For this month's first Britainology, Nate and Milo watched the first installment of the Up series, the 1964 mini-documentary SEVEN UP! Filmed as a commentary on Britain's class system and unintentionally becoming a time lapse of the Baby Boomers, it's still an absolute gem of British Pathé Voice, and much more. We hope you enjoy.

Let's see what happens in the 1970s! I think it'll be fine 🤞

For a second I thought this was about the soft drink 7Up, which my uncle insisted on pronouncing "Zup" for some reason

Goff Daddy69

absolutely want more of the Up series! I remember being told about it in like Psychology GCSE over a decade ago and was always v intrigued by it (but not enough to actually watch it)

Man, I Got Nothing

I remember watching UP in undergrad along with one of it’s American counterparts in the mid 2000’s. It also bring to mind the This American Life series about kids from a poor high school in the Bronx being bussed to Horace Mann Day School for special programs. The smart kids from the poor school immediately became disillusioned when they realized they couldn’t compete with the well-resourced rich kids.

The hogs demand The UP Series Miniseries Within a Miniseries

I oink hungrily at the thought of future slop

BarFly

I'd definitely like to hear more about later episodes of Up, especially as it moves into the 70s and 80s. I watched a few episodes of the series back in high school, and I remember my girlfriend at the time saying that Neil reminded her of me. Then, of course, Neil spiralled into depression and homelessness and then I think we stopped watching.

In the next instalment or the one after, Tony says “Good ol’ Enoch” with a cheeky wink and NO ONE EVER MENTIONS THIS. I had to rewind it several times to make sure.

More please!

Parts of the south island also get super hot in the summer. Central otago and Northern southland quite often get 38°c

János Fehér

I've been meaning to watch the series for a while so I'd love more episodes on it.

FunkyWeapon

Just adding my voice to wanting to hear more of this series! Mate going off script and telling anecdotes is also always appreciated :D

John Leavitt

Would love to have an Seven Up miniseries

etienne

yeah I mean you yourself perfectly laid down the groundwork on how this series could serve as a framing device to explain the live of the Boomer so ... you know what to do

Alex

I was at a pub earlier and heard the Blur song thats the intro for Britainology on the speaker and did a double take frantically thinking my phone was playing this out loud accidentally Also I would love to hear more about geezer Tony and his boomer friends

MM

Fluffythecruel

I would definitely enjoy more of these

Andrew Davis

Would you say one might call this series... Years and Years?

ArcticFridge

Keen for more exploration of this series

Whisky_Delta

Please do this whole cursed series

Oliver Cant

Matthew O'Reilly

Unanimous acclaim for Britainology Through Time

Lmaooo I was one of those kids repeating what their parents said in 2004... I would have been about 9, and my parents were Daily Show style liberals, so I would be getting into arguments with other kids about it. On the other hand, in 2000, my kindergarten class held a mock election for some reason, asking us to choose between Bush and Gore, and we all chose Bush because we could spell that word.

amanda / carapace shell 🐢

loyal hog logging on to say, "please do more of the UP series"; this was a fantastic episode

Harold Gottfried

It would be hard to do the whole series, but it would be interesting to cover because it does end up tracking a lot of political/cultural changes in Britain.

Ash Rose

Ultra Scotland would still have the original irn bru

Spencer Moore

Glad to have representation for me, the kid who was big for Ralph Nader.

Henry Curtis

this was really interesting, keep em coming

Edward Webb

Gimme more of this boomer dissection.

Fairest Booler

I remember my PC liberal teacher showing us clips of these in middle school to convince us that, after teaching us Howard Zinn-lite American history for 9 months and class doesn't determine success and if anything, Apted was a poor documentarian who tried in vain to guide it toward his pre-concieved conclusion.

Maggie

I knew abt/had seen a lot about the Up series before hearing this ep, and 100% would like to hear more via the Britainolory lens. I feel much less alone hearing the "British Pathe voice" interpretation layered with the "Boomer generation" interpretation.

Pedro Bento

100% would love to see a britanology series on the rest of the up series

DG

another vote for more in the Up vein
