We hate bullshit which is why we welcome your reviews! Keep up the good work!

bodi

Calzone

Thanks. Can you please put the model names in the description of the final video. In the middle of the video I forgot the model names and it would be useful to be able to see the full model name for reference when you mention them after the sound test.

MMMM

Very well said, it’s business, not audio that matters…

Stanislav Baranec

Cool video. May I know why you didn’t put the 3 Beyerdynamic’s into the sound comparison? Are you planning to deal with those in the future?

oluvsgadgets

yes, I am planning to do a separate Beyerdynamic video covering all models at once, but the only usable one is the DT770/80 for me with some slight modification it sounds very decent. The others would need serious EQ. One issue I currently have is that live I cannot quite demonstrate the change of sound with different positioning as my recorder will rather clip due to capturing subsonic content when moving a headphone around. I wanted to wait to get my custom built low-cut filter, but it seems as if this "project" was delayed again and again.

Daniel

Great video. Since you always say that the shape of the ear canal is what matters the most I'm wondering if this counts the same way for open back headphones as it does for inears because with an open back design you don't get the closed tube you get with in ears

oluvsgadgets

It was full of midroll ads which I wanted to remove first

oluvsgadgets

No, at least not to such a degree like with inears. With inears you create a closed pipe from both ends with own resonances and these can vary in frequency depending on the length of this pipe, that’s why etymotic was so clever with their deep insertion method as you squeeze this volume and shift those peaks to much higher frequencies. Of course I cannot quite “investigate” how much influence the ear canal alone has on over ear headphones; there is definitely some influence too but not to such a degree. I am not a scientist and my knowledge about all these facts is not that profound.

PiotrSki

Hello Oluv, if part of the urban legends is true, some of headphones are more demanding on the source / play crappy by design when plugged in directly to a notebook analog output. Did you use a DAC or in your feeling it would not bring any value. (somehow I have missed that part). Thx for a great work!

Daniel

Okay that would mean that people should rather get a more similar perception of the sound from open headphones than from inears.. I totally agree with you that frequency response is the most important thing, but I'm doubtful that you can recreate the character of an open back design just by adjusting the frequency response of an inear

oluvsgadgets

To me the difference if any was so insignificant that I didn’t bother more with that. I am not sure what aspects others are hearing or think to hear but I didn’t want to waste my time with that. I could try once to compare a crazy expensive DAC/amp combo against a simple iPhone output, I already did such tests and a small percentage could distinguish some differences between all sources, but the major part heard all more or less equal.

oluvsgadgets

Of course I cannot say for sure about all these aspects but in reality what really counts is the final wave that hits your eardrum. If that final wave can be made be the same for 2 different headphones regardless if open or closed it will sound the same. Sound stage etc is probably also a factor of a particular response. I want to do some further experiments regarding this topic to prove my theory

Brett Rawlings

Thanks was able to view. I agree completely. Your honesty and hard work is appreciated.

PiotrSki

That could be actually an interesting experiment - blind test of few headphones while plugged to an expensive DAC vs iPhone. Maybe the next holly grail would collapse - or at least it could show that an average guy does not really hear the subtle differences and could protect himself against professional audio marketing bullsht. :)

oluvsgadgets

Not sure if you have seen this video already? But it was also a blind test so you can try for yourself if you can hear some differences, the uncompressed files are still available for download: https://youtu.be/1ZNLEVnb9Dc There was a follow up video revealing all sources titled “which amp sounds best”

oluvsgadgets

It’s the same for me except that I stopped using Etymotics due to the issues with deep insertion. The other ones used are the Q30 and Elex, I rarely use something else

oluvsgadgets

Ok, cool, looking forward to it. As I’m owning.the DT770 PRO’s (32 Ohm) myself, I’m wondering how they will sound through your recording compared 🙂 Btw, I remember you were having B&O H4’s (1st Gen), which you already featured in one of your older videos of overear headphones. I was just wondering if you still have them and how do they sonically stack up (with your custom sound adaptation in B&O app) to the Soundcore Q30’s. I’m currently owning 2nd Gen of H4’s, and quite honestly, I’m pretty satisfied with the sound. I also bought the Q30’s, which are not really up to my expectations. They’re quite decent, once equalized, but I couldn’t get the sound signature as heard from your videos out of them (perhaps because I’m not using ANC as you do), so I gave them to my daughter 🙈

Pavel Grishkalis

Oluv, try JBL TUNE 500BT, in my opinion they are very good for the money

Dovydas

Hello, the new Q30 eq is tuned to the latest firmware (if anything changed) or not? Thank you.

oluvsgadgets

I haven’t measured any change in sound with any update since the very beginning with the Q30

yossibm

What about Drop Panda? you said that you can tune them to sound good. "Headphone show" people (resolve, crinacle, etc) said that they are the worst detailed headphones and cannot be fixed with EQ. it could be interesting to prove them wrong.

yossibm

JBL tws have parametric EQ, don't they? couldn't they be tuned to sound good?

MAK1975

Oluv, thanks for the new EQ for the Q30. Are these the new values for the bands? 100 (-6) 200 (+6) 400 (+3) 800 (+3) 1.6k (+1) 3.2k (+6) 6.4k (0) 12.8k (-1) Just wanted to make sure I set it up correctly. Great video and shows how close the Q30 sounds to the original recording of "Analog."

D. Oeltermann

The 500BT with some EQ adjustments is really not that bad. Yes, parametric EQ via app. Built quality of housing is not the best though. EDIT: I meant the Live500BT

oluvsgadgets

Yes these values should be correct more or less but keep in mind that the app seems to save finer values in between. I tried it with pink noise to really hear the changes and I could hear the sound change by just moving the slider a bit without changing the displayed value

markus intimidantus

Yes. You are so right... I bought a lot of headphones on recommendations on youtube...I wil not name/shame those channels though but they aren't trustfull.

Brian

Is your preference for the q30 transport or indoor? I hear a distinct difference between the two settings with your eq.

Jorge Diez

I'd like to know this also, whats the prefered setting for noise cancelling? Should the EQ preset need to be changed too much in order to use it with the normal mode selected?

oluvsgadgets

The EQ was set for traffic or indoor, but I liked it most with indoor, traffic was nearly the same, outdoor changes the sound too much

Nicolas Serrano

Simon Hibbert

I just named this eq oluv edition 😆 listening to Frank Sinatra and its sounds so smooth

Anomalyn

How can i get the Elex in Europe?

oluvsgadgets

Either self import from some forwarder or get a used one from eBay

OP1M.DR3M

Would you say the Q30 are your favorite closed back? How do they compare to AKG K361?

oluvsgadgets

They sound more true and open than the K361. But build quality is bad and the hinges start crackling after some time. For the asked money there is still no better one I would have heard.
