I need to ask this as I want some feedback to get an idea about how the different tunings I created over time are perceived by others. Lately I sent a unit to Andrew from Resolve reviews created an exact tuning for his particular resonance frequency and his feedback was quite reserved, although I know others who perceive the sound in a similar way like me. Therefore I am wondering how many actually like the results and how many think it's crap.

Right now I solely listen with the Earfun Free Pro 2 and the neutral tuning, as it sounds most true to me with a very similar timbre to the HD600. I also listened to my previous "flat" tuning for the Free Pro and although both sound similar, I definitely prefer the Free Pro 2. The OE tuning and the later improvements were rather based on an Etymotic target and sound completely different. but some may even prefer my original OE tuning or the versions that I tweaked afterwards. Please let me know what's your favourite. I am planning to create other tunings for the Free Pro 2 based strictly on an Etymotic target, therefore there will be way more diferent flavours available in future and you can pick the one you like most and which suits your hearing best. Although I am sure I won't be able to satisfy everyone.

Feel free to comment what you like, what you don't like and what kind of changes or improvements you would expect for future.

it's the same as neutral, just with a tad more bass

oluvsgadgets

have you ever tried listening to a song over speakers and then try the OE tuning? This was the reason why I tried to improve it afterwards

Vik Bhardwaj

5100 neutral for free pro 2 sounds the best to me. However, I wonder how different the 6xx with oratory’s optimum hifi eq preset would be compared to the 600 with the same eq.

oluvsgadgets

They sound nearly the same, very little difference.

Christoph Jahn

My hifi system is running with two Dali Zensor 3. They sound pretty good for a payable price. so that's my caparison tool. Otherwise i tried to compare with the apple wired iPods (th old ones), the urbanista Stockholm (they are absolute rubbish). For my hifi i have some old Quart Headphones – they still sound good. I have an iPhone so i can't try the updated ones but for me the OE Edition sound very natural and clear. The first day i must brought to my mind that im hearing with headphones – they sounded so natural with a podcast… Also in some cases i wish a little more boom (like with chemical brothers and that kind of stuff) – but for that i turn on the equalizer in Spotify (normally turned off). So: great work!

Same here, smooth (neutral) was the best and harman works better as a mainstream tuning for some reason. The mainstream one sounds a little muffled compared.

Martin Hädecke

For guitar-dominated music, like modern Metal, your Harman-tuning (7000) sounds best for me. On your neutral or mainstream-tuning the guitars sounding suppressed/thinned out and the vocals seems too present/isolated in the front. For classic, jazz, blues etc. I like your neutral-tuning (7000) the most. Before you delivered your Harman-tuning I used the mainstream-tuning as a compromise for both worlds. Now I switch between Harman and neutral, depending on the music and I am very happy with both of them. The EarFun Free Pro updated neutral-tuning sounds also great, but I use the EarFun Free Pro 2 way more, because of good ANC/Transparency modes.

I'm having a hard time isolating my personal ear canal resonance. May I request this as a topic for a YouTube video? I bet it would draw a lot of attention because it points to a problem most people don't know they have (and your targetted EQ is the solution).

Peter L

I did not try the Harman yet, but even with the timing that I have ended up with, i fixed it slightly to my taste.

aure

+1 Ryan Feeley I'm not sure I've identified my ear canal resonance correctly. But I hear difference between 6000, 6250 and 7000.

Peter L

Thanks, I'll better try Harman asap.

Peter L

Same here. I'd support Ryan on this.

My resonance is around 5400Hz so only the Free Pro 2 neutral and Free Pro tunings have my values. I found the Free Pro 2 neutral tuning to be a bit lean so I adjusted 65Hz from -14.5 to -12 and now it sounds more balanced to me. The Free Pro tuning sounds a bit more muddy by comparison. Also, in general, I found both tunings to be slightly harsh, but I am younger so I might be more sensitive to higher tones. All in all, both tunings vastly improve upon the stock tuning and I am really happy with the results. I am interested in hearing what other people think about the tuning profiles, and if other people agree/disagree with my findings.

Manuel Herrera

Honestly, I think all 3 of the free pro 2's sound great. But I was surprised how much I liked the "harman" one. I thought I was going to lose some "positional" queues, but they're still there.

Simon Langford

I have to very different resonance frequencies… L 7200-7250Hz and R 6150-6200Hz. Yes it’s not a typo, a full kHz between left and right. I tried your neutral 7300Hz tuning and 6250Hz tuning on the respective side and they sounded very different! The right one with your 6250Hz tuning sounds really good, smooth, balanced, etc. The left one with 7300 was sharp (as in the opposite of smooth) and overly bright in comparison. Before I go any further, they should sound the same, assuming I identified my resonance frequencies correctly, right?

oluvsgadgets

In theory they should sound the same at least based on the measurements. But there may be other factors involved that nobody is even aware of. Audio perception is a very complex topic with still lots of unknowns. But a full kHz difference between left and right seems very odd. Have you ever been at an Otologist so that he could confirm your asymmetrical ear canals? I only know from mine that they are rather narrow compared to an average.

