I was wondering how loud all of you usually listen to music when using headphones? From my experience I usually tend to listen at much higher levels over headphones than what I would over a speaker but I still have the impression as I was rather listening at lower levels than many others.

As we have lots of Earfun Free Pro OE users here we can at least create comparable results (although I think that even 2 Earfun Free Pros can differ slightly in loudness even when set to the same volume level) by listening to the same recording from the same source and with the same earphone.

I am not sure how exact the loudness level can be transformed over to Android but on iOS volume control is synced between the Earfun Free Pro and the iPhone/iPad, thus only 16 distinct volume steps are available.

When I worked on the tuning back then I was listening to lots of tunes as shown in my playlist: https://music.apple.com/at/playlist/earfun-free-pro-oluv-s-audiophile-collection-1/pl.u-11zB9Koc8zoBp5

The volume level for the 1st song was mostly as shown in the screenshot. This would mean it’s the 9th step, sometimes I even prefer the 8th step if I really listen for longer than 1 hour, but I would rarely turn volume higher than step 10 with this particular song.

Now it would be really interesting how loud all of you usually listen as this would also affect the tuning and how you perceive it at higher or lower levels.

If you listen louder than me you will perceive the sound definitely bassy and harsh, while if you rather listen at lower levels than me, you can perceive the sound as too basslight, lacking detail at the same time.

I am curious about this and would welcome all to share their “values” because I need some reference points for future how to deal with this if I happen to tune some other product once again.

Thanks!

PS: thanks for all contributions so far but please keep in mind that most my YouTube recordings should be also played back at step 9-10 with the Earfun Free Pro to get more or less a comparable loudness of what I was hearing in real life. My last video of the Onyx Studio 7 sounds more or less “correct” when I set volume to 9, 10 is already too loud, something in between these 2 should be spot on.

Unfortunately I cannot set the gain for all my videos equally depending on the loudness of the recorded content. Therefore this is just a rough guide. But at volume 9-10 you should get a quite realistic representation of the real sound I heard.

I listen at 3 steps at home, 6 to 7 on the bike, and in really noisy places around 10.

I use AirPods Pro and a Bose QC35 II and I rarely go over the 4 step in my house ( AirPods Pro sounds curiously louder than the Bose)

oluvsgadgets

Currently trying 3, but usually I never listen that soft, but when getting used to that increasing volume past 7 becomes pretty loud all of a sudden

J

I do, as late in the evening i really enjoy this, it might be different on iphone but should be quite comparable i think? I have a OnePlus phone which plays at 6 from 30 steps, so it should be around 3 steps on iphone

oluvsgadgets

Is volume synced between your OnePlus and the Earfuns?

J

Yes it is, all androids from Android 7 at least and above the year 2017 should be in sync btw, i didn't use any eq or direc audiotuner. So pure default tuning from you.

oluvsgadgets

You can try by turning them down completely and then tapping volume up on the right one, if you count 3 until you get the desired volume it should be indeed the 3rd one

J

Yes it's the 3th one, when i control from my phone its the 6th one.

J

But why oh why the airpods pro? Soundwise they are on the level of a jbl t280...?🤔 Which is 30€

Romain Louault

I paid them 116€ renewed by Amazon (they are as new in fact), and for this price, I bet you can’t find as balanced TWS buds as the AirPods Pro. The audio quality is ok+ and fairly EQable wich make them pleasant to my ears. Stereo imaging is really good, amazing for movies (spatial audio reproduced well two speakers and a center for voices and their is a minimal latency on iPhone). Also, the ANC is very VERY impressive (excellent on bass/mids frequency but just ok in highs region). They are super comfortable, lightweight and battery is ok with the case and it’s fast charge ability. Transparency mod is really impressive to, with a good tweaking room : you can choose wether high or low frequencies you want to boost, with a L/R balance. Last but not the least, they are so well integrated to apple ecosystem. I didn’t buy them for their audio quality but I’m enough satisfied with it I use them also at home.

You could ask me why a QC35 ? Same answer : versatility. Excepted that the Bose sounds near to horrible to my ears without any EQ. But with it, I would say it’s an ok option too.

Anker Soundcore Q30 ( oluv’s eq ) sound volume 10 out of 16 ( maximum 12 )

Wow, that's loud. that track is mastered pretty loud, I would listen to it at most at 6 (iphone, spotify with loudness normalization off). though it is late and quiet in here so I will probably listen louder on a more noisy environment. Now it makes more sense to me why on your headphone recordings there is lots of bass and treble peaks - you listen much louder than me.

Otto

I've almost always had my headphones way quieter than most people around me have them. A few years ago I'd be at 3 or 4 in quiet areas, and a bit louder in loud areas, but never over 6. Now with my noise cancelling headphones and a bit of change in habits, I am usually at 3 or 4, occasionally 5 and rarely 6. So not that much changed. I feel like volume levels are something you get used to easily. I personally have trouble listening to music above 7 or 8 because it's just unnecessary to me, but if I do that for a minute and then switch back to my usual levels, they seem quiet for a minute and then it feels normal again. But yea I am a quiet listener. I tend to turn my speakers up relatively a tiny bit more, but still quite low for the average.

