I sad down the other day and did some further recordings of some other headphones I own, including the equalised HD58X which should sound more or less the same as the NH1 because this was used as reference for the NH1 tuning, but due to different impedance, openback/closed type etc and different interaction with the pinnae they won't sound exactly the same of course as you will hear next.

I also recorded the HD6XX, HD660S, HD800S and DT770/80Ohm just to give you some further idea about the sound signature I perceive from all these headphones. I also recorded 3 NH1 units to show you how big the difference between the 3 samples is, I left out the 4th sample as it sounds too different and I assume it to be defective. And to check the consistency of my recording I had to caputre the same unit the other day too and would like to show you how the same unit will sound recorded the 1st day, and the other day with the video above. There will be of course differences, depending on how precise I manage to place my microphones and how equal I manage to place the headphones, but you should hear the differences are rather minimal, although noticeable. Any slight position change of both headphone and microphones will have some impact on the final sound, therefore my current compensation is not 100% accurate, but some approximation only. I will try to fine tune it once I get my new microphones, then I will set down again with my KH80 and create a new compensation from scratch based on this and hopefully get my recordings even less colored. But the headphones will never sound 100% like the original recording as there are always dips which I usually don't correct for as these dips always vary between different headphones so I cannot correct for these dips globally.

Some may also have noticed that the NH1 appears slightly bassier than some of the other headphones. There is in fact some lower bass emphasis captured and measured below 30hz, but in real life I do not perceive it that strong like from the recording. I assume it may be some artefact due to the closed design and stronger bass resonance at the microphone with the enclosed air volume. I didn't correct for this because lowest frequencies are not that strongly perceived through headphones, most headphones roll off before even reaching any bass below 40hz, thus some boost at 30hz and below just adds a bit of thump, which IMO is still minimal from what I can hear in real life. With the NH1 and the neutral EQ I perceive the bass as flat but feelable to some degree, it has some tactile quality unlike with most other headphones which either are boomy, or lacking real bass. I simply think that the recording is not 100% correct in this case, and other closed headphones will probably also have bass captured slightly too loud.

Listening with HD58X and oluv settings, the recording 2 sounds better (smoother)

Hmm.. can you explain the differences, maybe we can both agree.

The 2nd is a bit better centered and upper mids sound a bit more natural, hearable from the snares.

recording 2 sounds great, rec 1 a bit coloured somehow
