So 5 days prior to this, Nagata got destroyed by Fedor at Inoki Bom Ba Ye.

Here's the recap from F4W: 13. Yuji Nagata beat Kensuke Sasaki. This was Sasaki’s return to New Japan after, yes, a wayward year in World Japan. For whatever reason, the crowd HATES him with an unbridled passion, and the heat for this was said to be unreal. Nagata, who was destroyed on New Year’s Eve, got the win clean via referee’s stoppage, so right there, two dudes, DEAD.

Jubs

Observer: Nagata beat Sasaki. This was the most heated, most like a fight and bloodiest match the company has had in a long time. Very 80s style, and in a good way. They just beat the hell out of each other. Both bladed, and Nagata bled a sick amount. If Nagata lost anything in the Fedor fight five days earlier, he got it back within seconds here because they tore the house down. Nagata got Sasaki in the mount, and kept head-butting his bloody forehead. Only negative is they went to a commercial at that point with Sasaki just about dead. When they came back, Nagata was covered in blood and Sasaki got near falls on him with a Northern lights bomb and powerslam. There were literally puddles on blood in the ring, and Nagata finished Sasaki with two high kicks and his new Nagata lock (kind of like an abdominal stretch only on the mat). Sasaki refused to tap, but eventually, not moving and covered in blood, the ref stopped it. This was a great match to show the value of using blood when blood is not a regular part of the promotion. ****.

Sometimes I rewatch this just to get the feeling back

I love MMA and I love wrestling, but something about this just makes me cringe

The Roastertaker

For anyone watching this now in 2025 the story from what I remember is that Sasaki had left with Choshu for WJ. When WJ dissolved and Sasaki ended up being a freelancer he'd return to NJPW I believe as either a heel or a tweener. Nagata who was loyal to NJPW at the time HATED Sasaki for leaving and thus this is the match

Sasaki one of the best Japanese wrestlers of all time. Classic match here

The Four Seven

Blood has typically never bothered me in the context of a wrestling match, but holy fuck this match changed that! HOW DID NEITHER OF THEM PASS OUT!?

Sampo Salo

This match fucks. I'v seen it many times and I'll never get tired of it.

I also recommend Togi Makabe vs. Yuji Nagata from 2007 for a future Watch This. That match is just as brutal as this one.

SavageOra

I must say, upon further reflection, I did indeed watch this.
