In this video, we react to Season 1: Episode 1 of Fellow Travelers, "You're Wonderful".

Bradam is back for another queer romance! A HIGHLY requested show, we are watching Fellow Travelers. We have been told to expect all the drama– lots of emotions, sex, passion and the like.

"Fellow Travelers" is a Showtime miniseries based on Thomas Mallon's novel, chronicling the tumultuous romance between Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer), a charismatic State Department official, and Timothy Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a young, religious man, navigating the McCarthy era and beyond, facing political persecution and personal struggles. 👔🤫

So...what did you think? Matt Boner and Jonathan Bailey are awesome in this one.

Steven Jump

This is one of the series that I was looking forward to your reaction. It's a heartbreaking story for sure. It wasn't a "speakeasy" that they went to it was a gay bar. These bars often paid protection to the police to stay open. Though the cops would raid them if they didn't pay them enough. The red light warning signal is where the term "Red Light Distract" comes from. Why are you blurring the sex scenes for Patreon? Youtube of coarse it will be needed.

IAmom

And here I am not wanting "that" edit ;0)

IAmom

Thanks for this reaction guys. Just be warned - this episode is nothing compared to what's coming - in every aspect...

Dionne Lakey

They're saying that gay people are dangerous to the government because they are susceptible to coercion. Basically because of homophobia, if a government official is discovered to be gay by a communist, they can be blackmailed into spying on the US for the communists. So that's their excuse for getting rid of suspected gay people from government. Instead of, you know, making it OK to be gay in the first place so it can't be used against their colleagues. The logic of the Lavender Scare is non-existent. It's just scapegoating. It's all too familiar in modern times.

Dionne Lakey

Yeah episode one is like a complete story. It's amazing how much they packed into that pilot episode. The nuance of Tim working for and hero worshipping McCarthy himself. The layers added to both main characters through their beliefs. What has to be done to survive as a queer person. It's such a rewatchable show too.

Dionne Lakey

Looking up the history of the real people in this story adds to the 'enjoyment' of the story. Who Roy Cohn is is really all one needs to do. Also how relevant he is to today's US politics. He is so infamous that the play/movie Angels In America includes him and the most recent movie about Trump, The Apprentice', has Jeremy Strong playing Roy Cohn. Fellow Travelers came out 15 months ago and has become more relevant to today every month since.

I love watching your videos but I may have to sit this one out. This show destroyed me when I watched it originally. 💔

Frances

Frontal? Weiner? Penis? Your comments crack me up 😂 Lets enjoy that cause there won’t be much laughter from now on…

Frances

Not „Boner“ 🙈🤣

Button

Hahahaha. I am amazed no one had caught it until now.

Dennis Verner

"Fellow traveler" in that era referred to someone who, perhaps, wasn't a communist themselves but who, maybe, sympathized with the politics. Of course, in this story it has a double meaning.

Richard Collette

ok, I can understand the censorship on You Tube but why are you censoring Patron. I't the reaction of you guys watching what we at home are watching and seeing the unedited version.

Samuel B

Anyone else immediately rewatch the episode after the reaction video to see the blurred out scenes? Just me? 😂

snallahej

Really glad you guys are watching this. It’s very important, especially now. With the current state of the us government, I could honestly see history repeating itself because people aren’t paying attention. Ron and this whole team created something so amazing. Yes, it can be a tough sit, and if you’re not comfortable with the steaminess, you may have to skip ahead a bit. But the writing, the acting, the visuals, the true stories that they’ve captured in this series are incredible. I’ve watched it soooooo many times and find something new every time. It took me two watches to catch that Mary became a senator, and it was blatantly stated in ep1! 🤦‍♀️ But I hope you stick with it, and consider learning the real history behind it. Last thought: the look on Hawk’s face in the SF diner makes me of how not quite teens celebrate stories like heartstopper and young royals. It’s wonderful to see how far we’ve come (in some countries anyway). But it’s so fragile. And if we don’t celebrate the wins and normalize queer stories, some folks will choose to other-ize and demonize our community will we just want to live and love. 💜💜💜

Ellie

Sooo sooo GLAD you are watching this, this series is soo IMPORTANT to queer culture and should be ACKNOWLEDGED always! Soo glad we got to see this in our lifetime , especially for us who are younger and never had to LIVE thru this era, it’s soo important to us for understanding where things have been & how FAR we ve come ! You are in for an emotional YET important ride! Buckle up, you are about to FALL in LOVE with them BOTH 🥹😍❤️🙏

Ellie

I agree, why is there censorship on PATREON? Did I miss the reason as I was just as surprised as you! 🫶🙏

Michael

You blurred out the best bits! BOOHOO! I want a rebate! 🤤

Richard Collette

I'm really glad to see that I'm not the only one that feels a bit ripped off with the censoring. We go to Patron because of the censorship that You Tube imposes on us. OK enough said on that. Fellow Travelers will explain the Lavender Scare of the 1950's. I was only like 2 y/o at that time. I'm old enough , 72 , to be everyone's grandfather on this site,I think? I grew up in the 60's and being labeled gay was a sentence that would haunt you for decades. Fellow Travelers is blunt, raw and real and the sex scene between Matt and Johnathan are the icing on the cake. And I really like the icing on this cake. I'm just honest. :)

Richard Collette

unfortunately our young gay generation may ( WILL) see this coming back. I hate whats going on and makes me sad that dudes like Bradly and Adam may experience a form of Fellow Travelers.

Enthrall-2024

In this show, there are beautiful moments (with nudity) and other sexual elements that advance the narrative. One scene I would have preferred blurred. The choice is yours.

