I didn’t request Neon Moon this round but for whoever did, bless 🙏 What an absolute classic. It sounds a little R&B because country and R&B share a common ancestor of that Southern gospel and blues/soul. Just mix in more bluegrass/strings/storytelling and you get country, while mix in more jazz/brass/beats to get R&B. Knowing y’all were already familiar with praise songs and R&B, it makes all the sense in the world why y’all love that good country music ❤️🫶

I skipped ahead to Smells Like Teen Spirit because I got too excited for it and this is my favorite reaction I’ve seen from y’all ever 🤣🤘 But um… oh shit, um, sitting here waiting in dread til y’all realize why Kurt doesn’t sing that song, ever, anymore 😬😔 He was like a meteorite, he lit music history up fast and left us just as fast. The whole arc of how we got from 80s hair bands and punk to 90s grunge and riot grrl to 00s emo is such a perfect example of art imitating life and life imitating art, y’all are making me want to dig out (ha, 🥁) my Sleater Kinney records and reread all my favorite memoirs from 90s grunge and riot grrl musicians. (Not that I want to move on from 90s grunge too fast but just realizing you two are going to LOVE Linkin Park. RIP Kurt and Chester 😔)

Omg Kaniya look up Kathleen Hanna’s “girls to the front” mantra re: mosh pits!! To Terry’s point, they can be dangerous for smaller folks, so Kathleen Hanna (de facto leader of the riot grrl movement, which is where all the rocker girls can be found in the 90s, obscured by all the Pearl Jams and Smashing Pumpkins) had a policy at Bikini Kill and Le Tigre shows, to make sure there was a designated place for people to be safe if they didn’t want to get caught up in a mosh pit full of (often) big, aggro dudes.

Don’t Speak is a bit of a Fleetwood Mac situation: Gwen wrote that song about her and Tony Kanal (the bass player) because they were breaking up. So from then on, they had to perform that song on stage together about their breakup. Brutal. Edit: well damn, if I would have waited a few more minutes… 🥴

Best surprise on a snow day stuck in the house!!! So many good ones in this batch! Most of these were staples in my childhood growing up so it was really fun seeing your reactions to these really iconic songs. The Nirvana reaction had me dying the most with Terry's singing tho 😭 RIP Kurt. My fave Nirvana song remains their cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World, it's Kurt singing it live too so I think y'all would really appreciate it. Also, Idk if you guys know of the Foo Fighters but the drummer Dave Grohl is the lead singer of that band. They'd be interesting listen as well. Anyway loved the video as always! 💕

You guys not knowing No Doubt makes me feel ancient, but I’m glad you got a bit of the Gwen and Tony backstory. Quick version: Gwen’s brother Eric started the band in the ’80s, and Gwen did backup vocals pretty much until after their original singer tragically passed. The lineup changed a bit, but the four you saw in the video have been together since the mid-’90s. Gwen and Tony were together for a long time, and the Tragic Kingdom album was mostly about their breakup and shot them to fame where Gwen got most of the spotlight. They did more albums (Rock Steady was another big hit) then Gwen went solo in ’04. They last put out an album together in 2012, but they have still done some shows together since then. I’m actually seeing them at The Sphere in Vegas next year!

The grunge movement was started kind of in protest to the 80’s glam rock hairbands. It went against all of the pretty men. Greasy, flannel, and raw was the new way to be when the 90’s started. Nirvana got so huge, Kirt really had a hard time with it because the movement was supposed to buck all of the commercialism, but it just caught on. It was the ultimate irony.

It is so odd seeing Spice Girls then & now. I only know some (they were not my cup of tea) but they were huge. This song was everywhere! We didn’t have streaming but it was played at least once an hour on almost every radio station, on tv (MTV & VH1), in malls, (weirdly) at schools, & every school dance. 😆 (and also used by evil younger siblings to torture older ones 👀) You guys obviously know Mel B from AGT. (Simon Cowell said his biggest professional mistake was “passing” on the Spice Girls). Victoria is a model (“actress” is big stretch 😆) & successful fashion designer but is better known for her marriage to David Beckham (legendary British football ⚽️ player & considered/awarded one of the sexiest men alive 🥵) & their 4 kids. The other 3 are still public figures just not as famous but are all doing well.

Nirvana superfan here!! while this was one of their major hits, Kurt ended up hating this song by the end of his life because he said he started to notice the people who bullied him in high school loved the song and always asked them to play it. The line from the chorus "Here we are now, entertain us" is what Kurt used to say when he and the band/the guys walked into a place since the beginning of their friendship before the band took off. Please listen to "Something in the Way" and "Come As You Are" by Nirvana as well. Kurt is one of my favorite writers and voices of all time. So glad to see yall love the music I have always loved

I would love to see y'all react to some more No Doubt. There are some really hard hitters from their 90's work all the way through the early 00's before Gwen went solo. The band lore is also really rich. Gwen's brother started the band before Gwen joined. Later, Gwen dated the bassist Tony Kunal and wrote a ton of the band's song about how the relationship went south including Don't Speak. Most of the album Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn reflects their breakup and aftermath.

I lived very close to the house Kurt lived in when he died. I didn’t realize it was his house at first, I drove past it constantly. Then one day I noticed a bench, and I couldn’t understand why this beautiful area with a single bench was covered in graffiti and had “trash” all over it. When I got home, I was reading the news and it was the anniversary of his death that day. The bench is used by fans and mourners to visit and leave notes/flowers/trinkets.
