Here's a hotfix for version 1.12.2. (Patreon)

The hotfix addresses an issue that prevented you from swallowing villagers and indeed any mob with its own menu and also fixes a bug where a swallowed villager would release its own victim before being swallowed itself, now, it continues digesting while being digested.