Bradam Reacts

Oh VERY interesting... we've done some research before diving into Episode 2 because there were lots of pieces we felt we were missing and we wanted to understand the full scope of what was going on in DC around this time. It's sad how poorly and shallowly topics like the Lavender Scare were taught in schools :/

Bradam Reacts

Sorry guys!! We were trying to decide if it was best just in case we had some minors on the channel, looking back we realize we'll just make sure to mark episodes with (graphic) nudity as 18+ and leave those things in! Thank you for your understanding ❤️

Bradam Reacts

I think Adam and I rewound the scene one too many times 🤣 LOLL

Bradam Reacts

We are so excited to use our channel to boost stories like these being produced. We find queer stories like these heartbreaking but so powerful, like you said, in times like these. We want to use what voice we have to make sure everyone is aware that this content exists and is out their to teach and inspire! We have some research to do before diving into the second episode... I need to do some digging into Roy Cohn and more about how the Lavender/Red Scare intertwined. This show is very different than HS and YR's and we couldn't be happier to tune in 💜

Bradam Reacts

These stories are important, then, now and forever!! We're so so excited to learn more, and fill in the gaps that we were not taught throughout school. Can't wait to boost the voices that made this show and the story and history it's about.

Bradam Reacts

Matt and Jonathan together in scenes like THAT... there will be no looking away... in fact there may be frequent rewatches 🤣 we apologize for the censorship!! We wanted to be wary of any minors who are in our Patreon but we realized that might've not been too necessary. Going forward there will be no censorship!! We'll make sure they're just marked if there's graphic nudity. 🫶🏼 Thanks for always understanding :)

Bradam Reacts

Oh my gosh, your insight has me doing research before starting episode 2. It's clear there are so many gaps in my knowledge regarding this time, specifically with what was going on in the government and around DC. It's unfortunate how poorly these things were taught in schools. It's become clear why history may repeat itself. I'm so excited to learn more.

Bradam Reacts

Matt Boner feels like the perfect auto correct mistake.

Bradam Reacts

Oh I remember learning about these! I just assumed it was a known safe-space for queer people, I forgot that bars like this existed thank you for letting us know!! We apologize for the censored scene, we thought it may be smart in case of minors in our Patreon- we realize that that wasn't the best decision and will just be marking videos with graphic nudity going forward as 18+ and keeping the scenes!! Thank you for understanding ❤️

Dionne Lakey

Also, just like the Red Scare/McCarthyism, if you suspected someone was a communist you could just point to them and shout communist and the authorities would contrive some way to make you guilty, blacklist and arrest you. It's the reason why the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller (starring Winona Ryder in the movie version) was written at that time. In that case people were calling people witches who they had a grievance with and they were put to death. It's why we call this kind of thing a witch hunt.

Richard Collette

I'm afraid of whats coming. You guys offer a sanctuary to escape from amarican reality.

Scott aka Blue62

Guys, thanks so much for reacting to this important series! I really enjoyed your YR reactions on YouTube and once I saw that you were doing FT I had to sign up here to see you react to the full episodes of this. I wasn't around in the 50's, but I'm an older gay man (62) and I think it's essential that younger people, especially LGBTQ people, watch shows like this that teach about our queer history. This show is well-written, well-acted, beautifully shot and will tear your hearts out, but it is so worth it.

Anastacia

I’m so excited for this but also not prepared to rewatch this series bc it’s emotional

Tara

Ooph, this episode is A LOT, this whole series is a lot. YR is a very emotional in a different way but FT is probably the most emotional show I’ve ever watched.

Jenny

I love this show so much

K BF

what did we just watch????

Alexandra Trojanowski

I hate that google and Patreon lose my TxanGoddess YouTube handle, but it is what it is. I am so late, but I utterly love how teasing Hawk is their first time together. The look of joy on his face at corrupting Tim is delicious! But it’s really a perfect premiere. We learn every thing we need to know about nearly all the mains by the time it ends; from Tim’s conscientiousness to Hawk’s total amorality.

Moon Sam

Just started watching this series today as part of my Pride Month watchlist, and it's incredibly satisfying to immediately come here and watch your reaction moments after witnessing it for myself first. It's so good already! 💙

I'm thinking about the contrast between this and "Heated Rivalry". They are completely different shows, of course, and both are amazing: I'm not interested in pitting them "against" each other. But as a gay man who grew up in the 80's and 90's, there is one thing that jumps out at me when I think of them side-by-side: THIS (Fellow Travelers) is the kind of show I'm used to, that I've been trained to expect. Desolate, heart-breaking even when hopeful, reminders of how awful things have been. I grew up with Torch Song Trilogy, My Beautiful Laundrette, My Own Private Idaho, Longtime Companion. Even movies that were ultimately campy and fun, like To Wong Foo or Priscilla Queen of the Desert, had to have tragic and even violent confrontations to remind us that the world isn't safe. Those movies were and are important, and still deserve to be highlighted in a society that is increasingly becoming more dangerous for us again,... BUT: "Heated Rivalry" is new because it allows us to see a representation of queer joy that isn't rooted in horror and tragedy. It allows us to see on the screen a love story that doesn't mask the reality of being queer in the world but that doesn't fetishize the trauma of it, either. I'm grateful of this show and all of the shows like it, but watching this again NOW has let me appreciate with more clarity than ever before why Heated Rivalry feels so intensely refreshing and new.

Randy Thompson

Why did you blur the sex scene. I thought that you would no blur it. Is this going to be for rest of series. If it is what are we paying for.

Bradam Reacts

i believe we only blurred them in this episode! we were originally worried we had minors and this was the first show we reacted to that had graphic depictions of sex! we learned our lesson after this episode that it’s okay to show it!!
