I have been using the Charge 6 for a while now, got my latest one for 156€, which makes it 100€ cheaper than the Soundlink Plus. Although many reviews on YouTube favour the Bose and attest the Bose a better more serious sound, this is complete bullshit like shown in JOY‘s video: https://youtu.be/tm7plxu1LlU?si=MTI_NToQoA5M81fm

The Bose is inferior in all aspects and is larger and heavier at the same time.

The JBL needs some slight EQ adjustment to really sound impressive, default JBL signature rather sucks. I am going to prepare some EQ settings to optimise the sound for different use cases. My current unit is GG and it sounds similar to the very first unit I had. I will also try to find a TL and ND version to compare them all directly as I think they all sound different, and would need different settings.

One negative point is the very rough volume control at low levels, while above 75% there are very little changes in loudness. Also missing are user saveable presets. You just have 1 single user setting and would need to readjust this every time. Allegedly in TWS only JBL Signature is available which would be a bummer but maybe with the recent update this was fixed, can someone with 2 units confirm that user EQ is available in TWS mode now?

Despite the limitations I would still choose the Charge 6 as the best overall portable speaker for summer 2025. It can sound impressive and way larger than the size would suggest outperforming all other speakers this size I have tried. The fact that it’s mono is not such an issue as off axis dispersion remains smooth without any combfiltering.

Well done JBL, I hope the Boombox 4 will be just as nice and will set a new standard in this class.

If money was no object, would a bose soundlink max be better as a portable speaker or is the charge 6 still your choice?

oluvsgadgets

No way, the Max only sounds acceptable if listened exactly on axis, it’s even larger and heavier than the Plus and at normal levels there is no advantage in bass at all for the Bose like I have shown in my last video. The JBL has a more punchy and less boomy sound and remains 100% clean up to maximum volume, I am really impressed what JBL has achieved here. The JBL is so great because it’s still very compact yet manages to sound like a larger speaker.

Is a JBL collaboration on the cards? From what I can see, you could give them some useful advice. 😎 It would be great if the Boombox 4 could be more than just a "boombox" and become a versatile speaker like the Uboom X. 🤔

Yu Ding

So I should get the charge 6 over a soundlink max? :)

oluvsgadgets

I see no reason to get a Soundlink Max, only impressive fact is the stereo enhancing but it only works well if you sit half a meter in front of the speaker.

oluvsgadgets

I don’t know anyone at JBL and with such a huge company it’s impossible to get the right contacts, besides JBL is established enough to not need help from any external amateurs.

I just bought an anker boom 2 for $99, should I return it and get the jbl for $250?

J

Would you take the charge 6 over the uboom L?

oluvsgadgets

The charge 6 is way more powerful and can produce deeper louder bass. For outdoor use it’s definitely a better choice.

J

Ok, for indoors the uboom L will be better then?

Pavel Grishkalis

Hi Oluv. Earfan UBOOM L visually has the same area of passive radiators as charge 5,6.The pair of drivers are also comparable. Was it technically possible to make a similar bass in the style of harman cardon LUNA or jbl charge? Or is this the maximum at the moment from a technical point of view?

oluvsgadgets

There was no way to get more bass out of it. It could have played a bit lower but then it would distort like the Luna. With Vbass maybe it could have been a bit more punchy but there is no way to try it out as Earfun doesn’t give me access to

D.G.O

Hi Oluv! I have a quick question for you. In terms of sound neutrality, which one do you think does a much better job of getting close to a more accurate sound reproduction experience, the Earfun UBOOM L, or the JBL Charge 6?

DominikReviews

I dont remember luna to be distorted

Adam Szymusiak

JBL Charge 6 outpefrom Marshall Middleton II I guess ? I order one and I will compere it to Marshall Stockwell II, your speaker winner in 2020 :)

I'm very happy with my Soundcore Motion+ in the last years. Would you say the Charge 6 outperforms it in a significant way?

Jose Santos

hey oluv i have a question regarding the tuning on the eaarfun free pro 3's. Did something happen to your custom tuning, i listened to em, and felt so different from the usual. Thanks, regards.

oluvsgadgets

Honestly don’t know, haven’t touched them for 2 years. But given the sample variation on the Free Pro 2, I wouldn’t be surprised

Stefan Czaja

I’m really interested in your EQ settings. I bought the Charge 6 yesterday, and so far I’m not very impressed. Yours sounds way better, so I think it might be due to the EQ configuration.

oluvsgadgets

I would say UBoom X with 048 and studio mode if you sit exactly in front. UBoom L has some dynamic bass and treble boost for low levels and is tuned a bit brighter to begin with for better off axis performance. The Charge 6 can be equalised a bit but it will never sound 100% neutral.

oluvsgadgets

On JOY‘s channel there are 2 EQs the 1st worked well with the 1st unit, the 2nd one sounded better with the 2nd unit. The current unit seems to be more similar to the 1st one.

Stefan Czaja

Thank you very much for the advice. It sounds much better now!!!
