In this video, we react to the fifth episode of Netflix's new dramedy, Boots! Enjoy our reaction to Episode 5: "Bullseye".

What do you get when the Marines meets closeted queer? Well, Boots, of course.

We're so excited to be reacting to this Netflix show directed by Phil Abraham, Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Silas Howard, Peter Hoar and Tanya Hamilton, starring the likes of Miles Heizer, Max Parker, Vera Farmiga, and Liam Oh.

Bullied gay teen Cameron (Miles Heizier) joins the Marine Corps with his best friend Ray (Liam Oh) despite risks. In boot camp, they experience profound personal change amid danger, as their platoon confronts both literal and figurative landmines.

We hope you enjoy this reaction! Stay tuned for the next episode. 🪖🏳️‍🌈

Drill Sergeant Sullivan coaching our boy: Relax, breathe, don't be afraid of the pain.... Somehow I think firing a rifle isn't the only time he's given that speech to a guy. lol

Kamala Harris 🇺🇸 🤣🤣🤣

As a “media enthusiast” I’ve been waiting with baited breath for this ep react 😍😍

I really enjoyed McKinnon in this episode. He is a great mentor and father figure that men like these need. Speaking to your commentary at the end, it's a shame that some men only encounter mentors like these in these institutions. But you will find good leaders and brotherhood in these places and that is what they take advantage of the most. People's need for community and guidance whatever their background. An actually financed social structure, with housing, meals, pay, education. All you have to do to get it is learn how to kill another human being efficiently. No thought to maybe just providing these basic needs and conditions to society at large without this transactional process.

ilian

It's honestly so much funnier to imagine that every time they say "kill" they are basically saying "slay"

Poor Ochoa! I knew it was going to be a Jody situation as soon as he won the call home.

As gay and black veteran I can speak from experience and say It really is a mindfck to serve and not feel fully accepted by your country. That’s why I encourage everyone to get whatever you can out of service and consider it reparations. lol. I’m so happy under Obama trans soldiers were able to get their gender affirming care covered… while it lasted and I hope they’re able to get disability benefits after being kicked out by the clown in office now.

I think some people have a hard time understanding why Ray is angry, but i definitely understand why he'd be pissed that his friend made him think that the racist asshole who hatecrimed him was still on his ass and that he still had to be worried about being victimised by him, I'd be pissed too I think some people including Cam forget the racialised violence involved in this situation and that is generally present in the military

Ochoa's death was so obvious since episode 1... he was the only one overtly positive and always full of light.. they were building him up so much to make him loved.. because they were gonna WRECK US !

Stefan

»I knew he was getting sashayed away …  I just didn't think it was permanently« 😅😅😅 ADAMMMMM!!

I was so surprised when they kept saying that Cameron was in the right and Ray has no reason to be angry. I think anyone would be furious if they found out that their supposed best friend conspired with a group of people behind their back to manipulate them and bait them into thinking the racist who attacked them coordinated another attack against their group (you can see Ray's whole face change when it goes from 'someone stole our toilet paper' to 'the guy who hate-crimed me and tried to come back for more that episode was the one who attacked us'. And Cameron is the one who said that to his face.). Of course he's angry and has reason to be. They both said some hurtful things during the fight, but acting like Ray is just being a baby is wild. I think this is another event that shows to us just how young, naïve, and immature Cameron is that he thought that this was a good plan and that Ray wouldn't find out about it (in this environment, of course he would). A reminder that these are literal teenagers in this situation.

Anniina

Poor Ochoa🥺💔 I love your reactions, I need all of your reactions to the rest of the episodes now!!😩🩷

I liked this show so much more than I thought I would. I also have shifted a bit in how I regard people who sign up for military duty: this show has empathy for almost all of its characters and also shows how powerful and necessary the bonding can feel for young men. It also doesn't shy away from the problematic parts of both characters and the military system. And Ochoa was one I felt for most... then this. I look forward to seeing how this shifts the characters.

Bradam Reacts

It was interesting to watch the episode shift to him before "writing him off" 😬 it was a very forward way of saying: here is this person, very likable and sweet who is doing it for someone else and then he's completely wronged and died. It's a black and white tale to literally say- have empathy for all of the characters. You never know what someone is going through!

Anniina

🤩🤩

Bradam Reacts

literally the moment they panned to him in this episode I was like oohhhhhhh it's over 😭

CG

And some of them are there for noble reasons, some for naive reasons, some for chaos and some for self-preservation. I like that take on it; and I also like how some characters seem to be actually growing from the experience while others seem sacrificed by their intentions

Bradam Reacts

I think the reason we were surprised Ray was so upset is because it seemed like such a genuine effort to get back at him for Ray. Like the plan wasn't involving Ray in any way or putting him in harms way. We DID, however, understand that Ray had every right to be mad at Cope for lying straight to his face, especially when cope probably deep down knew Ray wouldn't have been a fan of the plan in the first place. It's such a good way to depict that lots of these men are still "boys". It was such a high school, low-stakes stunt, which I think was smart to offer a juxtaposition between like this and war 😭 and that these are the people being recruited every day for something VERY serious. They're just friends looking out for one another but we're watching their relationship be tested back and forth and I think the anger also comes from the "honor man" stuff and the squad leader situation. It's been such a fun watch!!!!

Bradam Reacts

REPARATIONSSSS HAHA And you'd be right!!! If you're going to serve for your country, use and abuse the resources they offer while you're enlisted (and after) for your benefit! It's part of your pay and your reward!! It can be a reformation program, it can keep you from addiction, it offers housing and pay, and it offers benefits and pays for schooling, etc.

Alexandra Trojanowski

Preach! Most people have no idea how much President Obama did for the military! Huge expansion of the VA budget, expansion of the GI Bill for dependents, back dating certain benefits to 9/11/01, tax credits to hiring businesses for veterans …. it’s a really long list! And some of it was fast, which was good since he only had the house and senate early on too. My military sister was quite pleased at the time.

Bradam Reacts

that lapel pin and that FIERCE pantsuit has ms. harris written all over it

Bradam Reacts

...how do I pin this... and why did this give me butterflies... okay signing out.

Tonie W

As person of color myself, I get what you're saying about the racial violence Ray experienced. I still was annoyed with the way Ray reacted to Cameron. I feel like his reaction was so much, because Ray didn't think Cameron would do well in bootcamp. Some of what Cameron said to Ray has some truth to it. Cameron is doing better in bootcamp than Ray. I feel like Ray thought he was the one that was going to shine. He didn't think his friend who is gay and was bullied all their life was going to succeed. Ray did not have insinuate that about Cameron and Sullivan.

CG

Cameron: Shantay you stay.

CG

It's a big one.

Enrico

Such a sad episode, I felt very sorry for Ochoa; he clearly had some underlying medical condition. In the bathroom scene, he tells Cameron he'd been in pain before. The recoil from the rifle shots hitting his shoulder and chest, combined with the stress of the phone call to his wife, likely caused the heart attack.

Mark Edwards

This one traumatized me despite all the foreshadowing. Definitely contrasts with the feel good conclusion of E4.

ROM HEADLINER

Can yall wear camouflage on final episode of boots?

Bradam Reacts

very interesting point about the recoil and his body!!! probably threw his heart rhythm through a loop

Bradam Reacts

HONEY… get the credit card. We’re going to get our fatigues for the finale.

Nicole

The pledge to the riffles is insaneee

JustinThyme

Great review. I felt so bad how you were talking about thus show and how light and funny it is knowing what was coming in this episode. Your reaction to Ochoa’s phone call was correct and the shock after that is just so hard to watch. Great comments at the end, too!
