In this video, we react to Episode 2 of Fellow Travelers, "Bulletproof".

Bradam is back for another queer romance! A HIGHLY requested show, we are watching Fellow Travelers. We have been told to expect all the drama– lots of emotions, sex, passion and the like.

"Fellow Travelers" is a Showtime miniseries based on Thomas Mallon's novel, chronicling the tumultuous romance between Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer), a charismatic State Department official, and Timothy Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a young, religious man, navigating the McCarthy era and beyond, facing political persecution and personal struggles. 👔🤫

I’m exited to go through this show again. I think I binged it so fast that I missed so many things. And that I connect to Tim’s character a little. Raised in a religious home and battled for a long time how to reconcile that with also being gay (bawled my eyes out at the last episodes scene with Tim ‘confessing’ to the priest) and I am very much a get to know you, cuddles on the couch, want to make a life together and I seem to keep finding guys a little too much like Hawk 😂. Such a great idea for a show during such momental periods for gay people (lavender scare and the AIDS epidemic of the 80s). Great show. I just need them to start making happier shows for us gays 😂

Ok. I wasn't going to watch this through again, but your reactions have dragged me back in despite my broken heart.

This episode was beautifully done and also completely devastating. By the final scenes, with Marcus reciting the Langston Hughes poem to Frankie, with Mary sobbing on the bed, with Hawk at Tim's place and Tim's body breaking down from AIDS...let's just say I was a mess by the end of it. Other great scenes in this episode were the party and, of course, when Hawk told his father to fuck off. As you said, Hawk is brutal and he is indeed scary when he senses he needs to go into survival mode. Tim is kind and a dreamer, but so much of a dreamer that he could be seduced by the evils of McCarthyism and couldn't see that his religion was forcing him to deny his humanity. (Ditto Luis, on that count...and I can relate, being raised Catholic.) Another fantastic reaction, guys, thank you.

i’ve rewatched this series a number of times now… which episode i start crying on is directly related to how close i am to my period… i was sobbing watching this today, episode 2 might be a record haha

I love what intelligent viewers you are.

Dionne Lakey

The Langston Hughes poem at the end when he talks about children being victims of capitalist violence and how there'll be no statue to them but we'll remember them....I hate how relevant that poem is today and always I guess.

Just to note that the Cosy Club that is the underground gay club they go to, is a Black gay club that allowed white gays to attend. Marcus's comment that he isn't even safe from white people in Black spaces was about that. How he hates that they're integrated but only one way. I love Marcus and Hawk's interactions and how they compare as characters in the show.

Did not pick up on it being a black bar!! This makes that interaction make all the more sense! Thank you 😌

Dionne Lakey

Also in the previous episode the Black bar man tells Hawk and Tim the rules about putting 12 inches of space between them when the red light goes off, and then tells Marcus he's responsible for them.

I think it was also soo important what you guys noted in the things people HAD to DO for SURVIVAL back then🙏…it’s an important observation cause it’s soo EASY for us now as queers in this time to overlook that and be quick to judge in thinking there is no way we would do such things( like the letter she writes & pretty much denies her lover),it’s heartbreaking in itself💔 but we also have to have empathy and grace for how difficult it was living as a queer person during this time. Another reason WHY THIS STORY is soo important to US NOW, and fellow travellers tells it all soo beautifully in EVERY SCENE & character. Marcus’s story is just as VITAL to the story as a whole, viewing it from not only trans culture & drag but also thru the eyes of POC & BLACKs during the SAME period! With that in mind, I will also say this , go lightly on Hawk😉, he isnt perfect but his character is sooo FASCINATING & full of nuances , he might JUST surprise you🙏. Another thing to also keep in mind is this story SPANS 4 DECADES, there is ALOT left to unpack in the next 6 eps, am soo EXCITED to go thru this joubey with you both!! ❤️

Came for YR, still staying for FT. It's super interesting to hear your thoughts about the events in the show, especially reflecting it on your own life and the political environment in the US at the moment. This is a good time to watch this show and remember how far we came and how fast we are going back, if allowed. And how suddenly the Red Scare is more like Sucking The Red, while nowadays it's not about communism, it's about the conservative far-right movement in Russia.

Omg I've just started watching this. Halfway thru episode 2 I just know I'm going to be sobbing 😭. Im 65 and got married had kids bcs I was too scared tell anyone I was queer. My adult kids still don't know even tho I've been away from their dad over 30yrs and stayed single as couldn't tell them. But omg my life compared to back then is a bed of roses. I want to watch the rest but it's heartbreaking enough as is but compelling I can't stop 😭

Jenny

I need episode three stat 😂

Tara

Ugh... there's a reason why I've only seen this show twice.... it's HEARTBREAKING. I'm scared..... but in it for the long haul with you guys. 😔

I know I’m late so I’ll hold most thoughts until the finale. Still it’s fun watching your reactions in the moment. Bradley’s comment about San Francisco being cute caught my attention here. Unfortunately, the street scene where Hawk approaches Tim’s 1980’s apartment didn’t happen in SF. The series was shot in Ontario, principally Toronto and Hamilton. Probably wouldn’t be spotted by anyone not intimately familiar with SF. But my husband and I have called the city home since 1995 so I guess we qualify.

Sarah

“That’s why he’s apologizing to his dad, he beat him at tennis.” This was such a good comedic moment 🤣
