I cannot recall exactly how old the Hutt species can get, but i think i read recently that Jabba the Hutts own mother is over a thousand years old so they can get VERY old, as for how great/powerful Jabba is. He is very powerful just not himself physically. (fun fact, there has only ever been one force sensitive Hutt in all of the Star Wars timeline, he was a Jedi and is the only Hutt who was force sensitive, there are theories that since the Hutts are so greedy and manipulative by nature, yet also physically very slow and weak in combat neither the light side nor the dark side favors the species much in terms of granting force sensitivity) Jabba however has not only vast armies of fleets and mercenaries at his command, but also controls a lot of Hutt space and resources that are nearly infinite. The hutt cartel/family combined holds more resources and money than all of the republic together, but because it is split between the Hutt cartel leaders it cannot rival the economy of the republic or the CIS (or later the empire) A long time ago The Hutts actually ruled all of the galaxy. (this time period is known as the empire of the Hutts) they ruled the galaxy and the other species, but their empire fell when the Hutts started to wage war against each other for new personal conquest. (another fun fact, While we almost never hear The Hutt species speak anything but their native language, they are all capable of speaking the common tongue, but due to their ancestral glory they feel they are above the common language and thus prefers to use their own language even if it means a translator droid is needed)

At this point Anakin is a Jedi Knight and can take on a Padawan. Traditionally in order to become a Jedi Master you have to train a Padawan up to Jedi Knight.