Simon Langford

I couldn’t believe the big difference either but I tried and tried different things, such as other tips, different positioning and insertion depth of the earbuds etc. I always came to the same result +- 100Hz here and there. So I’m pretty sure it’s true. I haven’t been to the otologist in a long time, but I might consider… Anyways, I’ve spent a loooot of time tuning the left one to match the right one based on listening to single frequencies throughout the whole range. I’m almost finished and will send you my tuning. Maybe others with a resonance frequency of 7kHz or more can try it out? That’s why I also asked in another post what Andrew‘s resonance frequency is. Again, I didn’t tune it to my personal taste as I trust you much more in that regard. But I saw the 6250Hz as the „true“ response since you validated it yourself. My approach was to match that response as closely as possible.

oluvsgadgets

Andrew told me 6100 as his own frequency, he preferred 6250 over 6000, but 6100 didn’t improve much over the others. He didn’t perceive the treble correctly but he prefers much less ear gain overall.

Simon Langford

Alright, so then I can’t help him 😜

Simon Langford

I do remember that Mario‘s tuning (7100Hz) which was published here some time ago went into the same direction as my tuning for 7250Hz. So I think I’m not alone… I can post my tuning here later

oluvsgadgets

Sure, I have some other user settings to post as well. I hope those can be helpful for those who can really perceive that resonance. I could also measure them for comparison.

yossibm

I wouldn't get excited over Andrew, I don't think that he knows what he is talking about. he is just liking everything sean olive says is conforming to the harman target. regardless any treble abnormalities. he goes on and on on how much the k371 is great - which is bullshit - way too much bass. just give him a bass boosted version and says that it costs 5000$ and then he will praise it for it's "trailing end of tones" details.

chris

Me too, I can't find mine either. I've sort of given up on it and just tried different settings

François

Sadly, I finally prefer the harman curve : the extra bass add life to drum's kick or bass guitar. The headphones Who follow the harman generally sound crap on vocals but your tunning doesn't. Neutral tunning is very good too.

Simon Langford

I will also make another comment such that people can see it better, together with my process to get to these results. Not in a 7th comment hidden under another comment ;)

Simon Langford

As promised, here's my tuning for 7250Hz: 65 Hz Gain -14 dB Q 0.2 365 Hz Gain -4.5 dB Q 0.5 1100 Hz Gain -5 dB Q 0.6 4200 Hz Gain 5.5 dB Q 1.5 7250 Hz Gain -22.0 dB Q 3.25 9400 Hz Gain -20.0 dB Q 2.6 13650 Hz Gain -14.0 dB Q 1.8 14500 Hz Gain -7.5 dB Q 2.2 16000 Hz Gain 2.0 dB Q 0.7 11350 Hz Gain 12.5 dB Q 0.75

Vik Bhardwaj

K371s sound absolutely amazing. With oratorys optimum Hifi eq they become very very close to the target.

Michael Kerr

I thought the Earfun Free Pro with the Olav EQ settings was awesome. The Earfun Free Pro 2 with neutral EQ at 6250Hz just takes it up another level. I'm sitting here listening to Natalie Merchants Ophelia's bouncing between the two and cannot believe how good the Pro 2's are with the neutral EQ. I thought the Earfun Free Pro's were the bee's knees, but your tuning of the Pro 2's is very good.

Kevin B.

I also had this problem, until I was sweeping faster trough the frequencies. The whistling sound became clear for me around 7000.

Richard

if you are more sensible, you need to eq more :) it should sound like real life in the end

Vik Bhardwaj

With oratory1990's hifi eq preset they sound bad?? I mean the graphs show that it's extremely close to the eq target.

oluvsgadgets

With EQ you can make any headphone sound decent, that’s not the point. Even a cheap 30€ Superlux can sound like a HD600 after equalizing

Thijs Kempke

I’m currently using neutral at 7650 with the addition of little bass. I like the separation of instruments, but I have to get used to the harsher higher tones. It sounds a lot more like my bose qc35’s which I love, than my sony xm3’s which I think are muddy and lacking presence. One weird thing with the EF free pro 2’s is that I’m experiencing the music slightly in front of me. I’m wondering how that’s possible..

Aeglon

mainstream. i tried neutral and it sounded like everything was underwater aside from vocals. I'm not sure if thats because I haven't correctly identified my ear canal resonant frequency. I am missing the bass rumble from the stock tuning and wish I spent more than an hour listening to them stock before going past the point of no return.
