UBoom X - final outdoor test (Patreon)
Content
This is my final test before sending my values to Earfun for a new firmware. I had readjusted all 3 outdoor modes to allow for a cleaner playback at high levels but I didn’t push maximum possible volume as much anymore as in my previous videos to get the sound cleaner although I still cannot guarantee it to remain 100% distortion free but I think distortion is held quite well under control now. The Partybox doesn’t always play clean either and I am not even talking about most other speakers from VIFA, Klipsch etc (or Bose haha) which can all be brought into distortion if pushed with harder recordings at maximum volume.
I set compression differently for all 3 modes simply to also allow for different “characters” with each mode. This way they will all sound slightly different and offer a different bass rendering at maximum volume due to differently set crossover frequency for the low frequency compressor band.
The cleanest mode should be the outdoor mode which wasn’t demonstrated that much yet. But as it’s not as heavily bass boosted like the other modes while still offering a decent amount of bass it remains more controlled with less compression.
There may still be a bit of crackling at maximum volume with some recordings which you can also hear in this video during some parts, but usually it’s enough to reduce volume just 1-2 steps, the speaker won’t become that much softer then but the playback should become simply cleaner.
I will just need to get out again today for a last check and maybe add another dB to the outdoor mode as well to make it the most universal setting with even the highest possible loudness but not as exaggerated sounding as the others.
I am still not sure if I shouldn’t rename “insane” into something like ground 0 to indicate its purpose for rather some ground placement. It’s not that insane to be honest when looking at the bass boost levels of some other speakers. If you have some idea for a better name please let me know.
All other modes should remain like they were: studio, indoor and indoor+ for indoor use and outdoor, ground 0 and BOOM xxX for outdoor use (those sound really funny indoors). I am still deliberating if I shouldn’t also add an outdoor 3d or outdoor stage mode which simply has surround enabled for a more open sound even outdoors even though it may cause more distortion at high levels it could offer some improvement at levels slightly below maximum. Please let me know if such an option would be interesting for you.
Please also let me know your opinion about the current result here and if you have some other suggestions I could maybe still correct for, but honestly I am already pushing it a bit at the limit and I doubt I can make it any louder or cleaner without having the access to dynamic adjustments. With a global compressor setting for the entire volume range it’s close to impossible to squeeze out even more.
I also want to check the indoor modes again for issues at maximum volume and then I should expect a new firmware from Earfun within some days. When the Boombox 3 from Thomas will arrive I will immediately try shooting some video of these 2.
Unfortunately towards the end of the video my audio recorder got out of memory and stopped recording therefore I had to switch to the camera mic with worse quality but I think most has been already shown before, I mostly just played some bass drums at the end to hear how these were rendered on all 3 speakers.
