In this month's first Britainology, we interview the UK's only good columnist about his new book 'The Good Drinker: How I Learned to Love Drinking Less.' The book is available here from Profile Books.

However, rest assured that we talk about the book for about half of this interview, and the other half is a masterclass on process where we learn how Adrian comes up with columns such as 'I recently saw something in a petrol station toilet southbound on the M1 that I can never unsee.' Hope you enjoy!

Britainology really feels to me like a serious sociology podcast now. Conducting interviews and doing field research. Eventually one could see a Britainology research paper and a whole fledgling sub-field of Britainological research.

I welcome the drink, but only if it comes from the puddle.

All hail Adrain Chiles: the nation's lovable boomer dad

Thanks for having this conversation. It's really difficult to find any reasonable discussions of drinking without it being weirdly puritanical.

That 70% of drinkers are not problem stat, had no clue

Mr. Chiles, you will never read this reply, but I absolutely have a favourite spoon.

The lack of places to go as a kid does remind me rather painfully of how essential somewhere like a youth centre is for teens to socialise outside of family and school, where you don't have to drink. That's the third space for them, and it's heartbreaking when you think of how many were closed because they were considered by right wingers as "unnecessary" or a "waste of money". I grew up in my teens in a *very* rural area, and because the buses were shit and I couldn't drive, I kinda became a serious shut-in and I think it really affected my ability to socialise. It wasn't until I moved away to uni I felt I could come out of that shell of depression & loneliness I felt, and I could drink for the first time comfortably in a social setting.

Superb all-round. Not even in an ironic way. 👍
