I made this video to stop the confusion about the firmware update but Earfun asked me not to publish it. They are afraid even more people would return their speakers as return rate is already high according to them.

I am sorry for all this, I just wanted to offer the best possible but with all the problems now I should have better abandoned this project before.

How do I know what firmware is on my UBOOM L? I received mine last week.

Kreso

When speaker is ON, press "power" and "bluetooth" button at the same time, women voice will read firmware version

ᗩᗰIGᗩ 500

when device is ON just push Power ON/OFF and Bluetooth button at the same time. A lady will tell you quite loud the numbers: zero three six 👻 (maybe you already have "040" but I don't think so...)

Douwe de Vries

I am sorry to read this and that the speaker isn't delivered with the right firmware. You would think that should be doable by EarFun. With the old firmware mine still sounded good, but better in the low-end and treble smoothness with my unit. I am very happy with it on the new firmware. The frequency response sounds great to me and I'm grateful you did this project so I have this high quality little speaker. I have found other YouTubers who also love the balanced sound of the EarFun. People looking for a consumer sound (often more boomy and sharp treble and recessed mids) and aren't audiophiles, may have another opinion. I think you shouldn't be too hard on yourself. I appreciate the hard work.

Kreso

Speaker is great and i dont understand people what bothers them. Its better than Stockwell II, MBoom+ and probably all others

Kairo

It’s a pity that the unit variation is that large. Otherwise if someone found one fitting your eq - really great speaker.

Miki

It's a great speaker, but haters gonna hate. If someone complains about lack of bass, they either had a faulty unit, or they don't understand physics :D I think the high return rates can be simply because ppl are trying it out, even if they don't need a BT speaker at all. The hype was big, probably many people want to hear how it sounds, and Amazon makes returns super easy.

Hartyewh

We have four in our friend group from the preorders and all sound the same and great. EarFun seems like a difficult company to work with. I wonder if some other one would be less so.

Dominik S

I wish you made a frequency response graph before and after the update.

Douwe de Vries

That is strange mine says 0.4.1 when I push the power button and bluetooth button at the same time. I wasn't sure the firmware was updated before - so I did it two times. The last time using the firmware on the EarFun site under the download section. So I'm not sure if there is a bug in that last number and the way it's given back. I have downloaded the firmware file by going here: https://www.myearfun.com/product-guide -> then hovering over the UBOOM L and clicking the firmware link. You are then directed to this link where I updated my firmware from the second time I flashed: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1MI5XiLReotmvD9N0kJKL_q--yb3REeFH The firmware name is also 0.4.0 perhaps it's a little bug the speaker is reading the version incorrectly.

Kreso

Mine also after update 041 and it sounds great

Paul emery

Mine sounds terrible out of the box. A single frequency hiss/sibilance across all songs. Got in touch with them and they said speaker is fine, but clearly defective. Is this anyone else’s experience?

yossibm

mine is also 0.4.1 after the update, and have some upper treble peak (around 13K)

Eljo Anthony N J

Mine also reads 0.4.1 and there is still a lot of sibilance in the treble. Not a great update for me. Need to dial down the upper treble more.

Eljo Anthony N J

In the track "Throne" by Bring Me the Horizon for example there is a lot of sibilances which detracts from the listening experience.

oluvsgadgets

Did you try another unit? As mentioned in the video, I got 1 unit which sounded definitely worse after the update, but still worse with the original firmware than my other units updated. This track sounds very grainy to begin with. It’s not a clean recording

Eljo Anthony N J

No, I haven't tried coz I don't have a spare one. I need to buy a new one which I'm not that excited about. I'll try running it with 3.5mm input (I have a good audio DAC) and see how it turns out for now. Regarding that specific track, yes, it's not that great. Way too grainy. But when I compare Uboom L vs my Samsung Buds Pro, the Samsung is noticeably better when it comes to the treble. Bass is very good with Uboom L with new firmware. EDIT: Thanks for the reply Oluv :thumbs-up:

Eljo Anthony N J

With the new firmware, my Uboom L sounds like my DIY Tabaq transmission-line (full range) speakers. Fantastic bass but on grainy and very busy tracks, there are a lot of sibilances. Mids are heavenly on the Tabaq but the Uboom is not that bad at all.

Eljo Anthony N J

Just tried with 3.5mm input. There is no sibilance but the amount of treble is still there which is a bit high. Sounds decent, to be honest. I'm liking this speaker more than the Amazon Echo Studio I had before!

Douwe de Vries

Last week I just bought a new unit (UBOOM L) and with mine I have a really smooth treble on this one - a smoother treble then the Galaxy Buds Pro (try playing pink noise on both). I also have these - I have too many earbuds which I didn't need in hindsight - I love my EarFun Free Pro 2 with the reference tuning. I just listened to that track on my unit and it doesn't sound sibilant on mine. You may have a odd sounding unit like in a minority of cases you can get. You may just be really happy with a new unit. How is the treble with different music? Just reading it is better sounding with the cable for you. I know we have different ears and sometimes different preferences to sound.

Eljo Anthony N J

Interesting! I bought it from Amazon UK just after the Prime day sale. So, I was thinking I got a newer unit. Do you think I got an older one? Thanks for the reply by the way!

Michał

Unfortunately the system won't detect my speaker, the " download " button flashes but only for a second and then it's not detecting it again, any advice ? Already tried everything, followed steps from the PDF guide

oluvsgadgets

Did you try another cable? It could be a driver problem. When I attached the speaker for the first time windows showed some pop up installing some driver. Did you get this as well? The system should definitely detect it as new device if you attached it like shown in the video: turned off with the Bluetooth button being pressed when plugging it in.

Michał

I'll try it tomorrow again, thanks

Brett Rawlings

Update went well using the link to the files provided. The firmware file name ends in 0.4.0 however on a Windows 11 PC once it successfully updates, the speaker says 0.4.1. So Windows and Apple OS must handle differently, or EarFun has changed the 0.4.0 firmware. I will look and see if Oluv posted his firmware separately on his own site. The firmware makes the speaker sound great so hoping it is just a weird reason it says 0.4.1 instead of 0.4.0.

Richard

I recommend everyone to download the Free App Wavelet on playstore. It enables some additional smart EQ tweaks and enabled me to really get the best out of the UBoom L.

Richard

Download Wavelet App, enable compatibility mode and tame those highs :)

Douwe de Vries

I have tried that app before the downside for me that it effects the entire frequency response where you sometimes just want to make specific tweaks in particular area's. So it is not really for me. I try and EQ not relying on that. If you are on a Samsung phone and want the flat sound like intended I recommend uninstalling SoundAlive. This really had a positive effect for me

Michał

To my understanding, It may only reduce gain so that there is less distortion when boosting bass. I've had no issues with wavelet whatsoever, worked flawlessly with various headphones, speakers

I can only update my speaker in Win10, the system also can't detect my speaker in Win11.

Maurice

Richard

that's the old firmware

Paul emery

Thanks for the advice Richard. I will update firmware and download wavelet

Richard

Download Wavelet

Richard

Download wavelet

i am on ios

HPD

Du meinst Stormbox Blast? Wenn ja würde es mich ebenfalls interessieren!

Defeng

interestingly, i just got my replacement unit (original left side broke) and it comes with 04.3 firmware version

HPD

Also insgesamt 3 verschiedene Einstellungen. So wären doch alle bedient.

Bin gespannt, ob man Unterschiede hört.
