In this video we will test the Sony ULT Tower 9 against the JBL Partybox 720 outdoors and will start the power generator later on, to check if they become any louder, or if the distortion issues of the Partybox 720 improve when powered from AC.

Thank you for the comparison! Very entertaining. My theory is there is a very narrow peak in low-frequency area for the JBL causing it to distort easy almost at any level above half really. Similar to the Eon One Mk2. The only solution I found to fixed this is to cut ~60hz and below by maybe -3db or more and compensate around 120hz to restore the fullness at source level. Spotify for iphone has a good EQ engine built-in and quite sounds good when set right on each frequency. Apple music I think don't offer a custom EQ, but it has built-in presets but not sounding good honestly. Then, I would turn on Bassbost 1 to compensate for the attenuation of lowest bass we did from the source. Because I think the Bassbost mode for the JBL is just some kind of effect and rarely adds some distortion. After that I can mess around the EQ in app. But it's a lot of effort to do all that. The Ultimate for sure will sound clean at max volume. Very interesting to see!

hi, which eq for the motion 300 is closest to your uboom indoor +? thanks. do you think you will ever do a review of the soundcore 3i? it would be nice to have something a bit more powerful than the motion 300, but a bit more portable than the charge 6

Disappointment from the Sony. Have you seen the new Audio Pro "W" series speakers? Apparently they now offer parametric eq from Wiim app, could be really interesting to test some of that stuff in the future (also there's Wiims own Sound lite). A28 W for 600€ and A38 for 800€ could be a really interesting option if the response can be improved with 10 PEQ filters

boom 3i is just distorted mess with some weird artefacts in the bass and also has some issues at higher volumss

What eq setting for the motion 300 is closest to indoor+? I have the motion 300

I thought Sony has learned from their past mistakes of muffled speakers but it seems they still love the TOO warm and muffled sound with a bit of improvements. Sony has indeed made improvements with their more portable ULT series. ULT 1 sounds good, ULT 3 becomes a distortion mess at higher volumes, ULT 5 lacks a bit of highs. I remember the XB60 and XB90 from your past videos. ULT 10 has more highs and mids but I am not sure how it will sounds at higher volumes or it might do the same with the ULT 9. I am aiming for the JBL PB 720 even if JBL is "Not afraid to hide it" (distortions).

Many people complained that old partyboxes lacked bass at high volume because the DSP limited the bass too much to avoid distortion. So JBL chose to allow more bass at high volume for 720 but this results in more distortion, because it is physically impossible to get perfect sound with this level of deep bass in a speaker of this size. The new Rockster 2 can barely maintain a similar bass level to the 720 before distorting as well yet it is a much bigger and heavier speaker.

I have the Rockster 2, it sounds ok up to 60% volume with the default settings then beyond that the bass starts to distort, I'm a little disappointed by its performance, I expected better for a speaker weighing more than 40kg and 1200€.
