I had shot this last week for the public but was not that satisfied with the result. In the meantime I finally got the app with all my settings and went out again to shoot another video against the Boombox which will probably replace this. I would like to share this video here with you anyhow simply to not raise any false hopes as the UBoom X cannot replace a Boombox 3 if one is after the strongest bass and highest loudness. Depending on the mode the Earfun will play even louder with more bass than the Boombox but it won’t remain as controlled at high levels and can distort with particular recordings while the JBL should remain perfectly clean all the time.

I still prefer the Earfun for normal use if there is no need for highest levels. But I noticed that I need to redo some modes after having used the speaker outdoor now for some time. Outdoor mode becomes too uncontrolled at high levels as I had boosted bass even more afterwards with my latest setting. And I am not satisfied with ground O mode either as treble is compressed too much at high levels which kills the omnidirectional character somehow. I will try to boost treble even more and reduce treble compression and maybe base this setting on Boom xxx bass response instead of outdoor+ as this also tended to become a bit out of control at highest levels and was not loud enough.

The Boombox 3 still had potential to be louder than it is, but the engineers decided to still keep the 42hz bass up to maximum, thus resulting in its slightly honkiness character. I guess you're paying the extra bucks for keeping the cleanliness up to maximum, and wait for the next Boombox for incremental improvements (again). Already the mid-bass advantage from the UBoom X will definitely be more assertive and punchy, props to you Oluv for the Boom xxx mode. Personally I'll stick to outdoor+/ground O mode though, but hey Boom xxx is there to impress people I suppose (and to keep the complaints lol). Enjoy your vacation!

Boom xxX really surprised me, I prefer it to the Boombox at maximum and that 1-2 db loudness advantage really gives an impression of a better sound. Otherwise, outdoor plus mode surprised me at lower volumes in the beginning but Outdoor stage is imo a better name for that mode because the normal Outdoor seemed quite a bit more impressive at maximum which isn't what the name suggests...

I think there is enough settings to fool around. They all react differently to bass at high levels as I set compressor settings differently for most of them simply to allow for different characters also depending on the song etc. But with heavy tracks all of them can become a bit scratchy at maximum, I couldn’t avoid this. If I reduced bass more it would also be less at lower levels.

I wonder with all the outdoor modes battery life is gonna take a hit with how the hardware is pushed a lot, compared to let's say indoor modes or Earfun's default settings, but then again at high levels most speakers out there don't last long at max volume, still glad the UBoom X is USB-C charged

oluvsgadgets

It still drains battery even when attached to a power bank but I think you can prolong usage quite a bit like this. Still didn’t have the chance to do any proper battery life tests. I am waiting for the final production units to arrive then I can do some test

Most common powerbanks can output 5V 3A so this is lower than the UBoom X's fast charging input (20VDC 3A) (from the user manual) so its understandable that it still drains while plugged into the powerbank. According to some laptop charger specs, 20V 3A is roughly 60 watts. I wonder if there are mobile chargers out there that can output this amount.

oluvsgadgets

Could you please send me a link to such a powerful charger? I would like to try one out

Raelin Trenta

I can't find amazon links right now, but I know Anker has the 735 Nano II and their Prime series which has at least 65W. Anker and Ugreen are the more common ones in my country at least. Of course modern laptops with USB-C charging can have or exceed 65W chargers, my work laptop Dell Latitude 7420 charger outputs 90W for example.

I appreciate the tuning of the JBL tho, the speaker might not do whats advertised, but creates this referencing point that sorta forces budget companies to follow, and so prevent horrible upper bass tuning on and on. Against the earfun it holds on its own, obviously, but at what cost. I'd wonder what could be achieved if u had access to the tuning of the boombox so much more out it, i could think of.

do you want a high power charger, powerbank or both? for a powerbank i suggest this model: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0B7438Q2Z/ (INIU Power Bank, 100W 25000mAh Powerbank) it can output up to 100W, which is enough for most laptops and other demanding devices. there are 50% discount coupons regulary, so it is possible to get it for ~30€ which is a steal. the problem is, they are only active for a few hours. afaik the best chances are in the morning hours, especially on mondays. if you need a charger as well, message me. P.S.: you need a proper cable as well, this is capable of 100W: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B09MQ4KZ27/ without the right cable, it won't work.

The Boombox remained control because of it's passive radiators that allows it to play those lower notes and still control the excursions to prevent distortion and overdriving of the drivers. Overall great engineering from JBL. The only problem is the tuning, it could have been better if given the chance to tuned by people that into precision. Hardware wise it has lot of potential.

With some tracks the jbl is quite nice, but also somehow hollow at the same time, the earfun is the better alrounder and great for its price! Lets hope there will be a earfun partybox, then its game over for every speaker. But you did a great job. And your son is becoming a real man👍🏼 i have seen him from i think 2 years old or something, great he is learning english as well!

Enjoy your holiday Olaf🦀 take your rest and enjoy!

Hello 👋, it seems to me that the boombox 3 sounds more relaxed and the uboom x sounds more dynamic

Marcus Rother

yes. Very good choice. I can recommend that powerbank too. Because it is not clear which charging protocol is needed. It is possible that it needs a power delivery charger (PD) that supports programmable power supply (PPS) protocol as well. And this power bank has it, aand is pretty payable. You have to use a USB-C to USB-C cable that also supports 60W, or better 100W and 5A to be totally sure. An Anker cable (with that spec) is always a good choice.

Hi Oluv, JBL definitely goes lower on higher volumes, also vocals are more open (less honky). Uboom is a bit muffled with the higher bass boost and area 10kHz+ starts to be compressed and bit distorted. But we are speaking about volumes that are bit ridiculous with this sized speaker. Thanks

oluvsgadgets

I changed outdoor mode a bit and also ground O is now based on the Boom XXX bass as it was too uncontrolled with outdoor+ which it was based on before. I reduced treble compression for Ground O as it lost too much treble at high levels. Outdoor has less bass boost now and I pushed mids and treble more for high levels to make it the loudest mode yet still with less distortion than the others as bass is not boosted so much. I think like these all modes complement each other well, with outdoor+ offering the deepest and strongest bass which can lead into some distortion at high levels with really bassheavy recordings. Outdoor is the loudest but with less bass and boom xxx has the most bass and is nearly as loud as outdoor but can also scratch more due the strong bass.

Lukáš Bartošek

Yeah I think there will be mode for every occasion. Do you know if there will be an opportunity to tune the modes further by you after official release?

oluvsgadgets

No you can just change the default setting from Earfun. But even when boosted to max this won’t be as bassy and loud as mine

Mister 13

The Boombox 3 performs nicely outdoor but this lacking mid bass is obvious and it is costing too much for what it offers. The Uboom X fixed all those problems with Fuller bass, different modes and being so much cheaper

Alex

Uboom sounds great considering its price and size, but I also really like that lower bass from JBL. Yeah it's not natural but I like it. However, I wouldn't get the JBL for that price. It's too expensive

Boombox 3 have an ugly 700hz peak which makes it sounds hollow and „clear”
