Due to the announcement of the new Free Pro 2 there is lots of buzz going on right now in the comment section and in my messages. Therefore I wanted to give you my first thoughts on this model because I had the chance to play with it for some time now.

The new model has better build quality, the body is smaller with the outer part being out of aluminium, it feels definitely more premium now. Also the nozzle cover is a metal mesh now and not a sticker that can peel off after some time.

The battery box is still plastic but it’s even smaller and more rounded than the old one thus even better to be taken with you every time you leave the house. The battery box is still completely out of plastic though, it’s not bad but does not give such a premium feeling as the inears themselves.

ANC an transparency modes are both better than on the old model. Transparency mode is louder than before and ANC seems to be at a similar level as the Air Pro 2. Controls are still the same, just that instead of triple tapping on the left one you need to tap and keep press for longer to switch between normal, ANC and transparency mode.

There are good news and bad news. First the food news: it behaves exactly the same as the Free Pro, which means you can access the internal EQ with the app and the user setting remains saved and active after power down inline with the Air Pro 2 which saves the setting permanently but always switches back to the default EQ after power down. The bad news: the raw sound is really bad, the balance is completely off, unlike with the old Free Pro, where the overall sound followed a natural curve and just needed a bit of work to correct the balance by reducing the main 2 peaks at 3khz and 6khz and toning bass down to a normal level which left enough filters for all the small details etc which required the most work. With the Free Pro 2 it will take at least several filters to get the response curve to something usable. I am not sure I can manage something outstanding, I already gave it a first quick try and managed to make it sound at least usable, but it’s not a sound I would be proud of. The default tuning is OK-ish I would say, even better than the default tuning of the old model, but it’s still bassheavy and resonant in the upper mids, definitely not something I would like to listen to music.

Some quick measurements: my rough own target in grey (derived from my upcoming Free Pro 2 tuning), in green the raw tuning and in blue what I have achieved so far. Unfortunately I seem to have forgotten to measure the default tuning from Earfun and as soon as a user EQ is set, you won’t be able to access the original tuning anymore. My first result would appear quite nice already now at least from the graph, but it’s all in the small details that needs more attention and work:

As long as I am still fighting with the Free Pro right now I will pass on the Free Pro 2 and not recommend getting it for sound quality at this moment. I cannot promise it will ever sound as decent as I managed with the Free Pro, but I will try my best as soon as I finished optimising the sound for the Free Pro and getting closer and closer to the “natral target” that I will use as base for all my future IEM tuning. I sat until 4 o’clock in the morning yesterday to finalise the 6K tuning and I am convinced the overall balance of the Free Pro is much more natural than it ever was and hope I can apply my recent findings onto all other tunings.

Hi. Have Earfun not contacted you before they release anything to the market? Are they so sure to have a good sound without help? I mean they 100% realised that the OE Version of the Pro was a lot better than their standard product. But now they keep going on the "old way"?

oluvsgadgets

No they didn’t realise it. For them the sound does not matter as people do not care anyhow and buy any crap which is promoted by reviewers who get paid to promote it. The human ear will adopt to any given sound anyhow after some minutes (some need some days for this or even weeks and call this “break-in”) and if everyone tells you how great this product is you will also believe it. I tried my best to talk to them for some collaboration but they were not interested.

I hope you will one day find an audio company that will value your insights and expertise.

Wayne Lee

Would you also consider Anker's new Liberty pro 3 as a potentially EQ-able earbud?

oluvsgadgets

If it doesn’t offer fully parametric EQ then I highly doubt it can be made to sound decent. The WF1000XM4 was the only want which had the basic tuning already quite smooth and usable and just needed some slight tweaks to adjust it to your ear

Wayne Lee

Would you see the WF1000XM4 to be worthy of a tuning similar to your earfun free pro guide?

oluvsgadgets

No, it’s way more expensive and it only had a 4-band EQ. It still sounded quite decent but I didn’t like the comfort and those foamie tips

Wayne Lee

That's unfortunate but I understand your position on this. Thank you for the time invested into affordable audiophile earbuds. Looking forward to the next earbuds tuned by you.

Many thanks for your "first thoughts". As always we could learn again in 5 minutes more usable information about a product, as from all other marketing blah blah or from the so called reviewers.

Dovydas

Thanks, Oluv. They look more premium, but sound is more important. Seems like Air Pro 2's would be a better choice, but they don't save the settings which is unfortunate.

Ist die SBC übertragung bei bluetooth 5.0, 5.1 und 5.2 gleich gut?

oluvsgadgets

Hingt sehr vom Zuspieler ab. Bei Apple klingen die wirklich top über SBC, besser als über AAC von android

Speaking of Earfun Pro. My left earphone started acting up because earwax managed to clog it. I tried cleaning it with rubbing alcohol without any significant results. So I decided to tear off the "protective sticker" exposing metallic grill underneath. Sound changed drastically - Mids recessed and sibilance was introduced. It all became somewhat unpleasant to listen to. I realized that there was no way back so i did the same thing to right one. There i was thinking I damaged the product irreversibily. Then I remembered Oluv's video about some Bluetooth speaker that he were modifying by adding fabric to dampen it. So. I took out the protective metallic grill out too. took cotton , rolled it into 2 small loose balls (of the size of opening ) and with tweezers carefully jammes them halfway through opening. To my surprise that fixed the sound which led me to further experiments with various amounts of cotton. Couple days later I found the sweetspot. NowI'm in the place where improving it any further is getting difficult. Maybe I'm not getting 100% oluv's EQ experience. but now i don't need to worry about them clogging again. Worse case scenario I'll just replace the cotton. Will order a new set of Earfuns to see the difference I've made , but i believe my custom mod is here to stay.

Weird, my pair of Ear Fun Pro OE don't have any metallic grill underneath the "sticker"...

@Tamás Major: On the new model there is a metal grill instead of the sticker, which is installed on the previous model. @Aivis Zolmanis: There is no structural difference between Free Pro and Free Pro OE, only the sound tuning is different.

Aivis Zolmanis

@Amiga Not instead..I had grill + sticker.

oluvsgadgets

It's a fact that ANC is better , but in tests phone call quality is worse than Free Pro (and since it's the same Aihora chip) it leads me to think that firmware is mainly responsible for this... I wonder if they put better microphones on a new model or not.
