Are there still differences noticeable regarding sound stage, imaging, detail, resolution with 5 different headphones equalized to the same frequency response?

Find out and tell me which one sounds best, worst, most different...?

Is it 5xx or 4xx ? oh the text in the video is wrong

I used to use (haha) AKG k240s, and while their sound was GOOD, the headstrap was awful. My thin low quality hair would be flattened very soon after putting the AKG on, and since the strap is just plastic, my skull could not breathe, resulting in much sweat. So, my head after 2 hours of using the (o_o)phone would resemble a sweaty egg with hairs drawn on it with a sharpie. Terrible, TERRIBLE headstrap. Will never use such a design again in my life. Still good sound.

Equalized, D had the best (or the most boosted) deep bass, so the bass drum was really felt. B just sounds too closed, whatever soundstage I might have felt by listening to just the OG file, is gone. E sounds PERHAPS (without hearing the original files) the most balanced. Also one of the most detailed samples, definitely. Keep in mind I am listening through KPH30i, which are only mildly improved Portapros. C is slightly inferior to E, which, again, sounds best. P.S. You do not need 96,000hz for the music, ever. Trust me on this. 48,000 is enough already. And if all you need to test is frequency response and RELATIVE detail retrieval, 16bit 44,100hz is definitely enough.

My preference (starting with the best sounding in my ears): - E - C - A - B - D (sounds compressed/flatter/less detailed) Listening on Jabra Evolve 75

Nemanja

This is my overall score: 1. B 2. C 3. A 4. E 5. D I kept switching C and B for first place from song to song, but they might as well share the first place. On the metal song they all sounded pretty much the same to me, and in general they really sound very similar. To me A has maybe bit more bass and treble, and D an maybe E lack some mids. It is difficult to me to put in words what is happening tone-wise, but I'd say that there is little difference between C and B, as well as between E and D, and A sitting closer to C and B

Nemanja

P.S. I first wrote my impressions, before reading other comments. After reading them, I wanted to hear E again since initially for me it was near the bottom of the list, and for some other users in the top. After being "influenced" by the comments, I compared C (my second best choice) and E (my second worst choice) and honestly sounded the same... Can't wait for the results and the next part of this video!

Dont think they have exactly the same FR. Because D and E has noticeably more treble than the other 3. I noticed that A has punchier/dryer base response especially the very first heavy drum beat in between 1 and 2 second - not sure it is explainable by FR. Overall I like the sound of C, followed by B. For me D and E are just a bit too harsh while A a bit too dry/dull. I'm using earfun free pro 2 smooth tuning.

Ryan Feeley

Dumb question, but I wasn't clear if you adjusted the EQ of the songs before playback or adjusted the recording of the songs after playback. Either way, the similarity is shocking. Most people would not be able to tell the difference.

Michał

D --> sounds definitely the worst --> something wrong happened there in the treble region ( I suspect this might be the koss one, definitely has narrow soundstage ) A,B.C --> I think diferrences between those 3 are really small and each headphone sounded pleasant to listen to E --> It's somewhere in between to me, definitely has recessed treble compared to the others, still It was pleasant, bass was too much for me ( noticed that each sounded a little bit too bass heavy - I assume It's fault of my own equipment, which is tuned to match the harman curve )

oluvsgadgets

Pink noise recorded for all was matched to real pink noise.

Michał

I'm sure he knows that, It's just some people might demand highest quality possible even though It doesn't matter

N700 800S HE5/4XX 240 Koss or maybe 240 the worst ..

Marcel Ma

With some difficulties at the beginning and after switch to the foobar2000 ABX Tool, I can hear some differences with my slightly tuned HD600. My guess: A - AKG N700 B - Hifiman 5XX C - HD800 D - AKG K240 or Hifiman 5XX (because it has some peaks in the very high frequencies and I know that from my Hifiman Deva which is nearly the same headphone) E - Koss Porta Pro Can’t say which is my favourite.

David Ellestad

For me the tie is between C and E with E having a slight edge. There's something a little bit more soft, even, and detailed about E that C doesn't have. A and B had something with them that didn't quite make me comfortable while listening to them and D was just too much bass. Played through MusicBee with output to a Schiit Modius and Schiit Jotunheim to a pair of Focal Elears.

Annu Ab Del Sol

Why is at c left and right channel switched? Hearable at 6:50. For the last song and the part at 6:50 b is my favorite, but I don't test c cause of changed channels

oluvsgadgets

Only 6:50 is changed? Check the other songs. Everything is correct

Annu Ab Del Sol

Ying Mak

My ranking is the same as Nemanja's: 1. B 2. C 3. A 4. E 5. D I swear I'm not Nemanja's twin! For me, B was the clearest and most detailed in every track, though especially in the 2nd and last (metal) track. C wasn't quite as detailed, but had the punchiest bass and was enjoyable. A and E were okay, they just didn't stand out like B and C. But D was the worst in that it did not have detail like the others, and the treble sounded slightly shrill.

Annu Ab Del Sol

Does nobody else hear the lead guitar from right at c and on all other headphones from left?

yossibm

well I guess you proved that detail, speed, etc is bullshit. from difference in soundstage and the remaining FR I can guess that: A - koss porta pro (lack of subbass and small sounding) B - HD800S (largest soundstage with somewhat fake widening) C - hifiman (compare to E has more subbass, and "larger" sound, which are planar characteristics) D - akg n700 (close sounding, and boomy) E - akg k240 (by elimination) regarding preference: i would say c,b,e,a,d. it will be funny to find out that i am completely wrong. although I wouldn't trust that method for really evaluating something like sound stage because when i am playing it back on lesser headphones i will lose the original capabilities.

yossibm

I hear it too

Eliot Jacobsen

They sound extremely similar to me. Frequency response is the great equalizer (hehe). Der Kaiser hat keine Kleider!
