. Coupled with the strange fruit reference, I truly believe she’s referencing Emmett Til.

Brody Thrash

Hope y’all listen to the rest of the singles, they are all sooooo good !!

Please listen to her album Flower for vases and petals for armor! You would love them! 🫶🏻

Zy_..

Perioddd 🩷- should def do ice in my OJ & Ego death at a bachelorette party !!!

Hannah

In addition to everyone else’s interpretations, I think the chorus is speaking to Christians that make up beliefs to fit their narrative (“I reanimate your bones with MY belief”) instead of what Jesus actually taught. And in my personal experience, the phrase “True Believer” is only used by people that have the values mentioned in the song (ie white Jesus)

Hannah

Please react to Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party next! Though you should listen to all of them!

Brandi

How about that ‘strange fruit’ reference? 👀 also ‘hard bargain’ as well…

Bailey Gray

I would say she’s referring to southern Baptist. People turning “religion” into whatever fits their agenda.

Mikaila Roberts

I feel like the chorus is like… all these people say they love god and America but look at how they behave… and she’s saying like f*** you guys I’m the one who actually believes in the thing you say you believe in

Claudia ~

I love all 17 songs!! They sound sooo good! You guys should react to all of them please!! ❣️❣️

Meghan Benton

The whole song is definitely about the roots of Christian Nationalism and White Supremacy in this country that are currently on display in the MAGA administration. The people who are furthest from Christ love to call themselves True Believers

tyler Palmer

Emmit Till / you have to dig up the roots of racism before it’s gone. You can’t just cover it up. Chorus in reference to Ezekiel 37 in the Bible.

Jac Negrete

I don’t know if you know this but there is a live version of the Riot album

Gaby

Maybe someone has mentioned this but could you add the self-titled Paramore album to your list? Next to After Laughter, it's one of my faves. Zac and Josh had left the band by then and shortly after this album, Jeremy left the band only for Zac to come back (if I'm not mistaken) and all these emotions show in the music Oh and Petals for Armor too! It's Hayley's solo album, made during the Paramore hiatus after After Laughter and after she divorced Chad (the breakup was definitely not amicable lol, she goes into it in Dead Horse)

Megan Little

Please please please do her live performance on Jimmy Fallon!!!!

I’ll never understand why people who love the reference on reference on reference thing Taylor Swift does aren’t *all* OBSESSED with this song. I’m sure I don’t have to explain the Strange Fruit reference but for her to follow it up with “Hard Bargain” in reference to the history of her hometown, Franklin, TN, is just a one two punch - she ain’t pullin’ em. Southern Gotham refers to Nashville - there’s a building in its skyline that looks like Batman so it’s nicknamed Gotham City. She’s calling out the South’s racist history, the hypocrisy of white nationalists calling themselves Christians, including the contemporary country artists who pander to them, to the benefit of Nashville’s tourist industry but to the detriment of everyone else, most of all the people who built its Music City roots (and not just the literal building of the South by formerly enslaved Black folks like the man who founded Hard Bargain). She’s also calling out how Country Music®️ (as a commercial industry, not to be confused with country music) brushed under the rug the appropriation of so many musical influences (that span genres but are now often siloed off - something Beyoncé was pointing out with Cowboy Carter) from the Black musicians who invented the banjo and influenced so much of country’s most traditional elements, AND she’s continuing the thread of her beef with Nashville/Tennessee leadership causing the gentrification of the place she found her chosen family and all the things that made it Music City in the first place. Ie, so that “the club with all the hardcore shows now just a grayscale Dominos” like losing its character and identity and cultural institutions in favor of corporate profit). It’s part of the larger EDAABP theme - the title track of the album is more explicitly about Nashville in particular, but this song takes her beef with Nashville and just extrapolates it out, like she finished “Ego Death” and was like “YOU KNOW WHAT, ON THAT NOTE, AND ANOTHER THING.” I also think the “kill the soul, turn a profit” is a play on the word “prophet,” as in the way white Christian nationalists will ignore truth tellers (including Jesus himself), but idolize false prophets (something she’s been mulling since “Idle Worship” on the After Laughter album). And as in the way mainstream country fans will do the same by shunning artists that are making undeniably country music who speak up about racial issues (getting angry when they’re “woke”) but idolize racists like Morgan Wallen (the racist country singer bar owner referred to in Ego Death). …like I said, I know y’all love Taylor and her Easter eggs, and I appreciate a clever wordplay or a wink from Taylor plenty, but Hayley as a lyricist has always been looking outside her own personal experiences to understand the world around her through music, and I think this album demonstrates that she’s not just a SANGER but an absolute POET.

I know I’m late as hell but as a Nashvillian just wanted to add a couple things. Y’all are spot on with everything else. Our rep Andy Ogles, who gerrymandered his way into the spot, poses on his Christmas card with his whole family. Meanwhile we’ve had 2 school shootings in the last couple years. So that part is not a generalization. It’s a straight “shot” at that POS who should not even be representing our district but they split the county up because it was a blue dot in our red state forever. There is a building that’s been in downtown Nashville since I was a kid and we have always called it the “Batman” building. Think that’s another link to Southern Gotham because it’s a Nashville landmark. They literally run the unhoused out of the city and put up fences so the tourists won’t see them. They did it for the NFL draft and other big events that come here. They also want to make it illegal to be unhoused. So-called Christians punching down on those less fortunate.

Check out “Strange Fruit” and Billie Holliday and all of the race implications that are involved. She performed it on Late Night and it was so moving.

Holly Hirschkorn

As a Nashville native close to Hayley’s age, this song is deep. The comments are already great and provide so much context (Southern Gotham = Nashville’s iconic Batman Building, etc). I haven’t seen this mentioned yet so I’ll add, there was a music venue called The Muse that was one of the only places to host “hardcore”/alternative shows. It closed during COVID and is now literally a Domino’s Pizza. Also, honorable mention to the music visit for Ego Death which featured Tennessee Representative Justin Jones, a young charismatic politician who is outspoken about these types of issues. He also joined her on stage for night 3 in Nashville. Hayley does not play when it comes to racism and civil rights issues. “Find me at Whole Foods, b*^h. I don’t care”.
