Canvas setup (sketch, layers & palette)
This is the starting point.
Here you can see the sketch, layer structure, and the color palette we’ll be using for this illustration.
Feel free to adjust the colors or simplify the sketch — this practice is all about comfort and freedom.
Northern lights background
For the northern lights background, I focused on soft color transitions and flow. Here are the brushes (Wet Brush 2 + Wet Blend Brush) I used to build the glowing sky and gentle movement of the light.
Work slowly and allow the colors to blend naturally.
Forest layer
On a new layer, I painted the forest of pine trees and gently softened parts of it. Slight blurring helps push the trees into the background and creates more depth, keeping the focus on the northern lights. I used Wet main Brush + Wet Blend Brush.
You don’t need sharp details here — soft edges work perfectly for this scene.
Snow layer above the trees
The final touch is the snow ✨ I added it on a separate layer above the trees, using Wet Brush 1 to create a light, airy snowfall effect.
This exercise is not about perfection — it’s about enjoying the process and building confidence through practice.
Take your time, make mistakes, and allow yourself to explore.
