the thing I love about this movie is that (you're right) the devil showed him that Alison and him were not meant to be, she also showed him that the people (his office coworkers) that he was so desperately wanting acceptance from were fake and didn't really want to know him. No matter who he was or what he had, they would never be the type of friends that he needed or wanted. Also she showed him that he was fine just the way he was, he didn't need to be rich, sensitive, smart, athletic, and noble. He was all of those things (we technically don't know what his bank account was but I imagine since he was alone and had expensive sound systems, he was comfortable financially). one last thing and it might be a reach but again movies are art and are open to interpretation. If I were to look at it from a truly biblical view (I'm not religious but I like the stories). God had a hand in this as well. Remember the devil has no power other than what God allows her (in this case) to do. Elliot being so desperate and lonely (which can be very dangerous to himself) God saw this and let the devil tempt him (think about it, why would she have that clause in her contract unless god told her to put it in there or it wouldn't be fair) and yes he fell for it (again desperate and lonely dangerous). When he finally went to God for help. He came and told him what he needed to hear. Which made him realize that he didn't need anything. He was alright just the way he was. Now it's easy for someone to turn to God when in crisis, but when the devil went dark and evil. That was the devil trying to prove to God that he didn't mean anything he said. Then he made his wish for Allison. Which proved he had learned and grew from those experiences. The devil even said she really liked him at the end which confirms he never needed to change. Loved your reaction brothers as always.
