In this video, we react to the sixth episode of Netflix's new dramedy, Boots! Enjoy our reaction to Episode 6: "The Things We Carry".

What do you get when the Marines meets closeted queer? Well, Boots, of course.

We're so excited to be reacting to this Netflix show directed by Phil Abraham, Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Silas Howard, Peter Hoar and Tanya Hamilton, starring the likes of Miles Heizer, Max Parker, Vera Farmiga, and Liam Oh.

Bullied gay teen Cameron (Miles Heizier) joins the Marine Corps with his best friend Ray (Liam Oh) despite risks. In boot camp, they experience profound personal change amid danger, as their platoon confronts both literal and figurative landmines.

We hope you enjoy this reaction! Stay tuned for the next episode. 🪖🏳️‍🌈

loved seeing Sullivan's backstory in this episode. really sad though.

Yes, everyone in basic training talks about something being put in our food or drinks to keep us from getting erections. I think it was week 6 or 7 that things finally started working down there and I was a gay man surrounded by attractive men 24/7.

Robert W

I still feel Boots is more about Cam and Sullivan choosing to be closeted for the sake of the military and not about internalized homophobia. I don’t think Cam believes his weakness is his gayness but instead being the kid who got bullied in school.

THANK YOU BRADLEY AND ADAM

Anniina

Loved your reaction once again!

Fred Ferraro

I would think it’s just the stress and exhaustion that’s keeping it from happening.

Irene

I think this episode was my favorite episode of the season. Great reaction!

The whole "kill your old self" idea has me pretty thoughtful, because I didn't really see it as necessarily negative. (I think you commented about it being "indoctrination" that was taking hold of him, or something along those lines?) But on its own that idea can mean a whole bunch of things, not just the "kill off my old gay thoughts" angle that immediately comes to mind. He could internalize it as meaning "kill off the old me who is fearful" for example. We'll see how it goes, of course, but at least at this stage I don't think it's necessarily bad for him to be internalizing the idea of killing off the 'old self' ... it all depends on who then is able to have room to emerge.

I do hope that there will be more of a message of "killing the weakness" more than watching Cameron experience "killing the gay/femininity/true self" !! Like he'll become "more of a man" by embracing who he is through bootcamp whether or not he stays or defects. It'll be interesting to see what the show does with what it has in the last two episodes!

I also, personally, think there'd an intimidation factor on my end that would keep the ole wood down 😭 I'd be too scared and in my head- it wouldn't MATTER what would happen in those first few weeks I think I'd be just uncomfortable enough that it wouldn't do it for me. When it comes to everyone else idk, but everyone is out of their comfort zone and working thru things at bootcamp- but it wouldn't be the craziest thing ever if they were doing something like that 😭

the way i LOVE watching you two react to things. Brads dancing to the outro song lmao.

This show has been criticized for glorifying military life. I have said this before, but I don't think it really does that. It does a good job of showing the allure, but in a subtle way it also shows the price paid. This episode was so powerful because of that. It showed some of the positive things that had happened to Cameron because of being there, while also not pulling punches about Sullivan and Wilkinson. It kind of blows my mind how this show makes me angry at characters one moment, then makes me feel real empathy for them the next. And with Sullivan at the end I actually felt both at the same time. I was so angry at him for denying the love and using that word, but also was heartbroken for him that the situation made him feel it was the only option. He had to deny his true feelings and completely blow up what would seem to be a love story due to, as McKinnon said, some f***** up priorities in the military

This episode took me from liking to loving the series. So many prior threads coming together. And the details perfectly done as you both observed. For me, the music also played a huge role punctuating key scenes. While Sullivan runs to the beach mentally leaving Wilkinson for example, New Order’s “Elegia” underlines his mourning even if you’re not an 80s club kid who immediately recognizes it.

Great reaction! I tried to guess if your video image was from one of the Sullivan gay scenes, but I think it was from the food fight. Either way, love how you both really get into the story!

CG

I SO disagree with the idea of killing your old self. Why? Is there nothing worth saving? The people I know who talk about this in their own lives tend to throw the proverbial baby out with the bath water.

CG

I think Sullivan has internalized homophobia... Cameron less so. And yeah, both are caught in a system of oppression

@CGinSpace I understand what you mean, and know some people who fall into that category that you're describing! On the other hand, I also know some people for whom the "death-and-rebirth" metaphor is incredibly motivating, helping them to let go of past bad habits or shame. In the end, like most metaphors, I suppose it depends on exactly how each individual interprets it. Just like some of those sayings like "live every day as if it's your last!" -- it can be a helpful mindset for some, or a catastrophic one for others. ;-) LOL

I would absolutely agree! As we’ve been watching i’ve been quite surprised about lots of the critiques i’ve seen about the show glorifying the military/bootcamp/marines… Now I have no idea what it’s like in bootcamp, but lots of comments of people sharing their own experiences on our videos makes it sound at least fairly accurate- and in no way does the depiction make me want to be in the military ANY more than I did before AND has pointed out more problems than I even realized 😭 It’s shedding a light on it in a way I think is very respectable because it feels like “this is what happened if you were gay in the marines” yes it sucked but people found the good and came out strong but by NO means do I feel like it’s an unfair and good look on the marines. I feel like the ‘Top Gun’s movies “glorified” the service WAYYY more. I could argue it’s propaganda even but i’ll hold my tongue LOLLLL I can maybe see people feeling like because it’s showing peoples backgrounds and why they are there allows us to feel more empathy for the recruits and the people in the military but we SHOULD feel empathy for them! I also think that if the current administration in America isn’t a fan of the depiction then it’s probably doing something right 🙂‍↕️

CG

I honestly think that a lot of the reason some people don't like it is that it wasn't what they wanted it to be. I can understand that. I think a part of me wanted it to be a real burn on the military. What I have found, however, is that this more balanced approach is much more effective. I am finding that I have more compassion for why people join the military, but I also feel that the criticism lands a lot more heavily when we can feel compassion for all the players. I also love that. It makes me understand some of my own biases and privileges. Overall, I think the criticism that this has resonates a lot more because of its greater compassion for the characters, as well as its willingness to show that not all of what the military has to offer is violent and horrifying.

Thanks guys for your reaction. When we see what happened with Sullivan in Guam, to what an extent his fear led him to betray Wilkinson, it's easy to understand how inhumane and ultimately stupid the Pentagon policy was ay the time. We all know that Don't Ask Don't Tell, that would come in three years later, was still bad in many ways, and fortunately it's been mow gone too, but that old policy was the absolute worse. Ready for the next two episodes! ❤️

I got it right!🙌🏻🙌🏻

@baydreamer

Hearing Sade in this episode took me back to the 80's when my ex was active duty Navy, and I used to listen to Sade and Anita Baker constantly. Funny enough, we almost got sent to Naval Base Guam but instead we were sent to NAVSTA Rota, Spain.
