Christina was huge in the early 2000's, but she was constantly compared to Britney, the whole manufactured pop singer rivalry crap that was grossly popular with the media back then. Britney was the "pop princess" and Christina was seen as sort of the antithesis to that. Her first album fit into that mold of pop princess, but her second major album, Stripped, was a complete 180 from that image, raunchier and dirtier (the first single literally being called "Dirrty", lol). Back to Basics was a turn to 1920's-1950's style music, big band and jazz and soul. I kind of fell away from listening to her after Back to Basics, but her first three albums are definitely worth listening to. Her debut album is definitely along the lines of manufactured pop, but her voice was incredible right out the gate. And now I'm making myself want to do a relisten, but it's almost 2 a.m., lol. (Technically Mi Reflejo is her second album, to me it felt like a Spanish extended version of her debut album, and it's also really good, even if I didn't understand most of the lyrics, lol. And then My Kind of Christmas is her third album, but is obviously a Christmas album, so that's why I think of Stripped as her second major album. I was a big Christina fan back in the day, obvs.)

See, I’ve always equated Bon Jovi’s “mistress” to be an analogy for the life on the road of a rockstar. The life is the mistress that was keeping him from his wife Dorothy, his HS sweetheart that he’s always been famously faithful to and is married to still. He felt guilty that his constant pursuit of music kept him from her. Also, sleeping on a bed of nails has always been a reference to punishment or an act of contrition to pay for sins.

This was actually used on the soundtrack of an adorable (but a tear jerker) “Bed of Roses” w/Christian Slater & Marisa Tomei (Teenage me watched it on repeat 🤣) other amazing & super famous songs: Blaze of Glory (another absolutely **epic** song from different soundtrack of hugely star studded cast of “Young Guns”), Living on a Prayer (I would be shocked if you’ve never heard it), It’s My life (rock anthem!), Wanted Dead or Alive, You Give Love a Bad Name, & I’ll be There For You (another ballad). So many great songs & a guaranteed good time at Karaoke. 🤣

I can’t resist…I was born & grew up in Long Beach. I was blessed to grow up there with so much amazing music. I actually have a weird one time connection with Bradley Nowell. We have the same tattoo artist. And when I was going to in to finish it there was this guy in the back with his dalmation smoking a J and picking at his guitar. I figured out who he was and fangirled but had to play it cool. He never said a word beyond hello & “that’s cool”. When he died a year later I was just about to see them in concert for first time. I was truly heartbroken…mid 90s were rough for Long Beach & Nor Cal folks…Tupac, Brad, & so many other amazing musicians we lost way too early.

I’m soooo glad y’all finally did Colder Weather! Song gives me goosebumps every time no matter how many times I listen. I played it for a friend once who didn’t much like country and it became one of his favorite songs of all time. When Terry said “I think that’s a perfect song” 🎯🎯🎯 Also, The House That Built Me is another exceptionally great song, but I also am biased because it hits home (literally) so much for me. My mom really did cut out pictures of houses for years while we rented all through my childhood, and we finally got her dream home when I was in the 8th grade. About 5 years ago my parents had to sell the house and before that, I’d been to the front door of houses we had lived in before just like she does in the song… when I said my final goodbye to “our” house that still is what I think of as “home,” I couldn’t get The House That Built Me out of my head. It was so therapeutic. 🩷🩷🩷

Aguilera was well recognized at the time, BUT, she and Britney Spears shared the limelight during the same period, including both stars in Disney Mickey Mouse Club together. Very interesting dynamic in the music world between them at that time. If u like reading drama, tabloid type stuff, they were the main topic for years. Aguilera wasn’t as desperate for the limelight and stepped back, didn’t allow herself to get as consumed by the music industry & tactics. Aguilera was/is amazing, absolute talent, & I appreciate she didn’t get destroyed by the industry.