Marioragcurtain

I usualy listen at 9-10 with the earfuns on android. With some songs 11 maybe but never higher then that. Im curious how that compares to iphone.

Simon Hibbert

I listen to earfun go on level 7 to 9 dependent on track quality. My Sony 1000x2 is similar though i will pump it up more as i love its sound stage with poweramp. I also have 2 old plug in headphones sennheiser hd 219 with a dac connector where i now reduced to 5 step from a previous 9 and the same results with sony MDRZX310 (bought for 4.50 in sainsburys about month ago)

Michał

I'm listening to the earfuns on 5/15 volume level on Android phone. From my experience the listening volume actually depends on the headphones signature - for something like Bowers and Wilkins P7 I Like to boost the volume a little bit since they are muddy and quite dark sounding headphone, on the other hand when I used to listen to something like grado sr80 - It wouldn't be listenable at higher volumes.

MMMM

I did get to 10, and 11 was becoming harsh on the 1st song. Come to think about it there’s no universal volume setting. Some will listen quiet, some at moderate levels, some may want more power and listen loud. In the future you might want to create a loudness curve, basically a setting for low levels. Then a normal setting. I wish there were earphones with 3 levels to be honest… also for high volume setting. When you explained that you listen on moderate levels (8, 9) your tuning to me made much more sense, and was very good for my ears. Personally listening to something I really like: Daft Punk RAM, I really wish I could listen to it louder, I find 13 to be ok, but I would start putting some of my own EQ to make it softer sounding with a little less bass when going to 14. However now knowing what level you used to tune your earphones has made the experience even better when I would match it. Great job Olaf.

Stephan

I listen also very loud to music. First Song 14/16 via iPhone on my Earfuns OE and also Airpods Max.

KlarkKentThe3rd

Normally rather low, either because my current pair is too sensitive, because my sound card is krap and the higher you go the more compressed, or because my hearing is good. Only go high when the track is a REAL bop.

Andrew C

Around 4-5 on my Sony WH-1000XM3 over Bluetooth from iPad.

Joshua Leblanc

I already suffer from tinnitus so I listen at lower than average levels.

bodi

On Earfun Pro OE with iPhone 12 mini: indoors 4-5, Outdoor 6-7 (sometimes 8)

bodi

Ba the way, for full nice mastering and full stereo experience try the song „King of the lobby“ from The Brecker Brothers, and also great one and excellent production „Tower of inspiration“ from Dave Weckl. You can find both on the album GRP 30.

Ville-Veikko Savolainen

These are my experiences from Oluv Edition. I listen to music but also podcasts. For me the volume has usually been enough, I've been using sound levels close to maximum volume. Bigger problem is that severe channel imbalance has occured lately. Left channel volume is very low.

oluvsgadgets

I will put them into one of my upcoming audiophile playlists

markus intimidantus

On android Op Nord I listen with the earfun OE on 18 or 19...on a scale to 30...

Jannes wel

With the free pro i'm about 2 steps ober the half. But Sometimes with fat Dance music im going at 3/4 loudness with Boosted Bass! ;-)

J

I also have the nord!😎

Sonny Chatwiriyachai

Oluv do you think there is a significant difference between using Apple Music and other music provider such as Spotify or Tidal? Should we invest more with Tidal for more sound quality or should not bother?

oluvsgadgets

I highly doubt that there are differences noticeable in compression etc but I am rather impressed by the mastered for iTunes versions which sound much better than regular versions, not always though.

Konrad P

Mainly I listened 8max and below but your earfuns sound best at 8-9 to me so I changed my habits and turn up to 14 when after Party

LoToG

On Xaomi Redmi Note 9S I listen on 6-7 (EDM, Pop, Rock, Metal) and rarely on 8 (classical), which depends on the actual volume level of the music. I usually do my measurement on 85dB. When I switch back to listening I usually have to tune it down, so I probably listen at around 80dB +-2dB (again depending on the music).

Gábor Antal

I use my Earfun Free Pro OE on the 7-9 volume step on android and on iOS too (depending on my mood).

Nael

Hi oluv ! On my earfun free pro OE, i usuelly prefer the 7th (iPhone) The 8 is pratically as good too, those two are the best in term of details and bass restitution, it seems to be the best frequency response i can get ! The 9 starts to get a little too loud (and harsh). The lowers one are good but are not as full as the 7th and 8th stepsDidnt pay attention to that while outside Those earpods are really the best i tried, the tuning is perfect for my tastes thank you ! (Had no doubt about that when i bought haha)

Benedikt Geißler

With iPhone and Earfun Free Pro I hear on around level 3 (outside rather 4 or 5, depends on the noise around me). With the Soundcore Life Q30 I hear on level 7 to 8.
