Thanks a lot to all who participated and big respect to those who had both tests solved correctly.

Test 1: A - Elex, B - Utopia

Test 2: A2 - original recording, B2 - Elex

I am planning to prepare a bigger more controlled test like this with various types of headphones. I wanted to include the following ones: HD800S, DT770, Verum-1, AKG N700NC M2 and Koss ESP/95X to get most possible variants including planar magnetic, open/closed, electrostatic and also wireless…

The idea is to record some songs through all these headphones, equalize all recordings to a flat response and compare if other particular aspects of the given headphones will be still noticeable like sound stage, detail retrieval, speed, dynamics or whatever. I wonder how different the rather congested AKG N700 will sound compared to the huge sounding HD800S if both are equalized to the same response. I am not sure such a test has ever been done before.

I would just need your help for the song selection as I want songs that can be revealing to some degree with top notch recording quality. Because of this I prepared a playlist with some songs from which I would like to select 4-5. Please let me know which songs you would prefer and would find best for such a task or if you have other suggestions. I also included the Portia Monique track as I wanted something with a nice punchy bass as well.

MMMM

Wohoo! At least I got the first test right! Seems like the Elex makes the songs more dynamic probably because of a different frequency response than a perfectly flat response. Interesting. Thanks Olaf for your hard work!

Where can you purchase the ELEX? Thanks in advance!

Dandrey

Yes , i totally support that idea of future tests and thank you in advance .

Haha! It's nice to hear I guessed right both times 😊 Oluv, are Elex or any other headphones you know worth upgrading from my beloved HD650? Because I can hear that Elex are very good in terms of frequencies but are they worth 700 USD and dealing with shipping to Europe as well as their bad quality control? Please share your thoughts of what could be the end game headphones. I appreciate the work that you're doing. Thank you for being a voice of sanity in this ocean of marketing bullshit.

Carol Duboc-Elephant, Roots, cloud ix, one day you'll know, I'm gonna love you just a little more baby & Apocalyptic

Yep. This kind of test has never been done before, and will never be, as long as they want to market headphones with exotic materials, such as beryllium, planar and electrostatic. Looking forward to your test results.

lol, in first test I preferred A = Elex in the second Test I preferred A2 = original 🙈

I would be happy if you did more of those community based blind tests of all kind oluv 👍

I'd say they are worth it, but the build quality is too big of a risk for me at least. If you really like your HD650 then you're in trouble. Almost nothing is better in every way. Especially if you EQ them (Oratory1990's Harman target). Ananda is something worth testing. I've skipped those since they fit so poorly on my head. HD800s I don't prefer over an EQ'd HD650. LCD-2 Closed is a nice planar, but more different than better.

Hartyewh

Planar is not exotic. It's a very simple mechanical difference with some benefits and some weaknesses. Testing an LCD-4 for example will make it very obvious that the detail in the low end is almost unnatural. At least more then many studio people meant to be heard in their work. In the end I prefer a K371 for music listening, but it's undeniable that the LCD-4 are on a different level in some narrow ways.

Alexander

Thank you, Marek. If I have a chance to check our the headphones you mentioned I will surely do it. I don't eq my HD650 but now I think I will try it out just to see the difference.
