Hi folks!

So, after some consideration, I'm thinking of changing how the shorts system works. Originally, it was supposed to be a quick fiction kind of thing where I write what I can for your prompts as quickly as I'm able - but as time has gone on, I've written more for each request, and the amount of requests has gone up and up. Sadly, it's gotten to the point where I can't reasonably manage the workload, and it's biting into the time I need for other projects.

I'm not keen on cutting down - I really do love doing these challenges - but I do have to face the fact that sadly, I'm only one man, and I can't keep this sort of workload up.

Thus, I've been thinking of how to go about this. I don't want to stop doing shorts, or take away benefits from you guys (and patreon makes it a nightmare to move tiers around anyway). So I've come up with the following options - and I'd like to know what you guys are in favor of.

Shorter Shots: Essentially, this option is to reduce the current shorts down to proper flash fiction levels, as they were originally envisioned. A few hundred words or paragraphs each, instead of whole stories. I'd still be trying to get these all done in a week, and they shouldn't be as much of a strain to write!

Limited Request Slots: For this option, I'd be making a more expensive limited tier for short story commissions of a few thousand words - likely no more than five slots. I'm a little hesitant to do this one since it's difficult on patreon to open up new slots, but I do still want to do longer (but not too long) commissions for people, so this might be a nice balance.

Both: Basically, do both.

Vote below for options you think would be a good idea, and maybe let me know your thoughts in the comments below! I won't be changing anything for how shorts will work this month (June), but I'll definitely be considering it for July.

i believe both would be best, as short are meant to be, well... short and having the option to be able to upgrade to a different tier that is for longer shorts is also a great idea! hopefully you're feeling a lot healthier than the previous months.

My suggestion is this have the shorts pool be something anyone from the tier can suggest. Then you pick x amount from that pool or even have a vote on which suggestions should be made into shorts. Then you can add a new limited request slot for those that want to be absolutely sure that their suggestion will get a story.

I vote doing a raffle each month. Give each story a number and then roll a set amount of numbers. You can announce ahead of time how many slots you’ll have and can change that number if you need to per month. Also it may be tedious but I do like each short getting it’s own post instead of one big post. Easier to find and reread shorts we like.

If you do change tiers I might suggest just making new tiers for the new short system and closing the current tier at the end of June. Maybe also have the Shorts request open earlier in the month to give yourself more time to work on them.

@Emmitt Cleveland I'm a bit uncomfortable at the idea of paying extra and only having a chance to receive benefits from it.

This was an idea that someone did suggest to me when I was first thinking about all this, but Patreon's rules explicitly forbid lotteries and raffles - they're too much like gambling, and thus illegal in some areas Patreon provides service to. Plus, as Eldomtom2 put it - I'm not comfortable with people paying me for the *chance* of getting something. Despite my gaming habits, I'm not trying to run a gacha ^^

I'm not sure about closing the current tiers - it's one of those things that sounds simple, but Patreon makes almost impossible to execute fairly. I'll look into it, but the likely plan is the current structure will remain, with a few tweaks to the wording. Moving the shorts to earlier in the month is something I've been considering though. I don't like how the current system requires people to be subscribed for two months to see the result of their request. Moving it up front to the second, or even first week of the month might be a more sensible system.

Yeah, I really want whatever changes I enact here to be fair to you guys, and raffles don't feel right (and are against the site rules anyway)

Thank you! Yeah, being suddenly blindsided by health issues was definitely the major thing that prompted me to look at how I was doing things. When I was on a roll, the current system worked... well, not perfectly, but it was okay. Having been interrupted though, now that I'm trying to get back into the saddle, it seems like the best time to be trying to improve things for long term sustainability.

Hm. I did actually use to run a system quite like this one. I might look into trying to adapt it for using again. It had its own share of problems, but those may have been fixable... I don't think that's a change I can implement for next month, but it's definitely an idea I can consider for further down the line!
